We've just sacked SM58s from our band! Had a couple of gigs recently where we struggled with taming feedback during the first set but switching over from SM58s to the more directional AKG D7 eliminated the issue and we had a much better band performance in the second set when we and the audience weren't on edge because of feedback creeping in. A fellow bass-player & BL I know well has said he's recently done the same thing in getting rid of SM58s in favour of sE V7s in his band, which while not quite matching the D7 for overall quality, come in at half the price at £75 and also provide a big improvement over the SM58 in terms of feedback performance. I did a quick test of the difference the mics made at the break and the AKG D7 gave us an additional +6dB headroom before feedback kicked in! The two singers in our line-up with SM58s are swapping over to either the AKG D7 or sE V7 depending on their budget.

MrDaveTheBass started following Just Pay App and Marstons
-
My covers band has been offered a gig at a Marstons pub, and we've been told that we'll be paid electronically via the Just Pay app. Up to now we've only ever been paid cash in hand. The app wants lots of personal information to set up an account, driver's licence, home address etc. And we're also worried that there might be tax implications. Has anyone else been paid for a gig through this app, and how did you go about it? Do we need to formally register the band as a business and declare earnings? Whose details did you give to the app? We're only an amateur pub band that plays once a month or so, and after rehearsal space fees and transport costs I doubt that we break even, though being paid for a gig definitely helps towards expenses. Our singer is concerned (as would I be) as it's his details in the app ATM. If anyone could share their experiences or offer any advice I'd be very grateful. Cheers, Dave

Flipping basses for profit – fair game or not cool?

Exactly this. My key reason for buying and selling here is that the feedback system allows me - and my potential seller/customer - to determine a degree of trust between us that I could never get from FB marketplace or Fleabay. Every transaction is caveat emptor but BC gives me some confidence in the person I’m dealing with and, hopefully, gives them some reassurance about me. -
Trace Elliot - Rescue & Restore (and bargain finds)

They are good heads - I've got one - BUT how clean they look on the outside says nothing about how well they work. I'm still struggling with getting rid of the hum on the GP12 head above I grabbed a few weeks back, and increasingly as these get older the more likely that they will have faults. The question I now ask myself is whether the amp is cheap enough for me not to be too concerned if it doesn't work and I (or my far more capable buddy) can't fix it. These are increasingly a gamble, and I think the price needs to reflect the fact you may potentially end up with a very pretty, but not too useful amp. -

I can't be held responsible for any effect my basses might have on you... -
Quite. That's the whole pupose of the rehearsal. Although, as @Stub Mandrel alludes to above regarding skills a dep requires, altering what you're playing to fit the 'talents' of the other members is a skill we all should have if we want to play in bands. We are musicians, being able to 'paint by numbers' doesn't make you a musician. Even classical orchaestras have to rehearse and change what they've 'practiced at home' to fit what the conductor wants and they have specific charted out parts.
