I've always made my own speaker cables. I use two core black rubber insulated power cable, IIRC 12 gauge. I've never had a problem with any of them. For storage I lust loop them end to end until I get three or four feet length and just then tie each of them in a knot. They then go into a milk crate with others of their ilk. In my mind concern about speaker cables is much ado about nothing!

The start price is fair but £2800 plus fees is insane. Badlands Guitars had one like this they couldn’t sell for months at £1500 (and that’s a shop). I sold mine for £1500 with a Hiscox case. Thought that was very fair.

Being Gig Fit (Like Match Fit in football)
Lozz196 replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
I’ve got to the point where I pretty much can’t carry stuff aside from my bass, and bending down to plug in cables etc is difficult. So my “stage moves” don’t require much, aside from trying to get out of the way of our lumbering clumsy singer. -
What are you listening to right now?

Pedaltrain Nano in top condition with (soft side) velcro attached. Harley Benton ISO-5 PSU velcro'd to the underside. Cracking little PSU - 5 outputs, two are switchable 9/12/18V, I've had it for a while and used it a lot, it's never missed a beat. Full spec and blurb here: https://www.thomann.co.uk/harley_benton_powerplant_iso_5_pro.htm Includes replacement myvolts power adapter/adaptor (which cost about £17 as I recall) as well as the original (euro plug with clunky adapter/adaptor - it'll do as a spare). The myvolts needs a polarity reverser, (which is also included), the original doesn't. Includes 5 pedal power leads and a reverse polarity lead for the LEDs. And TWO free velcro cable ties! The LEDs are remote controllable, different colours (to match your shoes), they can fade, they can flash in time to the music, they're utterly stupid, pointless and completely fantastic. Includes soft carrying case with decent sized front pocket and shoulder strap. This has never been used and is in mint condition. I'd rather sell these together, but I'll change my tune if they're still here in a week or two. £65 posted or £60 collected from Bewdley DY12 I go to Brum and Worcester a lot, happy to meet up or possibly deliver. Any questions (about the item) please ask.

Being Gig Fit (Like Match Fit in football)
bassbiscuits replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
I do regular stretching which I tailor to exercises before a gig. For me it’s rolling my shoulders back and forwards, turning and rolling my head and neck from side to side, stretching out my forearms, wrists and hands, and also less obvious ones like rotating my hips and lower back which can get stiff after a long time standing with a bass around my neck. I do these before a gig but also try to build them into daily life anyway. As someone who spends too much time at a desk on a computer I find helping stay supple is easier than trying to fix problems later. Edit: Also in terms of singing - warm ups on way to gig (usually involving singing along to something in the car on the way) and longer term just trying to sing something regularly so gigs don’t feel quite as exhausting. -
Hi all, selling my Dingwall Combustion 5 has never been gigged in mint condition, just used at home and for recording at home, as much as i love it circumstances have changed and unfortunately it needs to go to a good home, it will come with the padded gig bag, pau ferro fretboard, ideally would be collection or can meet halfway if sensible, any questions please feel free to ask The Combustion succeeds in providing the ultimate combination of tone, performance and value, making it perfect for both stage and studio work. Thanks to our hybrid manufacturing approach, each bass receives a final fret level and set up by our skilled team of artisans in Canada, which means you can enjoy the cutting-edge benefits of the Dingwall Custom Shop at a more affordable price. Select from a left or right-handed model, Maple or Pau Ferro, 4-, 5- or 6-strings, with or without a pickguard and choose from a range of available of finishes, including Natural Ash, 2-Tone Blackburst, Vintageburst, Indigoburst, Whalepoolburst, and Ultraviolet. BODY & NECK The body is swamp ash and modelled on our Custom Shop Afterburner. It’s compact and lightweight, making for a bass that’s comfortable to wear and beautifully balanced. The five-piece maple neck is securely attached via four bolts, and the fingerboard employs Ralph Novak’s fanned-fret system and a 34–37-inch scale spread (the scale length of the B-string is three inches longer than the G), with a 240mm fretboard radius, making it superfast over a full two octaves. “We’re happy to report that the Combustion is well deserving of the Dingwall reputation. It’s built to last, with plenty of bounce, vibrancy and great sustain, all you would want from a five-string bass. We can’t recommend it highly enough – this is why so many bassists are adopting these instruments into their bass arsenals. Buy with confidence!” BASS GUITAR MAGAZINE PICKUPS & ELECTRONICS The Combustion comes fitted with Dingwall FD3n pickups that are made to our exacting specifications using neodymium magnets, which offer both high output and a smooth, but aggressive tone. They’re wired to a 3-band preamp, along with a 4-position Quad-tone pickup selector, master volume and an active/passive toggle switch. “The Quad-Tone pickup selector gave me quick access to several distinct flavors. In passive mode, the soloed neck and bridge pickups were old-school and vintage, the bridge /middle pickup combo was fat and focused, and the bridge/neck sound was loud and growly. Changing right-hand position gave me lots of variations on those themes, but switching on the preamp brought each pickup to life and showed me several new colors.” BASS MAGAZINE HARDWARE The Dingwall bridge started with an available bridge/saddle system that met our requirements for solid performance and great tone. We then improved on it by designing a custom riser system to provide an increased range of flexibility when it comes to adjusting the action. The headstock is home to the lightest import tuners we could find. We collaborated with Hipshot to modify their Ultra-lite tuners, which resulted in a shorter tuning peg that allows a proper downward angle at the nut for maximum sustain and improved stability. Dingwall Strings Dingwall strings have been meticulously tested to maximize performance and deliver a tone that blends effortlessly with any style of music. We were the first company to design strings specifically for multi-scale instruments. Available in both nickel and stainless steel, our strings provide an even tension for optimal balance, letting you experience the warmest highs and the tightest lows possible. Note: basses are shipped with Dingwall Nickel Strings as standard. Hey peeps. Moving on my Melvin Lee Davis preamp,DI &ir loader with data cable to install software as well as power cable. I bought this to use as a silent practice setup. Never left the house, or gigged. It’s like new tbh. I’m including the data cable you need to install the software. Great sounding preamp. It has a low and high pass filter which is accessible on the software and sets once you disconnect. Software has drum beats and a loop! You can also use this as an audio interface. Extremely capable tool. I’m moving to the mighty plug pro2. Asking for £100+shipping. I think this is fair considering the cable and power lead. Happy for collection if you are in London. happy to answer any questions.

Being Gig Fit (Like Match Fit in football)
Delberthot replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
Ive always been a believer in having to be physically fit to gig regularly. You often have to lift x number of times your own bodyweight in gear, set it up, stand for up to 4 hours playing a 10lb bass with a break in the middle to replenish your energy by beasting into the buffet, strip everything down, lift it back out to the car/van, drive home then unload it all into the house/garage. I'm coming up for 50 and want to gig for as long as i can so I'm at the gym 2-3 times a week. I walk all day at work and go walking at the weekends. Not to mention eating healthily and getting plenty of sleep. -

IEM Conundrum ....... possible solution??
Phil Starr replied to Pirellithecat's topic in PA set up and use
Pre fader every time for me. As David says you don't want anything you do to FOH adjusting someone else's monitor mix, generally you want a clean feed to monitors anyway. A lot of singers are put off by delay or excessive reverb even when it sounds really good out front. Most musicians are happy with a clean version of what they are doing anyway. As I said above I keep the settings on the monitor the same as front of house and then globally eq the monitors to match the FOH sound as best I can. I'd also advise against tweaking the main mix during gigs if you are mixing from on-stage unless there is something seriously wrong, a mic going down or a guitar swap forced by a broken string and the like. You've pretty much no idea what the audience are hearing so are much more lkely to make the sound worse not better if you tweak in the basis of the on-stage sound. I use a radio connection for my bass though so I can wander out mid song in an emergency. It doesn't look very professional though IMO -

For me, one of the things that can make acoustic guitar so beguiling is alternative tunings that are used. Something that, in my experience, electric guitarist rarely seem to do.

IEM Conundrum ....... possible solution??
David Morison replied to Pirellithecat's topic in PA set up and use
If you're only using one mixer, then the faders' main function is to control the main mix (desks with fader flip notwithstanding). As we usually don't want out monitor mix changing every time we tweak the FOH mix, pre-fade is the default for monitor sends. If you don't have a dedicated FOH engineer, and you rely on your monitors to get an idea of what the main mix is sounding like, then you might be better with post fade. -

Being Gig Fit (Like Match Fit in football)
ossyrocks replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
All of us in my band are in our 60’s. It is physically harder than it used to be for me. To keep up general fitness, I try to walk every day, usually about 3 miles, but sometimes up to 4. Then maybe once a week my wife and I will do a longer one, up to 7 or 8 miles with a break halfway. The night before gigs, I’ll not have much alcohol, and try to get an early night. On the day of the gig, we all try to give ourselves plenty of time to get there and set up without rushing around, it’s important to feel relaxed before we play. Obviously, lightweight gear helps too. I tend to practice for an hour or two every evening, and will focus on the band numbers in the run up to gigs and rehearsals. Rob -
Funnily enough I do run two businesses where I make a profit, but neither of those involve music gear! I think I can accept some losses on gear. It’s the cost of ownership I guess.
