Speeak for yourself. I'm confident I can't play Teen Town now, not that I've ever tried. I'll have to dig it out and have a listen or perhaps I won't bother. More importantly, it really is quite ridiculous the way people keep alotting their own experience to everybody else. I've never had any interest in AC/DC and I couldn't recognise their latest riff if you paid me. So, who were Pastorius's influences there? Jerry Jemmott? James Jamerson? Who else?
I struggle to play Teen Town properly but it has entered the common vocab. AC/DC is just indicative of the musical environment... no slight intended but bass was particularly apirational save for a few players. Good point about Jamerson and JJ - pioneering 16ths - I guess Jaco just did it faster, a little higher in the mix and with more mid-punch...

There's a phenomena of human achievement which is that it takes much, much more effort to break a boundary than copy it. We can all play 'Teen Town' now, but it took some real talent to write and play it when most other people were struggling with the latest ACDC riff. In fact, most people didn't conceive or think in terms of entirely 16th note bass lines at the time.

Missed it too.... gutted. Can't believe I was just sat at home... We need some sort of alert thread going when some Uber-bassist is doing the rounds. Caught Matt Garrison in Manchester too with Gary Husband in a similar stealth gig... me and 5 other lucky people! FYI... advance notice - Holdsworth is there November 5th
And the response is "Eh....whatever." Amazing. Jaco's best, if not some of THE best bass playing anyone has ever recorded.
Really!? - I always thought it was a waste of Jaco. And I find ADM's compositions a bit rambling. Each to his own - I'll stick with the Metheny/Mitchell/Zawinul/solo versions of Jaco which are the best IMHO.

The pick-up covers are worn but the sound is clear and burpy. Perhaps I'll just get her cleaned and properly set-up then decide. Just wondered if there was any particular synergy with a Warwick and Barts that made it a good option. What I'm hearing is that the difference will be minimal and I'm just gassing... It's a lovely bass that sadly I don't play much on account of the Spitfire hogging the limelight.

It's one of the old ones with a 2-band... Not sure if it has a pre-amp? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rYM2-SyJz-A/UdkygnvnTSI/AAAAAAAAABI/zz6TAJJbwic/h120/Streamer.JPG I felt the need to change as it needs a bit of clean-up and I always like the sound of Bart-equipped basses.
Leuk dat je enthousiast bent over mijn favoriete bas, Geert! Ze schoppen kont! Warwick used thick necks a lot in the early 2000's, my '95 pro1 5str. Also has one. Early Dolphins and the current ones have thinner neck profiles though. Switching the twinjazz to its alternate mode makes even the slap tone growly and quite frankly gives the thumb bass a run for its money. These basses are brilliant! ... But also rare. I'm happy to own one and have owned several before. Kept the one I like best... This photo will give ppl an idea of its body size, rather smallish.
Gorgeous collection - all tones covered

I think it's a bit pointy... so slightly '80s. He's done the same design with loads of companies which I can't remember - Peavey? Purple looks quite nice... Gassing for the Carvin Allan Holdsworth guitar too. Go for it!

Cloudburst, Basses apart, consider the increased whump required from your rig if going '5-live'. You need some serious low-end to do it justice... It's quite an investment overall for just 5 extra notes, both in terms of gear and playing. That said, the new position options with a good 'B' are good fun... Good luck. Visog

Hi, Thinking of changing the pick-ups in an old Warwick Streamer bass, bought from Warwickhunt. I was considering replacing the original EMGs with new Barts in the same PJ config. Perhaps adding a pre-amp? What do we think? Good or bad move? Will it trash the value? Will it have minimal effect? Thoughts and opinions please. Visog
Thanks, that's really interesting. I've seen him a few times and have never noticed this at all.
He's quoted as saying that he has to chug a few beers before the start of a show... -
Allan Holdsworth UK tour with Jimmy Haslip on bass
Saw him with UK in '78, classy stuff, still play the vynyl now
Love all the UK stuff but the first record with AH is a classic! -
Short UK tour in November. Jimmy H on bass with drum phenom Virgil Donati. He's Australian but don't let that put you off. Should be a hoot. He's always had good value bass players - I've seen him with Jimmy Johnson and Skuli Sverrisson. Oh and Mark King in his rather curious short Level 42 tenure. Well the BW hasn't bought one. He's stuck with his regular 'flat' bass arsenal so that probably tells you a lot - especially as he's suffered from tendinitis as he said in this video. BTW I was sad when the BW when back to BP and stopped these video reviews. What's the point in reading a bass review???

Is a defretted bass , as good as a fretless ?
visog replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Are you serious? Jaco 'wrote the book' on a de-fretted bass. Alembic claim that the tone is better on a fretless without fretlines but Jaco's tone was sublime at his best. So as long as the work is carried out correctly, it's every bit as good. Of course the debate rages about fret lines... but that's more to do with the player than the bass. -

Great line. Not so sure about the 'question mark' bass. -

For the Fusion fans out there, Chic's latest project Vigil is released today. Gobs of great bass from Hadrien Feraud and I'm only up to track 3. Good so far, sort of an extension of his more latin-sounding late Electric Band work, i.e. Paint the World and To the Stars. ** Update on further listening ** Hadrien continues to shine with loads of great fretless work. Overall I'm now getting a looser early RTF vibe, particularly with the reeds and with the Guitarist Charles Altura not being full on but very subtle - in a good way.

The 25 best basslines of all time - MusicRadar

This looks definitive. I can't imagine anyone arguing with this. Glad that's sorted. -
I'm sure like everyone else, the "favourite albums" for bass changes from week to week. So, for now, here's some of my current favourites: Rush - Exit Stage Left
Incredibly exciting... best Rush period... Wonder if Bernie G does double-necks?
I wonder who will take up the challenge next?
Dunno but I think if they combine Bootsy's Star bass with Guy's sliding P/ups and Hansford Rowe's just intonation finger-board, they're on to a winner.
