USA Stingray -v- USA Sterling. Is the pickup placement the same?
fretmeister replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
That's kind of interesting in itself. I've found a few photos of stingrays with tape measures on the neck showing the pickup distance from the nut, and various youtube vids with measurements. And it seems over the years they have varied in placement by a good 5-6mm. As we know from 1960/1970 jazz basses where the bridge pickup is only 9mm further back on the 1970s one even a little movement can make quite a difference. -
Kithara short scale - anyone tried one of these?

Some short scales are on the pricey side: http://www.schorrguitars.de/the-owl-bass/ Check how to order for prices. -

They seem like a great band, and nicely done to them for that. I must admit I'm not a fan of meet and greet for anything - music / film etc, but I can see the appeal particularly for younger fans. For me, I like the mystery of not knowing anything about them. I find it easier to just watch the performance then. Knowing the real person for me somehow diminishes the stage persona / role. -
I'm going to rehearse this bass tomorrow evening so can give some better feedback afterwards, although I'm starting to fall just a little bit in love with it already to be honest, the action goes stupidly low and given the is very smooth and solid it rather feels like I'm playing a Modulus or Status 🤔

I've seen him live and he sounded so good, but couldn't understand what happened there in the fretboard. Watching and hearing made my brains go crazy.

I’d look to buy one from someone on Basschat or through an experienced dealer. A new bridge, set of strings and a set up can easily set you back £500 or more. Double basses look like they’re tough to play, and they are if you try and apply electric basses technique. If you learn the right technique and have a bass that’s well set up, you shouldn’t experience any pain.

I want to make a 2-unit wooden sleeve rack

Aah, it's in the garage. MDF is also quite moisture prone too, when it's stored in a hot/cold (damp?) environment, it'll effectively delaminate (even though the product isn't laminated); it'll just start splitting along it's length! -

I met him in Manchester and he was taciturn and rude. Turns out it was the night before he was going to be outed by the press for smoking crack so he had a reason! -

Impossible to answer, I'd probably expect a smaller margin with little 'bonanza sale' wiggle room.

Beautiful Bass. You should really be wearing a Wilcox tee shirt though...rather than another 'W' Luthier!

I always used 60’s winds but then nabbed a set of these PV 74’s. They’re top notch and there’s definitely something about the way they sound which is super pleasing. They’re forward and ‘aggressive’ but dialling back the tone knob mellows things out beautifully. Dare I say more versatile in a bass than a 60’s set! Cracking deal on these which I’d snap up if I had a spare jazz bass kicking about!

I sometimes wonder if Bass Direct get a preferential buying rate from Dingwall. They always seem to have the lowest prices. Or maybe they take a smaller margin from the sale price on Dingwalls?
-
Yes I think you're right. Had a really good chat with bassbags who were very encouraging and would make everything easy. They would give me a call if their van was heading to Scotland, but even with shared travel costs it's going to be pricey. I'll keep my eyes out for a beater bass in the meantime to get started.

USA Stingray -v- USA Sterling. Is the pickup placement the same?

Think it is absolutely identical. Back pickups on Ray and Sterling USA models, whether H, HS or HH, are all in the 'sweet spot'. -

I know about the different magnets - it was the placement that bothers me! -
Well I've been putting off drilling the tuning machine holes .... it's basically a horrible job ... I used a 14mm twist drill bit in a variable speed power drill ... going as slow as I could, and eyeballing the correct 90 degree angle of drilling. Easy to go wrong, so slow but sure was the way. Well after a grimly intense 20 minutes I had the holes drilled and the tuners trial fitted ... only to discover a problem ... the rollers were WAY too long for the width of the pegbox. Not only would the holes for the steel rollers have had to go all the way through both sides of the box, but even then the tips would have fouled the brass plate on the other side! This is galling as the neck and tuners were supplied as a unit and clearly supposed to be fitted together. See image below ... the plate furthest away was stood off about 1/4 of an inch with the 'bearing hole' drilled as deep as I dare. I did however still have the set of tuners I replaced on my Stentor bass stashed away ... which, while individual on the Stentor as opposed to set and 'all on a plate' with this set ... the rollers were also 14mm diameter and fitted a pegbox the same width as the one on this Chinese neck. As luck would have it the tuners were identical except for the Stentor ones rollers being brass and actually fitting properly. RESULT!!! So I swapped the rollers over between sets and everything fitted perfectly! I could of course have used my bench grinder to shorten the steel rollers ... but who wants to work that hard? I think keeping the brass theme is nice too. I trial fitted the nut as well and was toying with the idea of gluing it in place as an 'end stop' to make the positioning the fingerboard for gluing a bit easier and faster. Still not decided on that one. The end of the fingerboard has been cut slightly out of the 90 degrees so I'll have to address that first - whichever order I fit nut and fingerboard and nut. busy busy busy 😁
