1.
Remember that Manring uses a Carbon Fibre necked Zon bass - I don't know how successful it would be on a wooden necked bass.
As far as I recall the chap who had the Elrick with four detuners found it OK, but it was some time ago. I certainly think adding a string or two is a better and easier way to go!
I seen a bridge for guitars the other day that let you have 3 up to 3 tunings per string. Same idea as the hipshot tuners just the other end. Maybe be worth seeing if something similar available for bass. I think it was on the hipshot site but not 100% sure.
That would be the Hipshot Trilogy. edit- found some info on the Elrick I was talking about: link and thread on TB about it. Note the bloated looking headstock...
2. Its theoretically possible (see Michael Manring as the most obvious example) but most basses don't have enough room on the headstock to fit four. You would need to buy a custom. I've seen a pic online of an Elrick with that configuration and the headstock was pretty oversized. You can only have two tunings per detuner, there's no middle position as it were.
3.
It certainly appears to be smaller than a Stingray/Sterling as they seem to be using the smaller style Schaller machine heads. They also seem to have got the string pull on the headstock squint AGAIN.
Maybe its smaller to offset the effect of the neck-dive inducing upper horn?
4. Manoeuvrability. I don't have a signature tone per se but I like to think I do have a signature way of playing. Tone is easily shaped and enhanced if required but if the notes aren't there it won't work.
5. No- I try and avoid getting sentimentally attached to inanimate objects. I like them for what they allow me to do but there's no deeper connection, any more than I have a particularly spiritual connection to my kettle or my laptop.
6. Toss up between the Lakland Joe Osborne 5 (or whatever its called now) and a Sadowsky vintage style 5.
7. Looks fantastic! Does it have a stand or a spike or something similar?
8. Good stuff man! Liking the twin guitar work.
9. From eBay: "The positive Feedback percentage is calculated based on the total number of positive and negative Feedback ratings for transactions that ended in the last 12 months, excluding repeat Feedback from the same member for purchases done within the same calendar week." So they could have bought 26 items five years ago and not bought anything since: because there's no feedback in the last 12 months their feedback score is 0%.
10. Is this feasible as a one hand lift? Could you take it on the tube easily?
11. Glad its going well- there's nothing like being thrown in at the deep end to make you get your proverbial sh*t together!
12.
Quick edit for afterthought:- Stop telling everyone how great your Gear is, and how wonderful you are. It might be, and you might be, but it comes across as pretty arrogant reading. "Good Gear and loads of experience" sounds so much better. Just my two pennorth about the Geordie mindset.
Put more politely than I could
13. I started on double bass, then bass guitar and now play a bit of guitar also, albeit very poorly. I quite like the hybrid instruments- I like having the high notes on my ERB, and if I buy another guitar it will certainly be at least a 7 string, and more likely 8.
14. These are indeed brilliant basses- wish I could afford a second to defret. Yours has a nicer top than the one I have too!
15.
Answer: It's a high-mass headstock to reduce deadspots.
Aha! Every day really is a school day.
16. I clicked. Now I'm off for a cold shower.
17. Why is your headstock design so ugly?
18. Common knowledge. That's why they don't get any actual music to play
19. Elixir strings- at least five of them. Bonus points for a super stable neck.
20. Depends on the band, but I quite like doing the "sideman" thing. Less creative input means less overall responsibility IME. I can just turn up and play and not worry about the other stuff that goes with being in a band- its "their" band, so they can deal with irate promoters etc.
21. As long as you don't try and go too loud it'll be fine. All my 15" cab does these days is serve a a table for the rest of my hifi to sit on.
22. I see he now has a column in BGM as well.
23. I quite fancy a 5 string Jazz type, but with piezos only and a lovely top.
