I've tried my V4B thru my Ashdown RM410 cab at the weekend It sounded great before the guitards turned up so loud I couldn't hear anything (and subsequently I had to stop the gig, on another thread) I've got some Ampeg silver grill cloth, which I'm going to cover the Ashdown in, so that it matches

A few pics of my archlute (Austrian, 1973); sometimes referred to as a theorbo, but a theorbo is more usually a shorter baritone instrument, whereas this is the full bass daddy, an inch under 6 ft long. I do play Renaissance 8-course tenor lute (included in last 2 pics) for scale) but I've had the archlute lying around for years without getting to grips with it. Actually not an insurmountable step, as it's essentially a standard fretted tenor lute with a set of unfretted bass drone strings on the bass side, like a harp. It was mainly used for continuo playing to accompany voice and/or other instruments, but there was solo music written for it mainly in late Renaissance / early baroque Italy by composers such as Kapsberger . A few regrets with this as I traded my favourite mandolin for it (a 1975 Mike Vanden F5), but if / when I finally hang up the bass guitar I'll hopefully have the time and motivation be able to tackle learning it. Also the 5-string banjo sitting idle in its case.....
  5. Photos to follow as I need to get it from storage. In the meantime, please PM if you’re interested and I’ll get a groove on! This case came from a bass that is 1994 and 1997 hybrid, so within that period, and matches other cases from that period. I don’t really need the case though.
  6. This is an original Music Man preamp, 2EQ, from 2010. Comes with the original input jack too. I have left two wires attached to the preamp in case you do not want to solder the pickup wires direct to the circuit board. I have an original banana plate that I may consider selling too should you need it.
  7. This is reminding me of the music teacher who took our high school big band. He'd go off on these diatribes about swing and how if you had to ask, you did not got it, like some parody of a 50s jazz cat. Perhaps not the most effective way to educate.
  8. I use nothing but flats myself, for both the tone and the feel. From what I hear in a jazz context an electric bass with rounds doesn't sound right and gets in the way (though others may disagree), but it's probably quite different in other genres. To answer the question - pedals. Over the years I have tried various ones, e.g. reverb, wah, fuzz because I thought I ought to but always end up discarding them and plugging straight into the amp.

I know exactly what you mean - I was brought up on the glassy clear tone, but not because I'm a crazed slap addict - Mainly, it's because Singers, Wind & Brass players all pitch from the overtones/upper harmonics that occur naturally from the bass. If you have a 'cupboard full of blankets' worth of flats, or dead, old and lifeless strings, they have nothing to pitch from. Having a clean and bright (but also rich and bassy) sound is essential for me. * Your blankets analogy made me laugh out loud! 🤣🤣🤣
  11. Fretless neck is here. Bolted on (first time I’ve done that) and tuned up. It’ll need time to settle but it sounds brilliant! I’ll leave it for a day or two as currently there’s a bit of back bow so once the strings add some force the other way it’ll either be right or need some truss rod adjustment. The fit and finish of the ebony board replacement is great, I think it’ll come up really nicely with some epoxy.

As a practical user of the BSW, I have barely scratched the surface of it, but I'm always in mode 7 (OctaSub) - there's a super squelchy synth sound which I use in half of one song, and in a few songs I use the suboctave it provides on its own ("control" knob set appropriately, "range" knob off - that's the synth) because it's a pretty damn good suboctave.

Yet another one here who succumbed to peer pressure and bought some flats despite having tried them several times over the years and never getting on with them as I had that nagging doubt that I must be missing something. A special shout out goes to La Bella flats. You've no doubt heard the cliché about how some new piece of gear 'lifts the blanket off the speaker' in terms of the wonders it does for your tone. Well, the La Bellas added that blanket to my speakers. Not a thin cotton sheet either, a full on 18 tog winter duvet. Then another. And another. Then half a dozen more. Just an indistinct dull thud with no note information. And for context, I'm not a big fan of bright bass sounds, I don't like that glassy high end tone that slappers use, but I like enough upper mid and treble to be able to distinguish pitch. And this was on an MEC equipped Warwick which I find to be pretty bright sounding pickups.
  19. The only thing I can think of is the Digitech Bass Synth Wah. Which I got new for £34 (I believe I got it just before they stopped making them). I had no idea what I might do with it, but I do sometimes enjoy mucking about with it.
  20. Dignity is one of my all-time favourite songs, thanks for that fantastic rendition. I really like how they pulled the carbon cloth around to match the contours of the headstock, makes it look so much more organic.
  21. Have you considered a bass ukulele? They're very portable and have a great tone. Before I bought mine I was told it had a "double bass sound" and I didn't believe that, and arranged to meet up with an old band mate to try his - and I was amazed at the tone.
  22. Definitely sounds like the neck is too straight. Did you recently change string gauges? Set the bridge saddles to your desired string height, then try adding loosening the trussrod a quarter turn at a time. Some necks like a little more relief than you'd think, especially if you like quite a low action (around 2mm at the 12th.)

  24. been using my monaco for about a month now and its really, reeeally great. I've had a barefaced super twin and currently own a vanderklay mnt210 and mnt212. Its definitely louder than the 210, sounds clearer and more accurate than the super twin and is waaaay smaller than the vander 2x12. no problem with volume at outdoor gigs, it really punches and gets super low when needed. standing close on stage the vertical high end dispersion is really good as claimed. I'm really happy - and selling some vanderklay cabs if anyone's looking!

  26. Selling this Micro Fuzz from Kong. Comes with a blend Knob so no lowend loss. 2 types of fuzz, “bass” side is more of a vintage germanium type, the “treble” side is a trebly fuzz. In as new condition, never mounted on a pedalboard nor gigged. £30 posted within mainland UK.
