I suspect the effort that it may take to get AI to write a hit single might be similar to the effort of a person writing it from scratch... But for remastering/recording/adding instrumentation I think it is a tool that is here to stay, and sadly will take people's jobs.

Has anyone in UK bought a bass from Fender 'Mod Shop'?
Twigman replied to Twigman's topic in Bass Guitars
I went and bought an American Vintage2 '66 Jazz instead of going the mod shop route.... maybe next time -

Struggle to make the Boss Katana 110 combo sound nice
Thrillho_12 replied to Thrillho_12's topic in Amps and Cabs
Shall give this a go. Though I don't think I'm putting much strain on it at all. I have noticed that pretty much any gain at all makes it a bit flabby. -
I know, but I think it was a low blow to take my specific objection to Generative AI in the music context then frame it as some sort of argument about being against doctors getting help to identify cancer. Frankly, I was a little disappointed by that and it made me sad - I think you took that too far.

Says it's in N16 postcode when you click on it, might just be an eBay thing. -
Can anyone explain this? The amp has developed a fault that two people have been unable to identify. The amp has developed a n intermittent fault where it 'howls' for a few seconds at a time. When it is howling, there is no instrument signal getting through. When it is not howling, it sounds perfect, not the slightest hum. Here is a video of the howl. It happens on both channels with an instrument plugged in or not. It's not the instrument, the leads or the speaker. The fault is definitely in the amp. Acoustic Image are no longer operating so I can't go back to the source although there is an email address on the website I have contacted and am waiting for a response. Any ideas? Nice idea but only a choice of a P or J bass (no Mustang option available) means that even if I had a couple grand burning a hole in my pocket I wouldn't go for it. -
Yeah but what we're facing is a subset of AI impacting all our lives - the wider point provides the context for this discussion. So, for me, it's entirely relevant and, as musos, I don't feel we can say "it's ok to be using AI in X, Y and Z because it doesn't impact me guv and I'm very happy to use it when it's someone else's job on the line, but not in music", and then expect anyone to give us a fair hearing? At the end of the day our fates are going to be decided by what other humans want to use / pay for / listen to. I think kite-marks of authenticity (e.g. ai assisted) have got to be a way forward and that's a pressure point we can and should be pushing the industry to adopt?

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2025?
Stub Mandrel replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I have a cheap 'Cube Baby'. The improvement in the sound through an (allegedly) FRFR speaker when I switch in any IR into the signal chain is very noticeable. This suggests speaker colouration of the sound IS important, so what is going on? -

In ABM the main thing you have to remember is that the Shape filter switch has to be pushed IN to turn the filter OFF. Start from that. The amps do have HUGE amount of low end - and I found it hard to tame in their tube range (CTM,Little Bastard, 330 and 550 Spyder) The Subharmonic Generator is a fantastic "sound magnifier" rather than typical octave effect. I love it, but it won't make my OC-2 and EBS Octabass go away. On the other hand - neither Boss OC-2 or EBS Octabass are capable of producing range of tones available Ashdown ABM Subharmonic. EQ - i really like the way EQ is presented. As Mark said - use three knobs if you want to find basic tone, then fine-tune with sliders if needed. Taming low end by slightly backing off the knob helps a lot. I own wide range of amps and preamps SWR, Ampeg, Fender, Markbass... but the ABM with it's aesthetics and sound is my favorite toy for now

Fender CIJ Mustang bass in excellent condition. Bought from top BCer lozz196 a few months back. It really is a fabulous bass and I am only selling to fund the purchase of a bass on this forum that I really desire! Therefore no trades, thanks. Serial number dates it to 2007-2010. Nicely creamy olympic white body. Has an after market black 3 ply scratchplate (as I wanted a punkier/rockier look) but comes with original tortoiseshell scratchplate (pictured). Also has a string retainer fitted to hold A string taut, but this is entirely removable. Weighs just under 8 pounds and comes with new Fender gigbag. Wearing La Bella Deep Talkin' Mustang flatwound strings. Price of £700 is a chunky discount from what I paid, especially considering the new scratchplate, strings and gigbag, but hopefully reflects post-Christmas economic reality. Collection from a safe public space in SW13 London (Barnes) or delivered for an extra £20.

The drum and some of the synth parts for when my band plays gigs aren't "performed" by a human. Although I've done the programming, there was very little playing or performance involved. Most of it involved dragging "notes" around on a grid until I got the parts I wanted. Also most of the programmed synth parts are pretty complex but have lots of repetition. From previous experience we would struggle to find a keyboard player with the required technical ability to play them, regardless of the fact that on their own the parts are rather boring. IMO it's far better to hand these off to a machine that won't complain about them, and doesn't take up lots of additional room on stage or in the band transport.

I've raised it with Monty's.

DR Hi Beams have killed my StingRay
fretmeister replied to Nick upson's topic in Accessories and Misc
I like Hi Beams but they are expensive so I swapped to Mark Bass Advanced "Soft Touch" rounds for, err, roundwound needs and it turned out I like them a lot more. -
It's the concept which I find insulting, I didn't mean you were personally being insulting to me directly. Sorry for the ambiguity.

Don't do that. The title of this thread is "AI in music", so let's keep it relevant? And no, I have never used ChatGPT. I have no desire to either. I've got a brain, and despite what my frequent word salad spewed around here might suggest, it's reasonably competent at times

AI for finding a cure for cancer is good. AI for replacing people's jobs, absolutely not good. As far as music goes, we survived Synths, so we can get through this. IMO the bigger problem is that younger kids don't see live music as a thing. It's as interesting to them as golf. They have their songs on Spotify, playing on their phones, it's musical wallpaper. My musical career has gone from cutting edge to historical. 90% of the music I get asked to play is from the 20th Century. When AI has its own programs on Radio 4 I'll start getting annoyed.
