I run a Clarett +8 octopre ADAT expander to my main interface (Apollo 8xp - not the current model). The stock preamps on the Clarett+ are really impressive and easily on par with the UAD stock preamps. The UAD preamps only become superior when you use the Unison DSP preamps, however with good mic placement I don't consider the Unison preamps to be the be all end all (especially when most of the popular UAD preamps are going native). Prior to the Apollo I had a second generation Scarlett, which was perfectly fine, but I did think that the Clarett + was a good step up. The new model Scarletts are exceptional for the price though. The only thing I don't like about the 8 input Clarett interfaces is that phantom power is done in banks of 4 rather than per channel. Normally this isn't a problem but if I only had a Clarett 8pre to record drums and had 6 dynamic close mics and two condenser overheads then I am kinda screwed unless I get additional channels via ADAT. I think that the 8 channel Scarlett would be a better bet as I believe that it has independent phantom power per input. The Clarett stuff definitely gets a big thumbs up from me.

Similar journey for me with multiple FIs! I would like to give the v4 a proper go, though, as Peter's latest upgrades taking some ideas from the MXR, in return, do sound good! Particularly if I can get hold of one of the mini version used. The FI is Mohini Dey's fav synth pedal! (Btw some of us are very grateful for your continued stocking of the BC effects for sale - still loving my GT1000 Core, it's been an excellent upgrade after several years of Zoom B1-4!)

my favourite tone shaping DI currently is the Origin Effects Blackface 64. One of these, a tuner and a Cali76 and i could gig with that

Mike, pm your payment details please. Not 100% sure I can make it but hoping to be there.

The drummer on the original recording was Tony Allen. Anyway, the question has come up before, with...

Fela Kuti's Afrobeat was a mixture of Nigerian music and American Jazz and Funk, mixed with Nigerian politics. So who was appropriating what? What does it matter that Kiri Te-Kanawa sang Mozart or Yo-Yo Ma plays Bach, or Howlin Wolf toured being backed by the (very white and very British) John Dummer Band? Influences are good. Mozart and Muddy Waters had them. Take them from where ever you can, and make your music to the best of your ability.

Looks like they're doing well. I know The Lanes in Brizzle is a decent venue. My daughter is off on tour next spring but I've no idea where or even with which band! I think its her shoegaze band at uni but could be the grunge band.

Can you post yours just in case it works for me?

I know of whom you speak!

I do really like the FI, but there must be some reason (other than I'm very fickle!) that I think I've bought/sold the v3 twice and the v4 once. It's difficult to put my finger on exactly what, but for me there is just something about it that ends up frustrating me and thinking 'time to get back to playing'! The octave jump tracking warble thing annoyed me with v3 (I think it's sorted with v4), and v4 I dunno but it took me many hours trying to connect it to my Laptop and in the end I gave up. That was almost certainly an issue with my Laptop, but I haven't had that issue with any other pedals or interfaces (other than the NUX MLD Preamp) so in a way it is an issue with the FI - It'd be like not being able to start a car and the manufacturer saying 'ah yes, but did you open the passenger door first - because it won't work if you do that, and did you remember to put your seatbelt on before putting the key in - because it won't start otherwise'. I think that hands-on, low-fuss elements are what is making the MXR so popular particularly for live use.

The 4 digits are the DMX codes, sadly there is no real standard. I bought some Mini Pars from one company and could not get it to work. It turned out that the codes had changed between the Mk1 and MK2 but the DMX protocol in the User Manual was not updated. One of the codes is rfof, any help with that as it is not DMX. Also on my other lights there is SouN which is sound to light. No such code on this one.

That is a lovely thing. i really like the aesthetic of the slightly modernized Ali Express knockoff rics and this does that really well but you also know it will actually play well!

100%. Also there might be a couple of people who like it and ask who the tune is by, thus getting turned on to looking into Fela, his work and message more deeply. I'm sure the man himself would have approved of this.

All cut for four-in row headatock GHS Pressurewounds (102-44) used for literally 2 minutes. Too low tension for me £30 Fender 9050L used for around 1 hour. Not a fan of the feeling under my plucking fingers £20 La Bella LTFs used for around 2hrs. Too low tension for me. Silks rattier than playing time would suggest £25 all prices include UK P&P

This is going to go straight into Reform UK, political correctness gone mad BS so I’m out. Have a good gig whatever you decide.

Not at all. In my Chicago blues band we play a song called “little schoolgirl”. The singer explains that the lyrics are a bit dodgy, but it’s a fun song. World has changed and it’s worth reflecting on that.

Cultural appropriation and covers

Yeah, definitely do not copy the accent and appearance, that would be pretty seriously cringe, and border parody. As always with covers, respect the original material, by doing it your way! -
He welcomed Ginger Baker into his band on many occasions. I went to see the Fela Kuti show at Sadler’s Wells and Femi got up and sang a few songs. the audience was predominately white British and the band was white French. None of which mattered a jot to anyone present.

It seems to me that more often than not it isn't the ones that are 'appropriated' that get offended - it is other people getting offended on their behalf. I think the biggest risk is if it is a straight-up copy (including accents and clothes etc) it starts to obviously not be genuine and seems a bit naff. 'Keep it real' and all that.
