I was in my late teens / early twenties when the disco thing took off, and working in a record store. It was nearly always women who bought the stuff, with a lot of men being afraid of harming their 'rock' credentials to admit to liking / buying disco music. Makes me laugh (now it's considered okay to like disco) how those same blokes often make out they were really into it back in the day, when all they listened to was lousy prog rock / early metal etc. And funnily enough they were the ones then who usually did n't have girlfriends - go figure!

Your amp will run a single 4 ohm cab or two 8 ohm cabs, but connecting two 4 ohms cabs (as you predict) will bring the load down to 2 ohms which your amp won't be happy with.

Agree with most of the above. However, if you keep an eye on local press/Gumtree/Ebay etc you can maybe pick up a perfectly usable Peavey/Yamaha top box style mixer amplifier that will have 6/8 channels and maybe pump out 400 to 600watts a side for less than £200 if you're lucky. Combined with a s/h pair of say Peavey HiSys 2 speakers, you should get a working system for circa £400. Add a s/h powered monitor for around £80 and some leads it will all add up to only a shade over £500. Plus, if/when you want to upgrade you should n't lose that much on your outlay. Big Deal on Eastgate in Leeds sometimes have good bits of PA kit.

Keys players I've worked with in recent times have used - Roland KC range combos - good sound/features, bit heavy? Peavey KB series - okay, still heavy lift with the bigger ones though. Yamaha EMX powered mixer - great/loud/and light! (still need speakers though) Mackie SRM450 - great powered speaker, although still need small mixer to run. I reckon the Yamaha option with a couple of small PA cabs would be a good bet. Was n't Alex at Barefaced looking into making some?

Just a quick heads up for anyone interested - Rod Stewart is featured in 2 programmes on BBC1 on Tuesday July 9th starting at 10.35pm. First one is part of Alan Yentob's 'Imagine' series looking back at Rod's career. This is then followed at midnight by an OGWT concert from 1976 at London's Olympia. Hope there is some Faces / Ronnie Lane stuff featured.

Just watched this - absolutely amazing!! Thought the bass sounded fine too(even on my ordinary LG flat screen TV). Bit of overplaying here and there but WTF? - this was ENTERTAINING, remember what that's all about? Great songs played brilliantly by a superb band, with a great brass section who actually joined in on some of the moves too!! If I had to criticise Niles' guitar was a bit low in the mix to begin with, but that got sorted after a couple of tunes. Thought the overall sound was excellent, best live performance on TV I've seen for ages.

Astra diesel estate - had a few now and they've all been reliable. Massive load capacity for a medium sized car, flat load area (major requirement for me !), cheap to run / tax / insure, and drive well too. Does n't attract attention from plod or thieves, and spares readily available everywhere for not silly prices.

Also worth mentioning that usually the most desirable guitars in the vintage market are the lightest! Fenders tend to increase in price as they decrease in weight! Friend of mine has an early 50's Esquire that is really light, and probably the best guitar I've ever played. Ironic too as growing up in the 70's people used to boast about how heavy their Les Pauls and Strats were as if some sign of 'quality', yet these would be derided in later years as poor instruments. Remember playing some Fender guitars and basses from this period which were pretty lousy, and they were often the heaviest ones too! (Even more amusing for these now to be seen as desirable in the current vintage market !!)

In the last year I've had to (reluctantly)use my Stingray less, even though its not overly heavy. Have started using a Precision Lyte as my main bass, made so much difference to me especially doing maybe 3 or 4 long gigs on the trot. Also loving my Dano Longhorn for the same reason. Play this every week in my local pub residency and never come home with aching shoulder at all. Should maybe qualify this with the fact I'm 55 - never was a problem for me up through my 40's, and then only after an accident which badly broke my arm. Got a couple of Stingrays, and am thinking of selling one soon as don't honestly think it will ever get played in anger again. (Have to keep one though, just in case of miracle cure for old age etc!!)

Last night at my regular pub gig I used an old Carlsbro 200 watt 1x15 Pro Series cab, (with an old Hartke 3500 head)and it sounded great! Could n't believe how such badly thought of stuff could be so good really - usually use my GK1001RB with a BF Compact, and was amazed how close it was possible to get 'my tone' from a 'budget' setup. Love cheap gear that sounds good, and there's a lot of it about!

And if you're really stuck for dosh, you could do a lot worse than the Behringer BD121 for a Sansamp kind of Ampegness.

Only saw them once, at the Stafford Bingley Hall in 1977 on the Hotel California tour. They were truly awesome, especially 'new boy' Joe Walsh who also did 'Rocky Mountain Way'.Great band. Don Felder's book 'Heaven & Hell' is quite an entertaining read giving his version of what went on.

I've been using D'Addario EXL170S nickel sets on my Danelectro basses for years now with no problems. They are gauges 45-65-85-100 which may seem a tad heavy but they work well with a good bright-ish tone, and the tension is ideal. Suitable for up to 32" scale instruments, so should be okay for you?

I missed out on a copper Jerry Jones Longhorn a couple of years ago, should have got it as they have quite a good reputation as having a better build quality than Danos? Now out of business I believe too. Cheers for the bendy bridge tip - my RI seems okay at the moment, but will keep an eye on it. My other one has the upgraded bridge which although much improved does n't have the ..err...'charm' of the original design!
