How was your open mic or jam night last night?
Rosie C replied to tauzero's topic in General Discussion
Our renaissance-folk-rock duo went to a local open-mic on Monday - the first we've done for a couple of years. We did a medieval tune on recorder and bongos, then a Blackmore's Night song with octave-mandolin accompaniment. It was well received. Of the other acts my highlights were an American over on holiday, a lady playing John Playford tunes on a melodeon type instrument, and a couple of younger singer-songwriter guitarists. -

Has the OP mentioned the genre - I noticed the comment about guitarists not being happy outside of their genre but that struck me as a bit odd for a pub covers band? Are all the covers some obscure nose flute death metal or something?
-
You let me know if you don’t like it 😉

Tricky situation Phil! I know of one band who are 'talented hobbyists' rather than semi-pros, with other sources of income, and who are happy to take home less each from gigs so that their dep bass player, who is a pro and lives off his performance income, can get a decent fee. They end up with an excellent bass player who is happy to commit and the rest of the band enjoy the gigs much more as a result Tangentially, I've heard of a band leader not personally taking any payment from gigs in order to be competitive on pricing, so the rest of the band got a decent fee per gig, and building up a roster of venues. The band then put up prices once they had got themselves established. I guess we've been fortunate in not needing to do either of the above, but there's a certain logic to the first and I do have admiration for the approach taken in the second! They may give you a sticking plaster solution till you find your permanent band member. Good luck!

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?

Yes.* No.* Channeling your inner, petulant teenager into the music of your chosen genre, is a good way to go, just not this way. Happens to us all, do something else and come back to it. *You know this of course. -

Congratulations!!! These are REALLY nice creations. I've tried one in both The Bass Gallery and Bass Direct and was very impressed 😊
-
Ahhhhh, Tom Crusing it? Good idea. Yeah, when there's a band baseline and normal (whatever that normal is) and then just one outlier it can be a problem. I think we've got it down with the posed ones It's the candid ones that cause issues
-
My mistake then. I think, at some point, they did drop the switch. Might have been when they "soft-rebooted" the Sterling line a few years back.

Yamaha Silent Bass SLB100 Probably the best Electric Upright Bass (EUB) ever made. Serial number 001288. Includes Open body with knee rest and a good bow. Owned from new for over 20 years. I bought this when playing with a Jazz band. Unfortunately the band only lasted a few months and I have had no opportunity to play it since. Therefore, it has been played publicly less than 10 times, so in very good condition, with just a couple of dings. Small damage on the left side next to where the body frame joins and and one on the frame itself and tiny ding further down the left side ( see pictures). There is also some ageing marks on the bottom of the metal back panel. The bottom ferrel marks the floor ( It always has ) The on off switch is a little temperamental through lack of use. There is no stand and there is no case. I kept it in a carpet lined Surf Board Bag (It is big) Now in original packaging box which is 185cm long, 43 cm deep and 33cm wide. After my stroke 11 years ago, I really couldn’t manage it and finally have to swallow my pride and let it go. It deserves a better home. Price is £2500 (The amount I want in order to buy a good acoustic bass.) But open to very good offers. (New price currently over £8000) Ideally to be collected from Plymouth Devon, But could be delivered within UK with buyer covering cost of transport and insurance. To get the best view, see a very short video I made last week go to

The other two members of my band are almost a foot taller than me. Even glam rock platform boots wouldn't get me up to a comparable height. The only band photo we have where our heads are all level is one where I am standing on a step and the other two have crouched down slightly...
