1. I can only imagine that the 4b is more expensive to make. It has 4 recesses on top into which the feet of a stacked cab fit (the C4 doesn't). The 4b is physically larger and substantially deeper, thus you would imagine it'd produce deeper lows. I've run upto 4 x 4b's with DB and never found it lacking in lows. In fact I've had more issues with taming the low end (especially at medium to high volume), and end up cutting the lows from about 80Hz to 100Hz typically. Had I not already bought the 4b's (before the C4 was ever released) I would've opted for the C4 instead.
2. My vote goes to Phil Jones. I'd consider something like a PB100 powered cab. As it has a line input, you could put any kind of preamp in front to get the colour you want. You could add further PB100's if you needed more power. Personally, I wouldn't bother with a PA cab, as most single cabs don't have the low frequency extension and don't sound as good as a Phil Jones with a low B. Also, who needs tweeters for bass, unless you want to introduce some hiss
3. Used to have a 78 in the 80's, great bass and fairly lightweight too. You can get good or bad basses from any vintage - Caveat Emptor

5. There are several options. If you need to use the Mac, you will need some kind of device to convert the analogue hi-Z output of your bass to a digital signal. There are in-line type devices, desktop audio interfaces, rack mount interfaces etc. The other option is to use a dedicated bass preamp / headphone unit, such as a PJB BigHead or Zoom unit, which could also be used standalone. It will also depend whether you want to noodle along to a backing track or not, and on your budget.
6. Or get yourself a multitrack recorder. You can always transfer the files to a computer afterwards.
7. A preamp or a DI out from your amp/combo before the audio interface will give you a better tone (and more tone shaping options). You don't necessarily need a 'better' interface.
8. Thank you to all involved for a great 'bash'. Had a fantastic time and met some lovely people. Cheers, Wil
9. Somewhat of a mystery it seems. If the luthier didn't spot anything either it'll be trial and error to diagnose whether there's anything wrong, or it's simply down to the different G strings themselves. You may have to settle for a compromise for now and find a G string that works 'best' for both slap and pizz but may not necessary excel in either. The soundpost needs to be in the correct position to get the most out of the bass, and it's worth experimenting to find the 'best' position. If you trust the luthier (and can afford it), then get a new soundpost fitted, as this could make the difference. Good luck with your quest.
10. I preferred the first one (although it could be down to my cans). Marginally more clarity in the midrange - perhaps because it has gone through less 'processing' to get to the final result.
11. The late Bob Brozman used an sm57. If you need to use a mic, a dynamic is a better bet. Either a Shure sm57 or a Beyerdynamic m201, as they're more resistant to feedback. The alternative is to fit a Fishman resonator pickup system.
12. The next step would be to check the setup. Are the slots in the nut and bridge all similar (compared with the other strings)? Is the string seating properly? If you get a different response with different G strings, it could be down to how the string sits in the slots. If it sounds thin and nasal, it suggests the energy is not being transferred through the bridge to the body. Is there anything else attached to the G string or bridge that could affect tone?
13. There are too many variables at play to give a constructive answer. May I ask if this happens unamplified or amplified? Have you listened back to a recording of it for another perspective or are you assessing the sound when playing?
14. Was a given a set of 45-105 NYXL's by Andy at the Midlands Bash. These strings are superb and an improvement on my current set of stainless round wounds of similar value. I'll certainly be sticking with the D'Addarios. Highly recommended.
15. Andy was at the Midlands Bash yesterday and kindly gave me as set of 45-105 NYXL's. I've swapped these with my current stainless steel round wounds. Wow, the NYXL's are so much better! Highly recommended.
16. Great meeting everyone. Thanks for the superb organisation, impressive strings by D'Addario, and the sublime cake. To bassbiscuits - glad you enjoyed the black jazz bass. Wil
17. Looks like I might be joining in the fun See you all later. Wil
18. Have only tried Rotos as an alternative to the Hotwires dbe, albeit on a 4 and they're very decent. Not sure about your budget, but the La Bella 5 string set for 40 quid at Stringbusters could be a good choice.
19. I'm running a similar setup, but with a Focusrite Forte instead. I'm presuming your input and output devices are set as the Focusrite in Garageband preferences. To hear the bass in Garageband, you'll need to add it as a new track. That 'should' be all. Hope this helps.
20. Thanks for sharing. This is only my view, and should be read in a positive light (I'm middle aged and slightly grumpy, thus feel free to ignore me) The keys and drums could've been a bit more 'up front'. The guitar is perhaps a bit grungy / bottom heavy, competing with the bass low down. Prefer more 'punch' in the kick. Perhaps slightly 'over-compressed' for my taste. Most importantly, that Wal tone should've been brought out more - some lovely lines in there Loved the musicianship and feel. Keep up the good work.
21. My bass amp (Acoustic Image) has reverb - better go and check it works
22. Someone who plays a 60 year old design because it has a F****r decal on it
23. I found that gigging was stopping me enjoying music. I quit last November and have enjoyed music more as a result. I now have more space to be creative, allowing me to write and record stuff.
24. Looking good. Will follow this with interest, as I've got a black Allparts body and maple bound neck waiting to be joined together.
