1.
Technically everything after the 1st fret on the D-string is guitar territory, so why not do away with those two skinny strings too?
Well with modern metal guitarists playing 8 strings we could probably get away with less... Come to think of it, Animals As Leaders play in Drop E... No wonder they don't have a bass player!!!
2. You don't need more than 5 cause that's guitar territory
3.
Also bear in mind that sometimes you've got to go with a tone that doesn't sound great to your ears soloed but fits in with the mix.
Exellent advice. Some of the most famous songs with great bass tones sound pretty "bad" with the bass track isolated!
4.
Markbass isnt even "that" expensive, im sure people would still pay Markbass italian prices even if a little higher.
100% agree. I always compared markbass prices with other premium products which cost up to double the price. Anyone who knows me would tell you how much of a bargain they were. I'd happily have paid over 1k for one of their cabs. They've definitely lost that allure now.
5. When I had semi parametric mids on my old laney amp, I'd boost 320Hz and 1.3kHz and I'd always cut through
6.
The Darkglass B3K is worth a look, I managed to get a Jason Newsted Garage days re-revisited kinda sound out of it. With a bit more growl tho.
Jason has such a great tone. I like pairing drive pedals with a Sansamp to get a metal tone that suits me
7.
Anyone else got any other good lightweight suggestions?
For cabinets, Barefaced are amazing. As far as amps go I don't have any first hand experience with other lightweight brands, but you can get used MB heads at very reasonable prices. Personally I'm waiting for the right head to come along so I can get rid of my F1, the new Peavey MiniMega 1000w that's been announced recently has really caught my attention!
8. I don't really like Yamaha basses, but in the right pair of hands they are amazing sounding pieces of kit, especially for the price. Incredibly well made too!
9. None of these. I leave mine in the car for ages because I'm really lazy
10.
Would such a material produce a better cab than is possible today?
I'm sure if that was the case Alex Claber would have done it already
11.
This is wrong. MDF probably has a slight damping advantage, but decent ply is stiffer.
My old Markbass 104HF was poplar ply. It was solid as a rock, but did sound a bit boomy. Maybe that's why they changed to MDF?
12. I jumped on the bandwagon recently. Got it next day delivery and the quality is incredible. Thickest speaker cable I've ever seen too! I don't think I'll be having problems with this
13. Sorry guys! I know the guy's a hero but best to close it early to avoid letting our displays of love get out of hand
14.
Are they saying that all MB gear will be made in Indonesia now ( and then tested in Italy)?
They say it proud, "Re-tested in Italy!" That will make me laugh til the day I die I think somewhere along the line Marco said that SOME producst will be made in Indonesia... Which probably means eventually they all will.
15. The weight increase would have to be due to the use of MDF instead of poplar ply.
16. here's the official Facebook page with the discussion https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359467951/10152216516982952/?notif_t=group_comment
17. I love Prosteels but they don't last me long either. If you like the tone you should like the steel Elixirs. Mine only came off after a year cause I broke one!
18.
Are they neo?
He didn't say specifically, I can only assume that when he says 'same specification' that they'd still be neodymium drivers. Then again, if they weren't the cabs would certainly be even heavier!
19. They've also got a YouTube channel where they review gear and generally have a bit of fun with it.
20. I've also heard that MDF produces a better tone. I'd wager that MDF is heavier than ply though, and probably less durable. Maybe that's why they're heavier now, and nothing to do with production being moved to Indonesia?
21.
Havent had chance to try one yet but all this certainly looks good for Ashdown's ABM NEO line, UK built, Marine Ply and Italian Sica NEO drivers.... Well priced for the specs too and light. Looks like Ashdown are now out Markbassing Markbass lol ;-)
Wonder if they'll start outsourcing to Italy
22.
I'm not a real bassist, because I go higher than the 5th fret
You should tell the guitarist he's not real every time he plays an open string, or has his "Bass" knob on anything but nought
23. I just smiled and said thankyou, they seemed to mean it as a compliment!
24. I've bought from Andertons before a couple of times. Always been impressed with their quick delivery and accurate responses to queries either over the phone or by email. Friendly service helps too!
25. Marco has just revealed that they no longer use B&C drivers. He said that they're custom Markbass speakers that he designed personally, to the same specification.
