My thoughts: Was very surprised at the lack of Fender in the programme. Already thought Bernard Edwards was a genius but seeing the clips of him playing blew me away. Likewise Paul McCartney, seems he chose the most difficult songs on bass to sing over. Given that one of the major playing styles of the bass is slap I’m surprised there wasn’t at least a bit of RHCP/Flea in it.

Imo on a big stage, in the mix, they’re the daddy, simply cannot be best. But in a rehearsal room, or played solo I find them a bit meh. And carrying a flightcased SVT head and 810 is something I never want to have to assist with again.

Blimey, I’d never be able to sell a bass again if I put up a clip of me playing it, the racket I make.

It looks a bit sorry for itself but I’ve seen these go for between £300 & £500. At £70 has to be worth a punt.

In our old punk covers band we often got asked to play Kings of Leon. Singer just used to tell whoever asked to eff off. He’s one of those cheeky types that can somehow manage to do that and the other person still likes him. Takes talent, that.

I doubt I’ll be able to make it, we’re releasing our 4th album in Aug, so pretty much every Aug/Sep weekend will be gigging to promote it.

I think if I were looking at 2 basses to have maximum flexibility it would be a five string Precision and a five string HH Stingray. Precision, well that covers that sound, and the flexibility of a dual humbucker Stingray pretty much covers most others. Nearly went for a Jazz in my choice but think the Ray edges it.

You can learn to stretch further, the difference in spread from tip of thumb to tip of little finger in my fretting hand compared to my other hand is about an inch and a half, possibly two inches. But that’s taken place over years of playing and practicing using my little finger to fret notes, it’s nit happened overnight.

Tech21 Para Driver V2 - has sweepable adjustable mids, so you can get a much more aggressive JJ type sound. It’s what I use and my tone is somewhere between JJ, Lemmy and Duff McKagan. They’re a bit over £200 but buying from overseas, even with shipping and import duty should be cheaper than what they retail for here. It’s the one but of kit that is essential to my sound, wouldn’t be without it.

Def worth it, if I had any sense I’d sell off my estate of US Precisions and just play the Vintage Tony Butler V4s, feel virtually the same to play, and at a fifth of the price. Seriously good basses, not just for the money either.

That is cool bananas, presumably this means Vintage basses, which imo are real hidden gems in the bass world.

That’s always a good move, trying gear that you’ve heard others use and really liked. When I wanted the traditional Precision sound I did similar and went with a Markbass amp, the LMT that you mention. For a vintage warm Precision sound Markbass pretty much nail it for me.

Nice one, we did the same a few years back at the punk weekend they do there. It’s a great stage, event is really well run.

I think in the 70s and 80s the bass became not only more audible in the mix but it started to develop as an instrument that could come to the fore in a way that it previously hadn’t. Or maybe it had, but we just couldn’t hear it as well, but The Jam, The Stranglers, Japan, plus many others had the bass doing a far less traditional role, with the benefit of a much better presence in the mix. I’d say it depends on how high the lip to the hatchback is, 66lbs lifted over a high lip, may be awkward. Also whether or not the cab will fit in that space at all. Certainly on my last Astra hatchback a Barefaced Super12 was the largest cab that would fit. A regular square shaped cab had no chance, and again that was down to the height of the lip. Imo though it’s def doable to move about by one person, I shift my Ashdown ABM410 on my own and that’s 10lbs heavier - and for reference I’m in my 50s. Stick some castors on it, nice and easy.

I just couldn`t deal with that, OCD Rules & Regs, chapter 5, paragraph 12 state mahoosive overhang on amps/cabs shall not be permitted.

That’s a very interesting pedal methinks. Not a particular Rush/GL fan but I do like his tone. I just wonder how much we’ll get stuffed for it.
