1. I am astounded that this is still here!
2. Don't expect too much from yourself-you'll be nervous and you will cock up, be ready for it, don't let it throw you, and realise that things will get better the more gigs you do. It's true that most people willl not notice-I have come offstage disgusted with myself at mistakes I've made, and everyone was completely oblivious. Opinions differ on the alcohol front-as you can see. I personally don't touch a drop before playing, some prefer a drink to relax them. I've done both, and having had a drink I thought I played better-but I didn't like the idea that I might only have thought I played better because of the drink, and was actually crap! Whatever you do don't overdo it. As everyone else has said-have fun!
3. Seen this one? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=78114&hl=
4. In purely practical terms, I have found it far easier to see the position dots on a darkened stage on a maple board than a rosewood one.
5. Can't understand why it hasn't been snapped up.
6.
I used to know a lovely maid from S'nozzle.
Aah, a rare creature indeed.
7.
Now I don't want to get all pedantic but across the border here in D'bun I would need to correct you Boy would be bu'y, whereby one pronounces all 3 letters especially the y as in yu. cheers moi ' andsome. Tut tut moi is French surely. Over here it would be cheers me 'andzome. Your appalling grammar aside 'us be plaized to zee 'ee' Did I see you post that you are studying in Plymouth? Uni per chance? Does the Student Union still look like a blinged version of Macdonalds?
Dunnee listen to 'ee. 'Ee's from over the bleddy bridge, be buggered.
8. The bassist with a band we were suporting last year (Al from Larry Miller's band) was kind enough to offer me a go on his Fodera Monarch, which I thought was very good of him, but if it's another bass player I think you should be OK (unless his is a battered, mojo'd wreck, in which case think twice).
9. Welcome from S'nozzle, boy.
10. When I was short of a screw for an Aerodyne Jazz I had once, I emailed Fender UK and the rep sent me some for nothing.
11. Welcome from t'other side of the Bridge.
12. My '07 US P had a Quarter Pounder in it, my Mex P has a Thumper. I noticed a considerable difference in volume between the two, the QP being waaay louder. My cloth ears couldn't tell much difference in the tone.
13. Way back in the mists of time, mine was a Peavey Century 100watt head, which I was told never to get rid of (but I did) and a pair of Marshall 2X12s. When I got back into playing a few years ago, it was an Ashdown Mag 300 4X10, which didn't quite cut it, and was replaced by my Trace 7215 1X15, which did.
14. I had an SR500, not my cup of tea (neck too slim, replaced by a P) but a damn fine bass. Go for it, you know you want to.
15. I also do my level best to keep my basses in as good a condition as possible, but try as I might they still accumulate dings and scratches, and I'm blowed if I know where they come from. I always give my bass a good wipe and polish after every gig, and try to look after it, but when I'm gigging I don't seem to be able to avoid the knocks. I am also of the opinion that a bass is a tool to do a job, and if it accumulates a bit of honest wear, so be it. I couldn't go out and gig with my MIM Precision and leave my Shuker JJ at home for fear of damaging it-it was made to be played, and I like to get out there and do just that. What I wouldn't do is what my main man JJ used to do in the 70's, play it whilst wearing a leather bike jacket, covered in zips and metal buckles, which must have played merry hell with the finish (must have been bloody hot onstage, too).
16. I had a go on one of those once, it was very nice indeed-sadly I'm talking about the amp and not the bottom, which I happen to think is a splendid example.....
17. Nothing I can add to what's been said-terrible thing to happen. Sympathy to all concerned.
18. The only bass-related item I still have a hankering for is a fretless-purely out of curiousity, I may well find, much as I did with 5-string, that I don't get on with it, and immediately flog it on again. I therefore don't want to blow big money on it. Our local shop has an unlined fretless, bit knocked about but OK, by Ventura. I'm not familiar with the brand, anyone have any experience with them? They only want £85, I'm tempted just for an experiment.
19. I'm going to see this on the 2nd! New film about Dr.Feelgood, with a live gig by Wilko Johnson! Sounds like a bloody good night out to me. http://alternative.artsalliancemedia.com/oilcity/cinemas#UK
20.
As soon as I got a load of The Stranglers' debut LP "Rattus Norvegicus", that was it - I wanted to be Jean Jacques Burnel.
Yeah, same here. Unfortunately, 30 years later, I'm still not him.
21. I'm also more than happy with what I've got-the only thing I still fancy is an all-black Rick-but that's just curiousity really, if I ever got one (most unlikely!) I could end up selling it after a week. Same goes for a black/black/maple 70's Precision.
22. If it was a rough-sounding bunch from Cornwall, could be us...
23. Try these fellers:- http://www.endlessknobbing.com/
24. Nothing wrong with Gotoh bridges-I fitted a 201 on my Mex Precision, nice, solid bridge with channels for the saddles for stability. Jon Shuker fits Gotohs on some basses, I have one on my JJ Burnel, but that one is a different design with channels on the outer saddles only. I believe the 201 is probably the better bridge.
