Can't think of a bass I want-except a Shuker JJ Burnel, which isn't happening. I'm beginning to think that I'm not going to be happy until I've got a head and cab instead of my combo. Current front runner is an Ashdown ABM 500 with some sort of 4X10, but that could change tomorrow. Haven't got a pot to piss in, so where it's coming from I have no idea. Who knows?
Well, having reviewed this 10 months later, it turns out I got both a Shuker JJ and replaced the combo with a Genz Benz Shuttle and ABM cabs. Neither of which I believed was possible when I first posted in this thread-so take heart, ye GAS afflicted souls! Anything is possible!

I did a very similar thing with my '07 S-1, except I had a SD Quarter Pounder put in. My MIM P has a Thumper in it, and I have to say the SD was always noticeably louder. The Thumper isn't quiet enough to be a problem, it just needs the amp turned up a bit higher than the SD did, but it was certainly not as loud as I was expecting.

The air in here is pretty thin, I think I'll go outside. -

But the money's no good... -
I'm the frontman, so I have no choice when I'm singing-I generally fix on something at the back of the room, and sing to that, with occasional glances at the fretboard to make sure I'm in the right place. On instrumental sections I look up as much as possible, looking at the fretboard for more complicated bits.

What's the 'bass of the moment' for you?

I am cured of all GAS-I have a Shuker JJ Burnel -
I had a Jubilee 300 head and matching 4x10 cab, it sucked but I would love to try a VBA 400.
I played through one at Sawmills a few weeks ago-whilst the drummer was setting up, the engineer left me alone for an hour with the VBA, through what I think was an Ampeg 8X10. I had a grin a mile wide! Lovely thing, but wouldn't want the weight.

I have a certain fondness for this era of the Stranglers' career, some gloriously daft, not-taking-themselves-too-seriously videos around this time, like 'Duchess', this one, and my favourite, 'Nuclear device'. Can't get on with the idea of JJ playing a bass with an over/under headstock-besides, I think WALs are ugly as sin, look like the body's been done by a DIY merchant to me. He plays a natural finish Precision in the 'Who wants the World' vid.

I'm getting all my strings from these boys in future, right here on Basschat:- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry632856 Good service, good strings, cheap!

I was actually only after one new bass, but then this happened...

Long live the Precision! Some fabulous bits of kit on here-Mark, your two are cracking, especially that '76 black/maple, which is just gorgeous. How is it for weight? -
Ah, thanks for that-got 'em all on vinyl, but have relied on downloads in recent years.

First mention of the scriptures and I'd've been gone like a rat up a drainpipe. However they don't mention which scriptures, so you could have some fun there-I'm sure the Jedi religion has scriptures of some sort?

I saw a black/black/maple 70's fretless P in Manson's in Exeter a couple of years ago. Looked fabulous, but they wanted big money for it.
what's a point to be nice to a guy who made a mistake, and then calls all the world, by starting this topic and making complaint to Fender, how bad is company behavior.
Because he is a customer, whom they supposedly want to come back, and to tell his friends to come too. The business with the fit is understandable I guess, different Fenders need different scratchplates, especially when one's made in Japan and another the US. The fact that it's warped is not forgiveable, and neither is the glue nonsense-it shouldn't be like that, and to say you can't send it back because you've taken the film off, when you could only find out about it by removing the film, is not on IMHO, and at least some concession should be made. OK, Nigel shouldn't have tried to fix it, but it doesn't alter the fact that they could come out of this looking a darn sight better than they do, by allowing a bit of leeway. I for one will not be doing business with these guys in the future, and after seeing this thread, I doubt I'm alone. That's a fair bit of potential business gone West over the price of a scratchplate. The ones you go back to are the ones who will go a bit further to see the customer is satisfied, even if they're somewhat in the wrong, rather than simply saying 'you tried to repair it, you're not returning it'.

This is why I started playing bass.......
The reason I started to play the bass, end of.
Same here. And I'm not interested in any Precision that isn't black. This is my fave of their vids, the bass solo at the beginning is one of my favourite warm-ups! -
Played a brand new Fender 2009 P Bass tonight...
Deep Thought replied to StevieD_FenderP2009's topic in Bass Guitars
I loved my '07. I was somewhat unimpressed when the pickup packed up after 12 months, but it was the useless S-1 system, which sooner or later I'd have got rid of anyway. Once I got an SD QP in there it was great. Loved the neck, and I always really liked the enclosed gear tuners with the F logo on them-never had any tuning problems at all. Would put it away after a gig and come back a week later, and it was still in tune. It had a slight paint flaw on the body, but nothing obvious, otherwise the finish and build quailty were fine. It appears that Fender are somewhat hit and miss with both their US and Mex basses, you just have to be sure you get a good one. I still find it hard to get excited about other manufacturers' basses-except my Shuker, but that's an entirely different animal! -
Bought Mikes beloved Black Maple Fender P, he was brilliant and very fast and informative. I can't recommend highly enough! When I am next holidaying in Cornwall we must do some serious liver damage with some local brew!
Many thanks Steve-you're on!

Aah, Luckett, mining country. I used to be stationed at Launceston, and was always down that way. Spent a lot of time in Stoke Climsland in my youth, and have friends in Harrowbarrow and Rezare.

Steve bought my Precision from me-entirely pleasant and hassle-free transaction. Excellent comms, fast payment, a pleasure to deal with.

Well, here's a thing I never expected to say-my Shuker JJ Burnel just arrived! Bass number 006. Through a chance conversation on another, non-bass related forum a few weeks ago, I happened upon this, and circumstances conspired very favourably to allow me to nab it! I've been itching to say something for days, but held back until I actually had it in my hands! The process of getting it has actually been quite agonising, at one point I thought I'd missed out, but it was meant to be! Never gigged, virtually pristine. Note headstock decal which says J.J. Burnel in normal script (like JJ 's) as opposed to the signature decal they have nowadays. Sadly pre Shuker cases, although came in a prefectly serviceable Gator case. Also pre signed certificate-I might try and wangle one out of Jon! Was expecting, from what I'd heard, for the neck to be like the deck of an aircraft carrier, but in fact it's no wider IMHO than my Precision-just a bit fatter and rounder in profile. Plays beautifully, although it's got lighter gauge strings on at the moment which will be coming off pronto. Sounds incredible through the Shuttle! Intrigued by the phenolic scratchplate, not so shiny, and I would imagine less easy to mark than the Fender plastic ones. One of the first things I noticed was the light weight as well. Tone control is a totally different animal to the Precision's-actually makes a considerable difference. Generally the bass reeks of handbuilt quality, and I'm delighted with it. I also never expected to be saying that I packed my beloved US Precision off in the post on Friday (to Bassatnight-hope it gets there soon!) to recoup some of the price of the Shuker-I'm sure it's gone to a good home! Can't wait to get the Shuker to a full-blast rehearsal-first gig will be on the 30th! Anyway here are few hastily-grabbed pics.

I ususally find the odd backward somersault whilst playing helps. Plus have a supply of bats handy to bite the heads off. Works for me!

Amplifier Covers Online dotcom - Seriously impressed

I have their covers for my Ashdown 1x12s. Very pleased with them, although I have to say they took a while to arrive. -
Now that's cool! Ever read Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" or seen the excellent film version? Fantastic!
Many times. Great stuff.

I have a Rotosound poster from JJ Burnel, which he signed for me last year in Exeter, a copy of the Stranglers' biography 'No Mercy' signed by all the band, and a copy of JJ's 'Euroman cometh' also signed by all four. Totally unconnected, I bought a book about the sound barrier in a second hand bookshop a few years ago, only later did I find it had been signed by Chuck Yeager (the bloke who broke it).
