As with most things, it depends on what your goals are. For the bands I play with (link in sig) technique is important because I need to play pretty fast and reasonably intricate lines quite a lot to be appropriate. It's just as much of a fallacy to assume that simple is always best as to assume that lots of notes is always best. More technique gives you more options; if you're happy with the options you have then it's not a problem.

Another +1 for Reaper here. I record using Reaper and the basic input/output sockets on my laptop (via an external mixer) which is fine for demos etc. -
I use light gauge Elixirs on all four of my basses (.040-.125, I think) including a mixed guitar/bass set on my 7 string. I like them because I don't have to worry about changing strings and the sound seems consistent for longer. Punchy without being clanky.

Low B String on a 1/4 scale bass

I don't know, but I can't imagine it being very useful- my low B on a ~43" scale (4/4) is not exactly a beacon of definition. Curious to see whether you come up with anything though. -
Sorry, you seem to have missed one out- there was no clip of the full 5x15 rig that was clearly visible there?

Heh, the dude from Mnemic is a beast. Re: frequencies below 30hz, you can (in theory) amplify them (see the [url="http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=105059"] thread about the Prodigy's PA for some more discussion[/url]) but you need lots of power and lots of speaker area, and in practice it tends to be all mushy if you try and make it all about the fundamentals. Most of the sound of the strings is made up of higher harmonics. To be honest, if I was playing with guitars tuned below B I would probably do as Meshuggah do and play the bass line in the same octave- trying to do the octave down thing just seems like a lot of hassle to me (although certainly possible if that's what you want).

Yes, I suspect the 'tone goals' of The Prodigy and your average bassist are probably a bit different- they probably do want that intestine rupturing, skull exploding bass rather than a clear articulate bass tone.

The Pod X3 series are "non-denominational" in that they cater to both guitarists and bassists (and vocalists, to a certain extent). I'm curious to get more details about the new units.

A new bridge with lovely height adjusters for my double bass. £250 including fitting. Seems like money well spent so far, and shouldn't need replacing for a good few years, and it does seem to have had a positive effect on the tone- the old one was made of balsa or something and was a bit too bendy.

As far as I can tell none of the tunes are original compositions so blaming our Jeff for the titles is probably a bit harsh too The cover is horrendous though. Glad you didn't hate it as much as you thought you would though. You'll be listening to Alain Caron before you know it

I would give the Violin Shop in Yorkhill a call- they usually carry a few "budget" Stentors etc., as well as being somewhere who do setups etc. You/your partner are welcome to have a shot of mine, although it's a bloody big 4/4 5 string so not really a good beginner instrument!

Not done that much amplified playing, but I've used a pickup going to FOH only with no onstage monitoring- all acoustic instruments and only hand drums, so not massive onstage volume. Never had a problem with feedback, but to be honest I've no idea what I sounded like out front.
