1. I think it was Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid'.
2. A MIM Fender Jazz 5 string I bought from a friend. The action was always unplayably high as the truss rod was unadjustable. Also, all the pickguard and one (!) of the pickup covers had been painted a kind of metallic purple- kind of matched the finish but looked a bit sh*t. In retrospect, it could probably have been saved but IIRC I donated the bits to charity.
3. Speaker cabs...?
4. I thought about the DIY route, but I don't think it's one I want to pursue at this point. I have enough other stuff going on right now (trying to make progress on ongoing house repairs, mainly) that I would rather just pay the price and get it done. If I did it myself it would most likely end up bodged together somewhere along the line, like the bicycle I tried to repair that has sat half repaired for about two years
5. I can view the page but when I try and watch the video I get a message telling me "Due to privacy settings, not everyone can see this video. Log in to Facebook if you have permission". I appear to be able to view the pics though.
6. Hi folks, The bridge on my 5 string upright is warping somewhat (and I also cut one of the slots a bit too low) so I'm looking to get a new bridge fitted. Just been in touch with my local shop (The Violin Shop in Glasgow) who quoted me £135 for a 'self fitting' bridge, £195 for a standard carved bridge and about £250 for a bridge with height adjusters. I've always been a mainly classical player but have started to do folky type gigs and would like to get more into jazz playing too. Also, I spent so long playing on borrowed instruments I've never really had a chance to decide how I like my action (or string height, if you're one the mad TB string height Nazis ), so I'm leaning towards spending the extra cash on the height adjusters. Are these prices reasonable, in your experience? And do you think the extra cash for the height adjusters is justified? Any advice appreciated Cheers Kyle
7. Is it Facebook only or will there be other means of accessing it for those of us yet to be assimilated by the collective?
8. You would have to ask one of the admins; I have no idea.
9. That's because the forum isn't there anymore.
10. Curious. The WT-300 manual doesn't mention them, but the WT-400 lists them as being a 12db pad with the gain knob pulled out and the compressor bypassed when the enhance knob is pulled out. I would guess it's the same on yours, but couldn't say for sure. Hope that helps. gah!- beaten to it!
11. I expect to have fun. Anything else is a bonus.
12.
I wonder if its actually in, or its a pre-order situation?
According to one of our friendly affiliates, the first shipment is expected in September.
13. How easy is it to switch, once you understand the basic arco mechanics? I've always played with a French bow (since that's what my teacher used) but sometimes wonder if a German bow would be useful.
14. Lovely! Definitely the right choice IMHO!
15. I'd love a 5 string Beast bass. Why yes, I am in a metal band, how did you guess?
16. I'll have mine as low as possible please
17. Across three strings I would play all the notes at the 7th fret with the same finger (probably the 3rd finger), in a kind of combination barre/rolling motion. If it was like this: |--------------------------------------- |------------------------7-------------- |---------------------7----7------------ |---------------5----------------------- I would play the 5th fret with my first and the 7th fret with my 3rd and 4th fingers on different strings.
18.
Agreed. You can get everything you need in Maplins and im sure it will be cheaper than buying a kit. A 6" ruler (and 18" if doing it the Lakland way) cost only a couple of £. A feeler gauge will be helpful if setting the basses up to the manufactures spec. Not sure how much they cost but they arent expensive. All the allen keys should have come with the basses anyway and a couple of screwdrivers are all that needed IME.
I set my basses up to my spec. I couldn't care less what the manufacturer recommends!
19. Honestly, for a basic set up I've never felt the need for anything more than a screwdriver and some allan keys, and I like my action very low. Try reading through some of the guides online (like the Willis or Jerzy Drozd ones), apply it to your bass(es). If you're happy, sorted. If not, you can buy additional tools and resources. It's not voodoo, but the only way to learn is to try it IMO. It's pretty difficult to do any permanent damage unless you're using totally excessive force.
20. If you raise the C string a bit does it behave the same way?
21. Leave it unfinished? I've seen a DB with what seemed to be a rosewood fingerboard before- looked quite striking!
22. Absolutely, and especially if it was a straight trade as the SR5 is significantly cheaper!
23. Here's a guide from Gary Willis.
24. The photos are the least of my problems with that ad- the typography, on the other hand, is almost unreadable.
25. Not interested in a 7 string guitar in part exchange by any chance? I would love this but simply don't have the funds at the moment
