1. i don't know about the midtown, but the jack casady, suffers from atrocious neck dive. if it didn't sound so damn good i'd have sold it ages ago !
2. you're gonna need a preamp with that
3. Bought a Westone bass body from Alan which he'd also routed to my spec for a pickup I had. Fantatsic routing job and an absolute pleasure to deal with. Couldn't be happier - many thanks.
4. i'd change the valves, then see if it sounds any better before trying anything else. as long as you can work methodically changing valves is fairly straightforward, but as you're a neophyte with amps, i'd leave any other investigation to a techie.
5.
I don't think you'd damage anything by trying it. Either it'll work OK or it won't.
absolutely ! suck it and see....as it were
6.
Thanks for that, a very interesting read. Unfortunately, I can't find any info on the output of the preamp of the Glockenklang :-( The head has a 1/4" Preamp Out socket as well as a balanced DI with level control. I'm thinking it should be OK
It's quite tough to get concrete figures for the outputs for musical gear sometimes ! I have two Ampeg preamps and even their output levels are different, so even the manufacturers seem confused.
7. there's an interesting article on input/output levels and pre- & power amps at ovnilab
8. Yes... and there's always a but... BUT...what are you going to be driving it with ? The input sensitivity of the amp is 1.4V - you'd have to ensure that whatever you plugged into the power amp can deliver that for full whack.
9.
My Skyline Decade, after surgery...
ooooh, lovely ! i bet it sounds insanely good. it's something i've wondered about doing on mine. do you have any problems with the pickup earthing if you touch the pickup surrounds ?
10.
I've been using Cleartune for a while now, it's very good!
plus the one. i thought is was free, but apparently it's not.
11. Very interesting. Thanks for posting the response graphs.
12.
Monday - Experiment with dropping tuning down a whole step, play for a while, adjust to a half step down, eventually decide it was ok in standard tuning. Tuesday - Spend most of the evening making minor adjustments to string height, pickup height, make sure all scratch plate screws are tight. Wednesday - Alternate between my two basses trying to decide which one is best and if you can actually hear the difference between maple and rosewood fingerboard. Thursday - I like to spend thursdays sharing a bottle of wine with Miss Manzie, occasionally interrupting the TV by asking her for an opinion on what strap height looks coolest and if she likes the white or the sunburst precision. Friday - Time to knuckle down and practice! I find the best way to practice is play the wrong notes over Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' for two hours. Saturday - Unfortunately the depression brought on by Friday's terrible practice session has resulted in a conviction to sell both basses and the rig. Spend time researching prices on the internet. Sunday - Realisation! It's not my playing that's the problem, it's because I don't have the right bass! Spend all evening looking at Basschat classifieds and listening to clips of Stingrays on YouTube. Monday - Hmmm. Maybe I don't need a Stingray. Let's try dropping the tuning down a whole step...
:D amnd girlfren say it's the same for her and bikes !
13. sounds a brilliant - i'm very interested how you get on. i've fancied building a rack unit with a preamp/speaker sim in for a while. i never liked the sansamp either, got an ebs microamp and have used that great effect live for DIing fuzzy and overdriven basses.
14.
My G&L SB1 suffered weak E string and dead and live notes on G string. Part of the problem was strings with single core over bridge (have forgotten what they are). Regular strings helped, but final cure was good setup by good luthier. Bass is sorted now
good news
15.
Just remembered who recommended the shim in that position; Buzz Feiten. Hope it works!
any idea what thickness of shim he recommended ?
16. deffo worth a try ! i'll give it a bash and let you know thanks
17. i got pedal-geeked at the gig last night http://instagram.com/p/XNtg1jNGq8/
18. here's some sound samples... 1st 4 notes are on the G,D,A and E strings and then the 1st and 2nd of the Gmaj scale are played on the E-string. can you hear the thud and lack of sustain compared with the other 4 strings ? no bite ?
19. well, to come back to this thread, i've been playing the sabre a bit over the last few days after it being in the case for a month or two and... the E sounds like washing line again, but the rest of the strings are zing city. i'm starting to lose hope...i dunno, a new nut maybe ?
20. one cheap way to get out of phase problems with the LS-2 is to put a pedal in the loop that does invert the phase. i've used a ehx lpb-1 in the past. very slight bass suckage tho.
21.
Nice set! Can you tell a noob like me what models they are? Sabre, Jack Casady?, unknown, something Jazzy?, something Jazzy? I also see a Korg 700S there. Does it still work? Well built those things were. best, bert
left to right they are... you're right about the sabre and the jack casady, then there's a status shark, my trusty japanese fender jazz and finally a status t-bass. and yes, the korg still works fine - could do with a good clean, but still going strong.
22. don't see anything boring here....
23.
Dozens of threads on this woman every year, on all the bass forums, with all the participants making more or less the same comments every time and everyone doing their best to point out the bleeding obvious.
plus the one.
