Saw 'em on their last tour and the bassist was using a Rick 4001 (or perhaps a 4003, couldn't really make it out from where I was standing. Good taste son!

LOVE the 4005 that Liam plays in that video, and the sound on the record is one of my favourite recorded bass sounds to date (although I'm not 100% sure that it was definitely a Rick they used, could stretch to 95% though!)

How do they compare to other coated strings, ie Elixirs (if you can comment?) I've been using Elixirs now for just under a year pretty much exclusively, but would certainly be interested to know if the EBs are in any way comparable in terms of quality/tone.

You might want to consider installing an active preamp to give you more treble before the signal hits the amplifier, something like a J-Retro? As for pickups, I think the EMGs should be fine for the tone you're after, but maybe look at the likes of Bartolini too to widen your options. Hope this helps Danny

In Northern Ireland we have a host of great small timers - two that immediately spring to mind as being influential too me are Aidan McGuigan and Sumi Kal. Both incredibly understated in their playing, with an appreciation of groove and holding down the low end as opposed to technical wizardry. Top notch IMO!

Townshend does have that lackadaisical playing style these days though - seems to alternate between on and off-beat when it suits him, same with his vocals. Doesn't make it sound like it does on the record but I think they're past the point of trying to prove themselves as rockstars and are just enjoying themselves well into their 60s. Fair play to them! Pino = incredible, did any of you catch his bass playing after Roger's scream in Won't Get Fooled Again? Superb, melodic, totally different from what JE would have played but still fitted perfectly with what Zak was doing. Of course, they'll never be a direct replacement for John and Keith, but they do a damn good job!

I've always had a soft spot for the Ashbory basses - they're supposed to sound cracking too despite being so small. Another one to add to the list?

I actually really like the look of those Bootsy models, but the price does seem a bit ridiculous. I'd be very surprised if they sold more than 50 worldwide.

I actually have a lead which says the same, is yours made by Planet Waves too? I never really pay attention to which end goes where, but I *think* the shielded end is for your guitar, and the other for the amp. Could be (and am probably) wrong though

I generally try to keep mine around 50-60% on the meter - if it's constantly going into the red, it's probably not good for the preamp, unless of course it has a valve in it which you want to drive. Your bass must have a super high output BTW?

Great interview, I've recently been in touch with him via email, seems like a really nice genuine fellow. Tip - don't get him started on EUB's! Very touching when he talks about John Martyn. Hopefully going to see him play on 4th Feb, can't wait!
