J-Retro with Precision and Musicman pickups

Really enjoyed that @Stofferson, and yes great bass tone (and playing) 🙏 -
If the store doesn't help you, find a friend that knows electronics. Exclude faulty components until you know for sure, what is broken. Maybe he can fix it for you? bartolini, Lollar, SD, EMG... there are lots of options available.

Some people recommend olive oil for leather which is a bad idea. I guess it depends on the quality of the olive oil, but I was told it will deteriorate fairly quickly and potentially degrade the material. It certainly does for leather, for example.

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
Stub Mandrel replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
Our drummer evaporated after last week's rehearsal due to back issues. We have a new one on board for the originals as of last night. A bit more oomph but not too loud. Interestingly we started with a song that has an awkward stop with a five-beat bar. This used to cause the previous drummer to slow down, the new chap was rushing it. I took my Epiphone Embassy, I think I've found the right bass for this band. It has a growly sound but the blend and tone controls are effective. Not loud last night but even the singer described my sound as having 'girth'. Working on originals is fascinating. I had two competing basslines for the next song, the one originally on fretless is now the chorus. The chords don't change but what we all play changes. my line is a harmony line up an octave and not following the roots. I've also come up with a really unusual intro. We finished with a third song that demands a JJ Burnell style plectrum line, with some jagged rhythm and lots of clanky growl. Working on this one is improving my plectrum skills. Very different from sitting alone learning songs then just getting together to polish arrangements. -

No it doesn't affect the VU, the Passive / Active switch makes a big difference though. I never get it high on most basses other than the bongo though, but I would think that the G&L wouldn't have an issue.

Question: Filling pocket screw holes on maple neck
Joe Nation replied to Grooverjr's topic in Repairs and Technical
Trouble with doing that is you're putting the screws into end-grain. This is fine for tuners, pickguards etc, but neck screws are under a lot of load and ain't worth risking IMHO (especially on a heel adjuster). If you can find cross-grain dowel or use a plug cutter it can work fine though. Personally I'd go for inserts and bolts - use a drill press or a guide block to ensure the holes are square (perpendicular to the surface, obviously they need to be circles). -

Or go to consumer protection.

If I had ~£550 to spend on a new active jazz that would be my choice too, if passive was suitable maybe an FGN Boundary. Can also pick up a used GB Modern 4 for that sort of money.

Cheapest Fender or most expensive Squier?
Stub Mandrel replied to Joe Nation's topic in Bass Guitars
If I was in that position I'd buy the Squier CV going for £250 s/h on here... It is literally a swap of a logo for other features. If you don't want active and are happy with a basic selection of colours, the playability is likely to be indistinguishable. -

I would buy a used Fender - £549 will get you a decent one.
