I certainly admire you guys who do depping roles, I have been playing bass regularly in cover bands for over thirty years and the thought of depping fills me with dread. The thought of possibly learning thirty songs I have (as worse case scenario) never played before, for a one off gig would entail a lot of my time ( I don’t read music ), it’s tough enough learning a couple of new songs a month in the band I’m currently gigging with. Respect to you guys who do it.

Does Thomann regularly make mistakes these days?

They once sent me a euro power lead instead of a uk one. They sorted it. -

Each of my last two orders from Thomann has had a mistake in what I received. Nothing serious, in each order there was a main 'big' item, and then a shopping list of a few smaller bits & bobs. in the first shipment I received a set of 010 electric guitar strings instead of the equivalent 010 acoustic strings I had ordered, and in the shipment I received today they missed out one of the two schaller switch tips I ordered. They put the first order's issue right by sending out the correct strings and I'm sure I'll get the missing switch tip in a week or so now I've sent an email. Have I just been unlucky or do they often make this kind of mistake these days?

Finally managed to get to Bowspeed. The shop is incredible and the staff wonderful. I was given the freedom to try as many bows as I liked from the cheapest to the £2000. I found this was a wonderful chance to trial them. I’m obviously rubbish (still) but even to my untutored and uncultured ears it was clear the difference in sounds and feel. After having my heart settled on a German made bow I tried a lighter pernambuco French bow by a maker called Ary which was (as you’d imagine) more expensive but after lots of backwards and forwards (literally) it was the one I chose after some guidance from the experts there. I had hoped to take it away on approval but this wasn’t a possibility so was given a substantial discount and purchased on the day. When I got home I didn’t want to play it and today I’ve been out playing jazz all afternoon (electric bass). But I’ve given it a 20 minute go and it really is wonderful. I know Bristol isn’t accessible for everyone but the opportunity and freedom to try so many bows is fantastic. My classical aspirations are to play for myself, not more than that, so I can’t ever see me needing an upgrade.

Finding a G&L L2000 Tribute Pickguard
LowEndMatt replied to LowEndMatt's topic in Accessories and Misc
If you still have it, that would be helpful. My goal is to collect all the available tracings I have and put together a repository on a few different bass sites, G&L forums, etc. so people have resources to leverage to save time! Everything helps! -

I’m putting my DB up for sale as another instrument has caught my eye. I bought this on here in 2021 when I made the jump from electric and in the opinion of my teacher and everyone who has played it I got lucky. It’s a large 3/4 (dimensions below) flat back and all carved. To quote the previous owner it’s been well gigged and likely to have been a school bass in a previous life. I play mostly gypsy jazz, so action is fairly low as it’s all pizz. The previous owner listed the bass’ pros as: new ebony fingerboard neck reset new end pin and tailpiece setup for jazz, low action and good strings looks lovely if you like the aged look nice sound He listed the cons as: Pins all around the top, but nothing to affect structural. Not worth taking out lots of scratches and marks Since I’ve owned the bass I’ve had a new adjustable bridge and Full Circle pup fitted by the Bristol Violin Shop. BVS (they’re excellent) also repaired one of the tuners which was loose and did a repair to the neck. The bass has just (as of 6/09/2025) returned from BVS who fixed a split in the back and reset the sound post. It’s ready to gig in other words. The strings are Spiro Lights which are circa 2 years old. It comes with a Westbury soft case which is in very good condition. Obviously I’d expect people to play the bass before they buy it and realise TA11 7DT isn’t viable for many. But I think the bottom line is this: she’s a wonderful war horse at an entry level price with a great sound, a newish Full Circle and nothing immediate to do in terms of set up. Please ask any questions. dimensions fingerboard width at widest point 9cm Nut to bridge length 106cm Bridge to tailpiece 19cm Body length 108cm depth 20cm Body width lower 76cm body width top 53cm Height from top to bottom of body 184cm endpin extends 29cm PS: the dots are ‘stick ons’ and are easily removed

I dep regularly though currently I only dep in one band which makes life easier as I largely know their set from so many gigs now, so at worst only a few newer tunes emerge at short notice at any one time. My advice is really “learn your lines and show up.” Being well prepared, polite, punctual and attentive to the rest of the band onstage will already put you ahead of a great many other players. If you’re lucky you might get a chance in soundcheck to run through any tricky unusual arrangements / endings etc. Bring spares - batteries, leads, strings (see “be well prepared” above). I think I’m usually on the same money as the person I’ve replaced. But really, if I’ve agreed to do a gig for a certain amount then I can’t really grizzle whether someone else is getting paid more or less than me anyway.

Robin is a top bloke. Proof is in the thread below (last post) Short story, he went out of his way to help out. I've caught up with him at a few shows and had a chat. His work is fantastic, really nicely made guitars and basses. https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/472237-fender-jazz-bass-1976-natural-ash-70s-vintage-sold/page/2/#findComment-4949210

Bought a MTD Kingston Z4 bass from David on Friday. Lovely bass, looking forward to playing this at volume. Pleasure to do business with you sir. Thank you 😀🖖

And excellent basses, the John Suhr 2 bands preamps is close to perfection, if it's equipped with it, of course.

How the fan is used, the mechanical design, has in general more impact on the real world noise floor than the fan itself (assuming decent quality fans, and the same air flow + static pressure).

I think we have too much choice. I really want a one pedal solution, but a cheap one, and a small one. Originally I was going to keep using my Microbass3, and add a multi FX like the 60+/Tonex one/HX one. That extra pedal would supply all the modulation/OD sounds. Id not need to run more than one FX at a time so it would be a nice set up. But then, the 60+ and Tonex One also have the amp sims, so in theory I don’t need the MB3, as they can do it all. Only of course there are always going to be something that stops this being a smooth ride. 60+ would be perfect if I loved the tone. Maybe I'll get used to it. ToneX one is more hassle to use. It seems like id have to keep certain patches in sync as id have to have the amp with one effect, then another patch with amp and a different effect. Any tweaks I do to the amp will need to be propagated across to the other versions. HX one doesn't do amps so it's back to a 2 pedal solution, but it does have my much loved BDDI, and the function to switch between two versions would mean normal and OD sounds are sorted. I could i suppose add a Phaser to that. I know the MB3 doesn't do amps either, but I find the tones it does are great, and having all the knobs available makes it easy to use.

Notice has ranged from hours to weeks. Most bands send far more songs than necessary. Biggest issue is usually odd arrangements, learn to anticipate on the fly. Expect up to about 30 new songs usually only 2 or 3 will be tricky. Simplification is ok e.g. a song with lots of minor variations, just play the basic line and maybe improvise. Gotchas are strange key choices and weird arrangements. Same pay as the band, no deductions, no expectation to chip in for rehearsal costs. Only dress code has been 'wear plain black', but don't wear something that draws attention from the band.

For sale is my Studiologic SL73 MIDI Controller keyboard, complete with original power supply, sustain pedal (not shown in photos) and in original packaging. I also have a couple of 3D printed brackets which attach magnetically and can support a light laptop (MacBook 13" for example) and an iPad, which I'm happy to include. I bought this new in November 2024 and it's still in absolutely excellent condition, however I've recently started playing keys in a band and so I've upgraded to the newer version which has an audio interface built in so saves me taking a separate audio interface. Happy to send within the UK via Parcel Force for £10, or can be picked up in Cardiff. I could deliver within 5 miles of the CF14 postcode, and I also drive to Swansea a couple of times a week so I'd be happy to look at delivering in the SA7 postcode or close, or anywhere not too far off the M4 in between.
