In the real world the way your brain uses your ears and eyes, being 3.4m away from your cab in a typical room is not the same is having the sound piped directly into your ears with a 10ms delay.

I find it easier to use the notes on the G string if I'm reading music. I score out bass parts for the bands I'm in. None of them play particularly frequently, so it's so much easier and more time efficient for me to turn up to a rehearsal or gig and read the bass part rather than try to memorise a whole set again. If there are notes G or above (i.e. the same octave as the G string) it's easier for me to play those notes on the G String rather than jump up to a different position in a split second. It was the same when I had a 6 string bass with the C string, although that string was needed far less frequently.

I know you want real-world experience which I don't have, but AFAICS to me it looks like a marketing gimmick. Firstly based on those brands that actually show the tension figures, "balanced" tension IS NOT equal tension (it's not even close), and anyway IMO what feels "balanced" is entirely subjective. The only way I think that balanced tension could be made to work is if they also take compliance into account so all the strings feel about equally "stiff". However compliance depends on the construction and stringing method of the instrument as much as it does on the construction of the string itself. That means while the strings may feel balanced on one type of bass they won't necessarily feel balanced on others. I suspect that if you have a Fender style, 4-string, 34" scale bass, without using through-body stringing and favour standard string gauges, a balanced tension set may feel more "even" compared with a standard set, but even then it's going to be subjective, and after years of playing using sets where the A and E strings are noticeably lower in tension than the D do you really want strings that feel closer to the same stiffness? You are also limited to a few string brands that offer balanced tension, mainly D'Addario, so you may not like the choices available. It's one of the reasons I haven't tried them myself because whilst all my guitars are strung with D'Addario strings I haven't liked the sound or feel of any of their bass strings that I have used.

When I get a chance I will test that to see what it is. Cetainly doesn't sound dull (and I have bright strings) and I haven't noticed a distortion, although honestly when gigging I am not going to be that concerned about a 6khz roll off, this doesn't have to be hifi

I had a rehearsal with my old style metal band last night and the only times I used the G was the intro to one song which is E, D, G power chords with the octave above the root added in. Other than that,its all on the E and A strings other than fills getting in to the D string.

I have a set arriving today from Thomann and intend to check them out over the weekend so will let you know first impressions. Mind you they were so (relatively) cheap I figured best to just try them rather than dive in at the £400/500+ end of the market!

Well, well, well!!! Took it to band practice last night. My word this thing LOVES a distortion pedal and being played with a pick! Who'd have thought it?!?! The rehearsal room had a lovely Trace Elliot head and 4x10 last night and the combination was pretty glorious.

I disagree wrt control layout. You have vok, blend and passive tone conveniently placed with 3 band eq placed further back. Those first 3 controls are the ones that certainly I use the most. Stacked knobs wouldn't make much of a saving and tbh they're often more hassle than benefit.
