1. No prizes for guessing what gets my vote!
2. Live at Leeds for me too-or any of Frank Zappa's You can't do that on stage anymore albums.
3. Cor, that's seen some service! JJ was never one for babying his basses. Beautiful handmade instrument, I believe, I wouldn't say no to it if it was given to me but I wouldn't bid on it A. as it's not my favourite period for their music, and B. I haven't got a pot to piss in. Not going to the convention for the same reason, although I'd've liked to-I understand they're going to play 'Black and White' in its entireity.
4. Nice'n'Sleazy. Or Seven Nation Army, or on acoustic bass, the Time is Now by Moloko
5. It's been for sale at Andy Baxter's for several months, obviously with no takers, and it's now found its way on to Ebay. Yes, he's playing the Bass Centre Blockhead these days. Incidentally, here's a pic of me with Wilko Johnson's guitar!
6. To be fair, only at home whilst practising. Never on stage, although I have seen it happen to others. Knowing my luck though, if I stop taking a spare bass to gigs, I will break one straight away. I was once fortunate enough to be privy to a conversation between JJ Burnel and Jason, the chief exec of Rotosound. He said if he didn't change his strings after every gig, he guaranteed he would break the bottom E.
7. Likewise, lovely thing to own. With the bag that's a fair price, good luck with it.
8. I've had my GB Shuttle 6 for 2 or 3 years now, and feel no urge to change it. Does everything I need, is plenty loud enough for anywhere I'm likely to play, and fits in a laptop bag. With my 2 Ashdown neo 1 X 12's, I can carry my whole rig in one go if I need to. Only thing I want is a spare, for which i wouldn't mind a Markbass of some sort.
9. Much as I love my Shuker JJ Burnel, a bass I never thought I would be able to own, if I wasn't gigging I couldn't see me being able to justify keeping it. As it is, every time money gets a bit tight I start feeling guilty about owning well over a grand's worth of bass and what I could do with the cash if I sold it. Whilst we're gigging I can get away with it, but I couldn't have that much money tied up just to sit in a case in the cupboard. I'd be more likely to keep my Mex Precision, but eventually that would probably go too. Only one I probably wouldn't sell is my Westone Concord I, my first bass, mainly 'cos it isn't worth enough!
10.
I've always liked the look of Warwicks. Apart from this one. Just... why? Is there even a reason?
See, I hate all Warwicks with a passion-except the Dolphin. Funny old World, innit?
11. I saw them in Falmouth on Friday, cracking night as always. This time Norm was using an Ashdown ABM with a 2X10 cab. It's definitely his Bass Collection sig he's using these days.
12. I used to have a real hankering for one of these back in the 80's, but it looks awfully dated now.
13.
What make was Normans bass?I know he's been playing it for years, but it's not a Fender.I could listen to (and watch) him all night.
I believe it' s his own sig model from the Bass Collection (??) or some such. I was interested to note he was using GK stuff and not Trace. Looking forward to seeing him in Falmouth next Friday.
14. Chris Thompson (Screaming Blue Messiahs) Stu Morrow (New Model Army) Greg Norton (Husker Du) Craig Adams (Sisters of mercy) Mike MIlls (REM)
15. This is ours-me!
16. I've had mine for my ABM Neo 1X12's for a few years now-still delighted with them, loads of life left in them yet. They did take a while to arrive, but this was some time ago-I will definitely use them again.
17. Our guitarist recently went to Manson's. He's been looking to change his whole setup-guitar (he's just got a Les Paul), amp (trade his US Fender Strat and Fender tweed combo for an orange head and cab), and get an electro acoustic. Manson's just didn't want to know-offered him derisory trade-in figures on his Strat and amp, which would have given them ridiculous profit margins, and he got the general impression of 'We're Manson's, we can do what we like'. He went round to Project Music and came away with a good deal on a Blackstar head and cab, and a Fender acoustic, with a hard case thrown in. I've been to Manson's many times, and although they have a decent selection of stuff, I don't recall anyone ever asking me if I wanted any help, however long I've spent in there. Pretty hefty prices to boot.
18. I thought you were looking for an amp tech who crackles!
19. I had a 1 X 15 Trace SMC combo which I was very happy with. No complaints with the sound, even got compliments on my tone. Didn't find it that heavy either, although I don't miss it now, having bought the Shuttle. Each to his own, I guess.,
20. I just got some Alpine Musicsafe Classics, as I found I had whistling ears after a gig with my old Doc's ProPlugs. Very comfortable, with shorter stalks than the ER20's, which means you look less like a TellyTubby when you have them in. Mine have gold and silver interchangeable filters. Not tried the silvers yet, but the gold ones are great for the motorbike and for sleeping after a night shift! Will be trying them out in rehearsal today.
21. Had a fretless, didn't keep it long-couldn't get interested in it really. Recently bought a Washburn AB10 which is a beautiful thing and which I love the sound of, unamplified anyway. Bought as another experiment, as we have started doing some acoustic stuff. Too early to tell whether it will be of any use yet, although it's so nice I may keep it anyway, at least until I need funds for something I want more.
22. A Budgie tribute? Christ you've got your work cut out. Can't believe the bass lines Burke Shelley sings over. My tone was once compared to his, which I was very pleased about.
23. Hi Mate, welcome from slightly East of you!
24. According to Jon Shuker, that one is a 60's P that Hugh Cornwell sold to him when the Stranglers first started. According to Jon, that one was light and had a fantastic neck but lacked a bit in the sound, and his black 70's P had a great sound but weighed a ton, so his Shuker sig bass is an attempt to combine the best of both. I recall reading somewhere that the green colour was a respray job, and I think it may have originally been Oly white. Many threads have discussed his sound and how it was achieved (legend has it that he had an 8X10 cab with torn speakers which gave that characteristic growl), and at that time he was using valve amps (Marshall, Hiwatt). These days it's the Shuker JJ bass with Ashdown amps and cabs (he has his own signature amp with them too). Many say he's never recaptured that Rattus sound, (personally I prefer the Black and White era with the black P and (?) Hiwatt amps) but I don't think he's sounding too bad these days.
