And since english isn't my native tongue, you guys think of every way to make it harder to understand ;-)

Nah, I believe that the English language has a tendency to create acronyms and use them in place of spelling out the corresponding entire phrase. It's meant to make it easier for both speaker and listener to concentrate on the message rather than the - usually long-winded - names. It's not meant to exclude foreigners AFAIK, 'as far as I know' - see what I've done! :)
European languages have never moved in the same direction, I think, and generally only make use of a few acronyms standing for the names of political parties or institutions, or similar. Edited by bluejay

The one that's getting on my thruppnies just now is "teh". I type it almost every time I type "the" & then go & correct it. Makes sentences take twice as long!

These kids today. I am 61 but have (5) children so tend to be in a better position to keep up.
As this is a U.K. forum, I recommend the ADMINs prohibit any use of the language that is not the Queen's English (and I'm a Yank!).

I told my kids that you Brits actually start sentences even in writing with the word "right" and I love it.
Only objection is that I am not sure about your cusine and, most especially, I am leary of Spotted Dick.

Happy New Year
Ordinarily, I would wish you a proserous New Year as well but it appears the politicians are having none of that.

Yeah, our cousine is picky too, and she's leary of spotted dick.

:D Haha - I had the same problem when I first joined the forum and posted a similar request for help with acronyms and forum slang http://basschat.co.u...?showtopic=8559 . I certainly didn't get any lists as comprehensive as the one Hampster provided - I think it should be pinned - it's a good resource for newcomers.

Welcome to the forum John!

P.S. A common one and it's not on hampster's list: GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome... Dangerous condition. :o I wasn't diagnosed until it was too late... eek!
I suffer from this terribly and Im glad you highlighted it because it is indeed dangerous and there is no known cure! :(

On the TalkBass site I frequently see NBD used. Do I take that to mean 'No Big Deal'?
Maybe, over there (they're a strange lot, sometimes...), but here, it's used for 'New Bass Day'. See also NAD= New Amp Day, NDBD=New Double Bass Day and so on. :)
Austin will do that to ya. I got out too late.

Also just figured out that 'SS' can mean Short Scale, Stainless Steel (y'all prob'ly have your own term for that), and Solid State. I feel my smartness growing!

NBD = new bass day, often found after a period of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) of indeterminate length.
There's also FML (f*** my life) but that's for another time...
