You look remarkably good for 71, Daryl. My old man has that thing going on too. he's 88 going 68. Anyway, to answer the question. I've always done it. It's a part of what I am. Not bass per se but playing live music in a band with other people. Bass is #1, though. Basschat is a source of inspiration, trying new gear, buying and selling, listening to new music, it all feeds the monster and gets me back out there. This year has been a series of steep learning curves with so many areas of bass, it's what makes me get out of bed.

My pet piamh is the pronunciation of Irish names.

I’m very late arriving to this party but I thought I’d chime in anyway. I’m a wide & flat neck guy so the Jazz Bass or narrow MM necks hold little appeal for me. I own an early/mid ‘80s BassStar, which I love, and I’ve always wanted an unlined fretless version of same so an unlined fretless P would be top of my list but…. 42mm is actually narrow than my old Modulus. What I’d really like is a 44mm nut that’s pretty flat front-to-back. I’m not sure if that makes me an outlier in my preferences. Next on my list (your poll didn’t allow multiple selections) would be MM necks, also with wide nuts. It would be wonderful to be able to convert my US S.U.B. Model to a DIY Cutlass and I’d happily find another S.U.B. If I knew I could convert that to an unlined fretless. I have no idea if the neck pocket of the pre-EB MM and the later, 6-bolt S.U.B. is the same but I doubt it. In either case, I would like to see headstocks matching the original Fender and MM designs and I don’t know what kind of licensing hassles that would create for you. For me, the real issue is that I’m in the US. The cost of these necks would be a bit of a stretch for me (although I don’t think it’s unreasonable, given the constraints of small-batch manufacturing) but the shipping and new tariff silliness would almost assuredly put these necks out of my reach. I think it’s great that you’re doing this, though, and I hope it all goes well. Status and Moses really left a big hole in the market. I really wish I had grabbed Status necks when they were still available.

I'm already missing PMT - I liked their shop in Cardiff. There were a couple of members of staff there, who I always enjoyed chatting to. Just a few doors away, was the long established Gamlins - which in recent years I didn't visit too often (they were much better back in the 80's) I used to visit GAK in Brighton, whenever visiting my sister in the area. I'll really miss that on my future Brighton trips. One shop that I have fond memories of, was a second-hand shop, selling all sorts of things from furniture, electrical goods and guitars, pedals & amps. The shop was called "Grimwades" of the Canton district of Cardiff. I bought some hi-fi components and records from there, and a bass guitar - a Shaftesbury Rick. I always looked forward to a trip there, because you never knew what you might find. My Dad liked old radios & record players (gramophones) and he used to buy from them when he was a young man. My guitarist said when he saw it he thought it would sound boxy and struggle against a loud drummer. Loads of full bass and loud soon convinced him otherwise!

What a lovely bass. In the late 1960's black was a custom order colour option for Fenders, as was the matching headstock. The original bass that inspired this reissue would have been a spare-no-expense flagship example at the time.
