Fuzz/distortion/overdrive that's out of this world
ahpook replied to Lobster fingers's topic in Effects
I don't have their fuzz, but have a Wounded Paw Black Sheep, which I can vouch for, as it is a superb pedal, just much lower gain than you are looking for I think. The guy at WOunded Paw has good ears though, so I'd trust any of his pedals.
wow - i thought i was the only wounded paw fan ! they make fantastic pedals and have great after-sales service...even all the way from canada. i've got the battering ram (overdrive/fuzz) and it's brilliant, but the fuzz isn't super-splatty a la woolly mammoth style. the attack goat is meant to be pretty mad though. -
i just spat crisps all over my laptop. it's like cookie monster hitting the 'epic' button over and over again

just found this orphaned manual in a folder of papers - not sure if i sold the pedal here or not...my memory's obviously going ! good condition, free to BCers
A rockbass fretless s/h is always a good bet as Warwick fretless basses (including rockbass) all have ebony fingerboards.
plus the one - i have a fretless rockbass fortress and i really like it.

Do strings vibrate at the same pitch underwater?
ahpook replied to EssentialTension's topic in Accessories and Misc
As a physicist I would resort to the time honoured method... suck it and see. With experimental evidence of the real situation we can see which effects dominate. . Ahpook - how very, very hand-wavingly were you? A drop of 0.0001 Hz seems low from intuition - which can be very wrong. You are bang on about the potential complexity with possible transition from laminar to turbulent flow, We could also see cavitation as well. An interesting problem, good for final year degree project or a more qualitative A level investigation I guess.
well, i tried to follow the changes to the equations i posted if i plugged the changes in properties of the water ~1000 times denser and ~1000 times more viscous. it struck me as very small - water isn't air ! but then most of the sources i saw said the contribution to the forces on the string from the viscous damping were low. you're right - if the flow was to get very messy i'd imagine it would get very complex. -
Do strings vibrate at the same pitch underwater?
ahpook replied to EssentialTension's topic in Accessories and Misc
Surely pitch is down to the frequency/speed the string vibrates & the string under water, damped by it's surrounding 'heavier than air' will be slower - lower frequency therefore a lower pitch.
i've done a bit of research and the increased damping does change lower frequency of the string in a predictable way (Sir George Stokes did the legwork for us), but it's a very small contribution - the shift in frequency between a string in a vacuum and in air is of the order of 10e-11 Hz. from the equations*, very, very hand-wavingly it looks like the damping due to the greater density/viscosity of the water would be of the order of 10e9 larger than in air, so a drop of 10e-4 Hz might just be an answer. an order of magnitude estimate, shall we say i may be totally wrong though - i just fancied playing with some equations for a bit *page 21 -
Do strings vibrate at the same pitch underwater?
ahpook replied to EssentialTension's topic in Accessories and Misc
the string will vibrate at the frequency if you ignore any effects of the damping of the water. the note you hear will be higher as the speed of sound is different in water as compared to air, like saturation divers in a helium-rich atmosphere i'd pass on trying a real-world answer talking into account the damping...the motion of the string is likely to be incredibly complex...i see reynolds numbers, non-linear flow and 3D vector calculus heaving into view. -
Which of the 5 in the list do you recommend? lol Si
just dredging up an old joke from my harmony central bass forum days

How do you know if a bassist is 'good' or not?
ahpook replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
But the question is framed around personal subjective quality assessment.
then it's not much of a question imho - it's like asking which is better ? nescafe or kandinsky. so i'll leave you to it. -

How do you know if a bassist is 'good' or not?
ahpook replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
So, when you hear a bassist and decide whether you like their playing and composition, and decide they're 'good', how do you make that decision?
because i like what they're playing. all judgements on 'good' music or musicians are personal ones and attempting evaluate them in objective terms are a waste of time. -
looking at basschat over the last couple of days.... a strop

i'm not that bothered....i've been making unpopular music for decades. should be quids-in !

band names... the hardest mission ever
ahpook replied to RockfordStone's topic in General Discussion
my only advice on choosing band names is never choose anything with any doubt over how it's spelled, as you'll soon get sick of spelling it to people. -
you're gonna need a preamp with that.
Funny old thing, language. I was reading this thread with a persistent interpretation as in 'This bread tastes flipping terrible...'. It still reads rather strangely to me, all this talk of 'flipping basses'. No, no; it's only me. Just saying, that's all.
you think that's bad....i'm still looking for the trigger all these folks keep pulling on basses, amps and so on...i'm certain none of my basses have one, and believe me, i've looked.
-
Ahpook, The Flipster looks cool, would be interested to hear one.
there's a couple of samples here from the same basic circuit.

i use an MXR micro-amp pumping a bit more signal into my valve preamp and it works a treat. i'd stay away from compressors to boost a signal, especially into a valve preamp as you're going to get some compression there anyway.

Will There Ever Be Another Great Innovator?
ahpook replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
I'm sorry to have to say this but the people who claim there is no innovation in modern music are usually too lazy to take the time to follow the crumbs and investigate music properly.
plus the one. i can think of one guitarist who, imho, pretty much invented a new way of playing their instrument (in the last 15 years or so...) and no...i'm not going to make it that easy for you -
if you go down the route of a pedal aping the portaflex preamp, you could try an 'albert flipster' from diy stompbox. i got one recently and it's a great little preamp - i can't vouch for how true it is to a portaflex, but you can get some very motownesque sounds from it, with very nice wooly comprerssion. cheaper than a VT edit: there's some more info on the circuit here
....as there's no real hand signal to pump it up
i think there is, but it might be misconstrued !
Has anyone ever accurately weighed a new bass when they bought it to test out the notion that the cell structure of the wood loses moisture over the years.
look, it's just winter....it's be sunny soon and we can all get out a bit and stretch our legs. it'll do us the power of good.
