It was fab to see you there, Dan. A good evening all round. And you did a darned sight better on Spain than I ever could have done. Nicks a crazy good guitarist (he was in Jeff Beck’s band for a few years 😲) but, as you’ll have seen a lovely chap. I do love the jam. Great playing and zero ego. Look forward to seeing you again some time and hopefully more chance to chat if I’m not babysitting a very nervous lad about to do his best Mick Jagger to Jennie’s Carly on You’re So Vaiin.

This version is from one of my favourite albums, but Bela Fleck did a Bluegrass version, and there's always the original Chick Corea version (with no guitar 😱)

Testing the water, as im thinking of selling my USA Stingray 4HH (Ash/Rosewood) to try and get a stingray 5. Its a 2006 model in Sapphire Black (kind of a charcoal grey sparkle) with a moonstone pickguard (lovely green/silver). Its the 2 pickup model with the 5 way switch, but i mostly use it on back pickup or both, which gives me the classic ray bark, or a very modern dual humbucker tone reminiscent of a WAL or MM Sabre. Single coil positions are available which remind me of a grindy Rickenbacker tone (but ricky owners would disagree) Its in decent condition, but has been well played. The neck is a beautifully flamed maple which has darkened to a lovely patina, i have been waxing it. Its quite wide like a P bass, but very shallow front to back, so is very comfortable, with a sumptously rich dark rosewood fingerboard. Theres some oxidisation on the pickups, as well as one or two very small dings in the finish (which is pretty much spot on), very much in keeping with its age. The downside its a monster and weighs nearly 11llbs, yes i realise 90% are now wincing. Theres no OHSC regretabbly, but ive a semi hard case ill include. Im primarily looking for a straight trade with a Stingray 5 (no Indonesean sterlings please) im not too bothered about the condition, as long as it doesnt look like it was buried with the Pharoahs, i may sell as theres a very nice and unique Stingray 5 in the classfieds. Im putting a price up that id take to sell, but like most stingrays id rate the trade value as higher. A 90s Stingray 5 in Teal or honeyburst or red would make me very happy, maple or rosewood, i dont mind. Ill be happy to keep this, as it sounds amazing in my 5 piece rock band, it really cuts through. I reserve the right to come to my senses and withdraw this 🤣

Me too at college. Couldn't play it now! 😆

Yeah but only because Camel and Van der Graaf are there as well

More of the same. I'm learning them on the upright. Damn but those guys are good! We're doing it with just vox, bass, guitar, and reduced drum kit, so don't have the orchestration which means we have to do our own versions. I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible so long as they sound good, so my walking bass lines are mostly arpeggios or chromatic.

They've just left, should be with you soon. I know what you mean about the money, fortunately there's a Nigerian prince who's going to sub me.

Are you sure? £7 in 1976 is £47.02 today!

I'd definitely have paid £7 to see Brand X and 801 on the same weekend (and it was one of the only three gigs 801 did) weather was appalling though, so I'd have to be beamed in by time machine bubble then magicked away again

You all are right. The reason is because pro soundguys on the rock circuit are all about getting the band sounding as loud as possible, and that typically means the bass pays the price since they boost the shit out of the kick subs and attack and let the guitars dominate the mids. It sucks. Had a soundguy for a long tour that I spent a lot of time with and talked to other FOH guys and that was what they were all about. Their fear is coming on after another band and not being as loud, which I understand since loud is better to the average listener. The best way to compete and try and get in there is to put more hair on your tone. Works really well with a J since it will cut at around 800hz. The P needs rounds. It also helps a lot to use a pick if at all possible.

When replacing the barrel jack, extend the leads if necessary (heatshrink on the joints, of course) so that you can pull them through the jack socket hole and solder outside the control cavity rather than fiddling around inside it. Note: don't forget to thread the leads through the nut inside the control cavity before passing them out. Barrel jacks are a consumable item.

An entirely deliberate one, in contrast to motorcycle troubleshooting - if it seems like a fuel problem it's electrical, and if it seems electrical then it's a fuel problem.

Exactly how I feel. Unfortunately if my band folded I could never find a band situation like the one I'm in with Maple Road. The nicer bookings. I'm driven to our gigs My bandmates and band leader are incredible. Very good money. Daryl

Agreed, however the baby boomers here are not giving up on going out. Many still indulging in their old habits. We draw an older crowd. A lot of them, like me in their 70s. They grew up when live music was a huge part of their lives (the Woodstock generation). These folks are still going out and thank God they don't know when to quit. I was talking to an 80 year old guy at our gig last Saturday night. He was talking about the fact that he still drives, lives independently. He said loves the grooves and loves to dance. Daryl
