1. Any speaker can be used as a subwoofer, even an 8" as long as it is is fed only low end by (ussually) a crossover but Hartke's SBASS out sends only very low, mostly inaudible frequencies. I think I understand now why Hartke dropped the SBASS out idea; no one understands how to use it. I abandon this quest because, as stated initially, when in a venue large enough to warrant this application, I will be direct through the mains anyway.
2. Apparently I am not being clear enough. I will be using the Hartke with a 410 and a 115 without question. The Hartke has a unique low frequency output call "SBass" for sub bass. I would run this line out to a seperate amp (GK BL600) with another or third cabinet for just the low end only. What speaker/cabinet is best for this third, seperate, low frequency only application?
3. Indeed. What I find from the user manual is only this (but nontheless daunting); SBASS Out -This standard unbalanced 1/4" jack provides a line-level (+4 dBu) pre-EQ and pre-Shape (but post-Volume control) output signal which contains subharmonic information from the HA4000. WARNING: Because of the extremely low frequency signal output from this jack, this should only be connected to a separate amplifier (one with a volume control) that is driving a subwoofer. Connecting theSBASS output to an amplifier driving a standard speaker even one designed for bass may cause irreparable damage to the speaker The only other clue is the description of the DBass control in the EQ array; Equalizer (HA4000) DBASS (70 Hz) 0 -> +12 dB Low (140 Hz) ±15 dB Mid Low (sweepable, 40 Hz - 400 Hz) ±15 dB Mid High (sweepable, 300 Hz - 6 kHz) ±15 dB High (5 kHz) ±15 dB
4. Just picked up a Hartke ha4000 to run my Yammie 5 through an Acoustic B410 & B115. It has an SBass out for just low end to a seperate amp/speaker. This fascinates me (don't take much apparently). I will have my GK BL600 at gigs anyway as backup so why not use it for the SBass? My question is: because the Acoustic cabs are sealed, perhaps a ported 15 for the SBass would fill in some missing vibes. I understand that the usefulness of this is diminished when running though the mains (would probably only run the 410) but for the larger venue when not running through the mains... well, you get the idea.
5.
Pretty obvious really - your guitarist is less likely to pick it up and make a tw*t of himself thinking he can play bass!
Andy - Hilarious and true Looking for info on a completely different topic but saw this a laughed out loud. This is exactly right. I am a convert from guitar first to 4 then 5. The transition to 5 didn't take long and was so complete, I sold my 4 'cause it felt like a toy (Ibanez - very narrow neck vs Yamaha BBN5 very wide neck). My guitar player picks up my 5 and struggles. Last time I played my 4 was when I brought it to practice so he could play it. That's when I decided to sell.
6. This is exactly the bass I am looking for. I love my BBN5 with double coil pickups and wanted to try one with single coils but alas, I live in the US.
7. Yes but how many of you know what the tertiary dominant chord is in the key of Bb? I have been told that there is now a guitar which plays in tune no matter how badly it is out of tune. These folks are not musicians but rather "guitar owners".
8. Good question. I play through a GK BL600 (big improvement over the Acoustic B200H which is now relegated to backup) and (2) Acoustic B115 cabs with a BBE DI-100 with Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop. I have an Acoustic B410 on backorder ($150.00 through Woodwind Brasswind - yes, I'm cheap) which should give me a bit more definition on stage. Increased input level and better uniformity throughout the frequency range would be the only things I would want to improve. Based on your experience, it sounds as if I should just stand pat with my stock pickups and perhaps invest in another BBN5 with the J style pickups just for fun.
9. My Yamaha BBN5 ($100.00 craigslist) has stock soap bar pickups. I have no complaints however, I am ignorant of the potential improvement better pickups might provide. I doubt that I need actives because I play finger style only (vestige of pizzacato from my double bass days in the orchestra). There is another BBN5 I am considering ($300.00 eBay) with single coil pickups and like to carry a backup bass to gigs which, at the moment, is an Ibanez 4 string.
10. Does anyone know what hardshell case will fit my Yamaha BBN5? The GB20 is discontinued and I cannot locate one anywhere. Contact has been Made to Yamaha CS asking this very question. Assuming they respond, I may return to answer my own question.
11. Welcome. You will receive as much encouragement from these folks as you could ever possibly require. I have.
12. Welcome. You play whatever instrument you little heart desires. I have played electric pianos, guitars, drums and even a bit of trumpet in bands. Last year I turned 60 and picked up the bass. I am pretty good, play in very good band and am having the time of my life. Cheers
13. Weclome to BassChat and to the league of the Pleasant Clef. My advice is to listen to old MoTown and Leland Sklar, etc. Never forget the the rests are just as powerful as the notes.
14. Welcome, sir. Before you plunk the money down, come here and ask questions. You will receive excellent advice from theese fine folk and will not a find too many gear snobs here. I, myself, play a Yamaha BB5N I paid $100.00 (US) for and an Acoustic B200H with (2) B115 cabs in which I invested a whole $300.00. No one has uttered a dispariging word about it except they cannot get Acoustic in the UK any longer. I did just order an Acoustic B410 cab for $150.00 but it is on backorder until 3/27!!! The good news is my GK BL600 came in and is ready to be picked up. Bought it used for $150.00 also. I am Scots-Irish/Presbyterian and tighter than bark on a tree.
15. LOL Funny stuff Rick. Welcome brutalbass. Do not worry about your English - they let Americans in (like me). I love your avatar from The Muppets Band.
16. Welcome from a fellow Yank (Ohio). My hope is you enjoy and benefit from these forums as much as I have. It is a truly fine group of people.
17. I lierally stumbled across a Gallien Kuger Backline 600 for $150.00. Searching desperately for a perhaps second hand Ampeg. a shopper bot coughed up the GK at, of all places, Guitar Center. Located in Commack, NY, I paid $12.50 to have it shipped to my local GC in Columbus, OH and was nicked $10.00 for sales tax. I am very excited to use it on my next gig and hope that it functions properly so that I will not be disappointed. Next item on my acquisition agenda is either a 2x10 or 4x10 speaker cabinet. There is a GK BLX-II 2x10 currently available on my local Craigs List for $125.00 but I am a bit leary this lower end product. Speak to me o ye who have knowledge to share.
18. Welcome from another American (Ohio). Don't believe what Bass Tractor said about treating us poorly - it ain't so! You will love it here. My only suggestion is to use The Queen's English, spell words with an "S" instead of a "Z" and use as much of the indigenious terminology as you can like kit and bits. To learn this, you could watch every episode of Downton Abbey and Top Gear avaliable. Otherwise, they will notice you are not a Brit and refer to you as "Johnny Foreigner". And don't say "bloody", it's a really bad curse word.
19. Thought you all might be interested to know that I have decided to (most likey) go with the Ampeg PF-350. It is simple. straightforward and can be had for around $250.00 from eBay with free shipping.
20.
I'm out. No idea about US prices.
You don't get off that easy! Current rate of exchange; 1.00 U.S Dollar = 0.63 British Pound Sterling The Promethan looks good except it has no effects loop for my DI-100/Sonic Maximiser.
21. As with most things, the advent of the serial effects loop is probably marketing driven, a "we have this and they don't" sort of thing. After lugging my kit down a flight of stairs to play a private party in someone's home last evening, I have decied to the D class - small & lightwight. Discuss a bit for me the Ampeg, Ibanez Gallien-Kruger. TC Electronics. Kustom and Genz Benz. The last being another prouct with which I am unfamilar. Keep a limited budget in mind, please. I will spend more if worthwhile but, ordinarily, I want to say in the $200 to $300 range.
22.
Effects loops are normally connected in parallel with the clean signal, so you get a blend between the loop and the un-effected signal (and if the effect in the loop fails, you still get sound). To maximise (no pun indended for once) the benefit of your Sonic Maximiser, which is really a serial device, you might want to make sure your effects loop is set to serial. I'm not sure from a quick scan of the manual for your amp whether the effects path is serial or parallel - might be worth a detailed read or a quick email to Acoustic.
Good point and you are right, the manual does not shed much light. However, from a cursory research, I believe that parallel effects loops are relatively new and typically equipped with a "blend" control knob. There is a noticeable difference between running the Sonic Maximiser through the effects loop rather than straight into the input. Kind of makes sense to me but I'm not sure I could explain why.
23.
Sounds awesome too. Thunderfunk amps are made near Cincinnati in Indiana (you have to buy direct) and Bergantino cabs are made near Boston in Maine (they have a dealership list on their website). Or checkout the classifieds on Talkbass.
I grew up in Indiana, now live in Ohio and was just in Cincinnati on business - thanks They are in Seymour which is where John Mellencamp is from.
24.
Having a back up amp is a great idea for any performing bassist though youcan always go through the PA so taking along a Sansamp or something similar would get you out of a hole. It makes sense for a backup amp to be cheap and light so look for one of the newer switch mode amps like the Promethean. There are cheap clones/rebadged versions of this in europe so look for similar in the States. Behringer is built to a budget, so less attention to detail and cheaper components but good design and value. Their PA amps are well respected though and seem fairly robust, I have two, never a problem. The amp part of the heads will be the same so as long as you don't get the last one made on a Fri I wouldn't worry. If I wanted just a backup amp for less than $200 I'd probably buy a used Peavey. Do the job and bomb proof.
"Last one on Friday" hilarious. We play fairs & festivals in season so playing through the PA is no issue but, during the winter months, we play bars and such (paid dress rehearsal). Our PA is barely adequate for vocals (IMO) so running the bass through it is not an option. There is a Promethean (store demo) on ebay as we speak for $259.00 w/free shipping. What say ye all to Ibanez? NVM, just realised it has no effects loop for my Sonic Maximizer. Not a big deal for a backup but not sure it's worth the sacrifice.
25.
I'd sell the lot and get a Thunderfunk TFB750 and 2 Bergantino 112 or 210 cabs. You won't need backups with that rig.
Looks awesome but apparently not available here?
