1. This always stuck in my mind for some reason As does this
2. I picked us up a short notice gig a while ago in a pub in a small town near me. Drummer was very unenthusiastic as his ex lives there, and its a pub which doesn't have a lot of amplified bands. Didn't look good as we arrived to a pub empty except for a few regulars, got worse when we started loading in and heard comments like 'what do you need that many speakers for?', the landlady was quite nervous about the volume, and we were crammed into a small corner by the bar. Turned out to be a cracking gig, we found that keeping the volume down worked really well, place filled up and the reaction was outstanding-does one a great deal of good when you play something you've written and you hear 'that was f***ing brilliant!' from the audience. Plus we got booked again-they even rang us to book us for another one.
3. Some of the Japanese P's at Guitar Emporium (No longer with us but here's their website) have 'slimmer' necks too. http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?...guitars&a=2
4. I've just finished reading 'Shakey' as well-thoroughly enjoyed it, although it appears that like a lot of great artists, or, I suppose, like most of us, Neil Young can be a bit of a git. I'm also on a heavy run of rock biographies, before that it was Nick Mason's 'Inside out', which is a scream, recent ones also include Stephen Davis's 'Jim Morrison', Mark Putterford's 'Phil Lynott:The Rocker', and my favorite, Mick Wall's Zep bio, 'When giants walked the Earth'. I've been eyeing up the Warren Zevon book lately, now I think I'll give it a go. Several Johnny Cash and Dylan ones around-anyone read any?

Never knew Si, but sorry to hear this all the same. RIP and all the best to his family.
6. The man's a legend-one of my favourite bass players. I also agree I prefer his work with Wilko, which is where I first encountered him-and several times since, although I have yet to meet him, a thing would very much like to do.
7.
Yay for small stacks. Shuttle 6.0, two Nemesis 1x15s, total rig weight just over 70lbs. The only thing stopping me from carrying the whole lot in one go is the lack of a third arm
Same again-Shuttle 6.0 and two 'Ashdown' Neo 1 X 12's. Put the Shuttle in a laptop bag and carrying the whole rig at once is a practical proposition! One cab for rehearsals, both for gigs. I'm stuffed if I'm carrying any more combos up and down stairs and the like.
8. Fender Aerodyne Jazz. Uncomfortable, not a much of a sound, crap electrics. Don't like the Jazz body shape either. No more Jazzes.
9. I went through a period of trying every kind of string I could get my hands on in search of something that kept its initial zing longer than one gig. Had little success with most, including DR High Beams, which didn't seem like anything special to me. Eventually settled on D'Addario nickel XL's, which I've been using for quite a while now. Also tried the D'Addario stainless ones, didn't seem to offer much improvement, so I'm back on the nickels. The only others I liked were called Skull strings, but I've struggled to find any more.
10. Happy with what I've got-I think I'd ask for some talent too.
11. This is identical to my first ever bass, bought new in about 1983. Still got it, it's my TV bass, picked up for plinking away whilst watching the box. Would never sell it.
12. Now on Ebay. Note price now £80.
13. I haven't done anything to it-it was all done when I bought it. The gaps appear to have been filled with a dark filler, but they're quite narrow and it's hard to tell-it's possible that they've not been filled with anything other than the epoxy that's been used to seal the fretboard-as I said, it ain't pretty, but it works.
14. Another experiment has come to an end. I bought this to see if I got on with fretless. I don't, so time to move it on. Ibanez SRX 355-5-string, ash body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard. PFR active humbucker pickups, 2-band EQ, Accu-cast bridge. It's had a bit of a hard life-it's been defretted and the fingerboard sealed with some sort of epoxy-TBH none of this done terribly well, but it works. Various dings, none too horrendous, and the previous owner has scratched his nickname in the body varnish. Needs a new set of control knobs-one has been glued in place-I haven't tried very hard to remove it, but I'm sure it's do-able. Taking all this into account it sounds massive-absolutely nothing wrong with its playability and the big buckers give a really thunderous sound, with a decent usable B-string, not like a rubber band as with other 5's I've tried. If I was keeping it I would have considered getting the whole thing refinished and probably the neck refretted, which would result in a stunning bass, but I already have enough fretted basses so it might as well go to someone else to do as they wish with. Ideal for what I used it for, a cheap way to try out fretless, with the additional benefit of being 5-string. Alternatively it's a proper serious bit of kit, with a huge sound, which could be made into something quite special. Looking for [s]£100[/s] £80 plus postage.
15.
Depends on the guitar and it depends on the bass. There are aesthetically pleasing and fugly examples in both. I was going to say that in the Telecaster guitars definitely had the worst looking instrument, but then I remembered that G&L had made a bass in a similar shape (Asshat?) which wins by being not only ugly but badly proportioned and impractical too! Actually one of the things that puts me off a lot of basses is the over-large Fender style head. It's like they took the basic Strat design and scaled it up to fit those horrible chunky bass machine heads without really thinking about how it looked - yuck! Most modern designs have managed this much more elegantly.
See, there you go, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. My favourite bit of the Fender bass design is the big headstock, and to me anything that doesn't have it looks unbalanced-one of the reasons I will never own a headless bass. The Telecaster also happens to be my favourite of guitar designs, although I do love the big semi-acoustic styles like the Gretschs. To me the Fender Precision has never been bettered in terms of design (aesthetically at least), and there are very few modern basses that I would give house room.
16. Every gig, although we don't currently gig that often so in practice only once every couple of months. But if we're busy, more regularly. Soon as they start to lose the zing, they're off. I'm currently on D'Addario XL chromes, which seem to last longer than most, and I've tried all sorts. On non-gigging basses, less frequently.
17.
Ah the original owner, such a lovely bass if I could afford to keep her I would. The set up is fantastic I just have too many basses and need money to pay off buying too many toys
Know the feeling. If I can be of any other assistance let me know. Good luck with it, it deserves a good home.
18.
Well the serial number puts the bass at 06/07 and I am afraid I do not have the original pickups.
I believe this was my bass-the original pickup failed, hence the Quarter Pounder. Also it had the useless S-1 system which I also had replaced at the same time. The only reason I sold it was because I was presented with the unmissable opportunity to get my Shuker JJ. Nothing else would have induced me to sell it, it's a beauty.
19.
Does anyone know why they fell out with Eavis and were only just allowed back?
It has something to do with CND, which Glastonbury was heavily involved in, or vice versa, in the 70's-I believe JJ reckoned CND was funded by the Russians, and I've seen interviews where he claims to have been proved right-I don't know how true that is. As to how they got in-it has been said that as the Stranglers and the Wurzels share the same management, and the Wurzels are having something of a renaissance at the moment, Eavis wanted the Wurzels but was told he could only have them if he had the Stranglers too. Again not sure how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me..
20.
Great pic, my Cornish M.I.B. friend.
Thank you dear Boy, it is, isn't it? Can't remember where I half inched it from, but it illustrates the Burnel rig very nicely.
21.
On a slightly different topic, I have been fully converted to The Stranglers! What a thunderous live bass sound - I think I spotted JJ using four (!) Ashdown 410 or 412 cabs!
Good man! Actually, two 4X10's and two 1X18's I believe. Woolly? I think not! I saw them the night before in Frome at a 'Glastonbury warm-up' gig. Bloody good night as always. Sadly, their Glastonbury appearance (first one ever, due to falling out with Michael Eavis in the 70's) was totally neglected by the BBC.
22. +1 for a Shuker-not necessarily a JJ, but a Shuker Precision.
23. Sarah just bought an Ibanez from me. Entirely smooth, life-affirming transaction. A pleasure.
24. Having the volume turned down on my bass is a favourite of mine! Or the mute switch on on the Shuttle. I once stepped backwards halfway through a gig and trod on my bypass tuner, thus immediately muting my sound! Now I've found the tuner out on the GB, I use that these days.
