I favour a passive jazz. Battery anxiety is one of the drivers for change.

Stripping and staining walnut body - advice please

That looks like nice stuff. I used mineral oil (stuff they use to help seal chopping boards, not the brake fluid!) and beeswax on a table with a rather uninspiring grain and colour and it does a great job of accentuating what is there without changing anything too much, so that may also be an option when the time comes, although it does need quite regular retouching. -

Expensive is so relative. The two basses I paid over my 'expensive' threshold, were both made possible because I completed large chunks of work. I've been through long periods where spending £50-100 could mean many months of saving. I am having to be careful now, as I need as many savings as possible to buy somewhere when dad's house is sold and split three ways. So those two big purchases (and my rig) were really special; both were cheaper alternatives to genuine vintage instruments I could never afford but give me a feeling of connection to music I love.

Ah, I was dreading that kind of answer, but at the same time it was exactly why I asked the question so thanks for the warning. I can see from the area under the neck screw plate that the finish is very gloppy. I don't have a power sander or a well-ventilated space to work in (small flat, basic toolbox - good name for an experimental album 😁). Looks like I might need to just live with it being an ugly duck until we get going on a building project we have in mind for the next year or two and then I should have access to both. I have been warned about the surrounds and the whole pup fixing / height adjustment sensitivity so I will be very careful with that when the time comes. -

If you’re used to a MM bas then I’d probably opt for an active Jazz just to make swapping on a gig easier.

The DM610 is a large bookshelf/standmount speaker from renowned hi-fi brand B&W, featuring a well-braced 30-litre sealed cabinet with 8-inch mid-bass driver. The larger driver and extra cabinet space create a much better low end range than from most similar speakers. This model allows for either bi-wiring or bi-amplification. These speakers present clean tight bass response, surprisingly clear mids for such a large driver and the pleasant highs that the well-designed B&W tweeter at that time was famous for. They can be driven quite loud, enough for the physical effect of the bass to be felt without audible distortion or a sense of sound compression. Both speakers are in Very Good condition, especially for their vintage. All-original, complete with full grilles (one of which has a small hole, shown in the final photo). Only £125. Collection from Bournemouth BH6 preferred. Here comes the science bit… Type: 2-way closed, shelf speaker Colour: Ash black veneer Dimensions: 490 x 236 x 303 mm (H x W x D) Weight: 7.8 kg Recommended amplifier power: 30-150 W Frequency response: 70 - 20,000 Hz (±2 dB) Crossover: 2500 Impedance: 4 Ohm

I've owned this Jaguar for about ten years and feel like I'm due for something new. It plays and sound brilliantly, looks fantastic. It has a few wear and tear marks on the body and headstock (see pics) but nothing major. Comes with Fender gig bag. Not looking for trades but a straightforward sale. I'm in London but can post to anywhere suitable. Let me know if you have any queries!

I'd buy the Adam Clayton signature jazz, if I wanted a jazz I did have a Flea jazz and it sounded awesome

S'simple! If you record with, say, a single SM58 mic you'll get a single channel of sound, from one perspective. That's M, or mono. If you record with a pair of sm58s, whether crossed over or just a distance apart, you'll get 2 channels, left and right (or A and B) which are two independent mono recordings but with slight differences due to being in different positions. Mathematically speaking, L and R added together are the same as the mono signal. But if you subtract Right from Left, you'll get the difference between the two which is known as S, or side. So it's possible to record, or work in, M and S, which means you can boost or cut the S signal to give bigger or smaller stereo soundstage when converted back to L&R. If you use any stereo or imaging boost software (Ozone has it) that's effectively what it's doing.

Am I invisible? Did I stutter? It's a QUAD coil. I used pictures and everything! Yes, because the two pairs (so that's four then) can only be addressed as individual pairs (in that each pair of coils are joined together inside the pickup then present the each end of that pair as a wire) then it logically becomes a dual "coil" situation, it's more like two units, than two coils. I may be splitting hairs here, but technically correct is the best kind, and I'm a little cross that I've basically been talked over/around in my own effing thread

I expect the Chinese Hofner (Contemporary and Ignition) violin basses outsell the German built ones many, many times over, which couldn't have helped. As an example, out of curiosity I bought a couple of the cheapest Hofner Ignition violins to decide a) whether I liked violins at all, and b) which pickup positions I preferred. I chose the Ignition basses because their construction is a little closer to the hollow body originals, not having the full maple centre block of the Contemporaries. I then very briefly owned a genuine German violin bass, but to be honest, the Ignitions got pretty darn close sound, feel and weight-wise so the German went back and I still have the Ignition. It may get gigged when I need a featherweight shortscale in my old(er) age. It's a shame when anything "iconic" disappears, but such is commerce.

For those who prefer an alternative slant of his on Christmas check out Joys of Christmas from Dancing with Strangers. And his slide work on That Girl of Mine. Great songwriter.
