Different sounds from different gauges?
velvetkevorkian replied to TGEvans's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've gone from using heavy guage strings to as light as I can with my preferred brand (Elixirs). I didn't notice any loss of bottom end but playing up the dusty end sounded noticeably sweeter to me. YMMV. -
Don't do it if you're truly frightened by the prospect. That'll just make things worse rather than be an improvement. If you can get the job done by playing by ear, stick with that. I personally think that if you gel well with the other band members, that's what makes it all work - then you can rely on intuition, feel and instinctive timing. Being able to read can also be a curse. I was once in a band with someone who could only learn by sight reading first, and was terrified of 'going off the beaten track' from whatever the music said. Horses for courses I guess
That happens because that person never learned to play by ear, not because they learned to read. The two are not mutually exclusive- learning to read is not going to make you a worse "ear" player.

Probably better to go for a catch all title like "Transcriptions" or something similar. You might be better putting a post in the site issues forum- the admins may actually see it there.
Again, I am all about the high C. I play mostly classical, chord based bass and it suits perfectly. I have often wondered what the next step up would be like, ie maybe tune A D G C F for super high pitch playing. Is there such a string that could do this.
I use a guitar string to get to the E below that- I think it would handle the extra semitone.

Good buy- I have a fretted and a fretless just like that but red and orange respectively. Excellent value. Will need to get some pics I guess... What electronics are you putting in? I actually really like the passive controls- rolling off the bridge tone with everything else maxed out gives me my ideal fretless sound.

Hi folks, I bought this from our own Ou7shined recently (original thread with his pics here) but thanks to a slightly ambiguous bit of manual writing from Boss it turns out I really need a momentary footswitch for my VF-1. This works perfectly and is still in mint condition- hasn't left the house since I've owned it and has only been stomped a couple of times by myself. Chunky metal construction with a 1/4" TRS jack attached. Looking to get back what I paid which is £15 delivered, or you're welcome to collect from Glasgow G51. You can check out my feedback here. Bank transfer preferred for payment but open to negotiation. Open to trades as well, especially for a similar non-latching footswitch (especially a Boss FS-6)- feel free to try me with anything else though. Any questions, fire away. Cheers, Kyle
Which way are your fingers hitting the stings? if you are pushing them down into the bass rather than across the face of it, that will do it.
I would guess this is the issue. Try and use as little force as possible, and see if you can get your fingers moving parallel to the top of the bass, rather than down towards it.

That's what I suspected- thanks! Back to the classifieds with this one I guess.

Recently I bought an Ashdown dual latching footswitch from Ou7shined on here to use with my Boss VF-1 for switching patches. Now, it's plugged in and it works, but there's a bit of a quirk- it takes two presses of the switch before the unit registers the change. This is a bit of a PITA for quick and accurate changes, obviously. Has anyone encountered an issue like this before? Is it likely to be down to the fact that its latching, as opposed to momentary? The VF-1 manual suggests that either would work, although of course it suggests using the Boss ones only. Should I just suck it up and get the Boss dual footswitch? Cheers, Kyle

The week before I went for my first school orchestra course (about 10 days of playing 8 hours a day) I sliced the tip of the middle finger on my right hand. Just had to use the other ones more to compensate!

All the biceps on show here are making me feel very inadequate.

As would I; what we need, though, is someone willing to take on the responsibility of organising it.

I doubt they would know or care as long as the payments keep coming through! -
Bridge pickup only on fretless side? No thanks. Not everyone wants to be Jaco when the play fretless.
i've seen this advertised myself quite like the idea are there any restrictions on who can apply for example if your in full time employment? i've not read all the details but thats usually a big stumbling block when applying for charity based things
England and Wales only, at least it was last time I checked. -
It really depends on the line you're playing IMO- I would try and stick with 1 finger/fret as far as possible but sometimes its just not possible to do so, in which case I see no problem with doing as you're suggesting.
As OBBM says, won't work. Check out the Micromon from Behringer, or some alternative headphone amp + monitoring equivalents from ART. These act as small headphone amps, that also allow you to pass your bass signal through to an amp, and also to mix in an external signal (e.g. aux, mp3, monitor signal, etc). I've got a similar system integrated in my SFX Preamp (www.sfxsound.co.uk). After using in-ear, I won't go back to monitoring bass from the amp alone. Unless I am leading a band (or other situations where I need to be able to speak/give directions and hear people speak whilst playing at the same time) then I will always run IEM. I am totally convinced by this technology, and it can be achieved for next to nothing nowadays (my first attempt was with a cheap Behringer 4 channel mixer and my best pair of headphones that I had kicking about - sound sucked but I'd never heard myself more clearly!).
Just to clarify, would you continue to use this even if the rest of the band were using conventional monitoring (so it would be bass only though the IEMs and the rest of the band through the monitors as normal)?
-
n/a- I try and avoid anchoring as it tends to introduce tension to the hand IME. Floating thumb all the way for me.

I can't stand it personally, but YMMV!
