1. Thanks, good feedback and I appreciate it. Primarily, I just "need" a backup amp as we travel far from home and would not want to be caught with me knickers down. As long as I'm getting. I may as well get an amp with more head room which translates watts - or does it? Pricing here seems to be about a dollar per watt so I may just hold out for an Acoustic B300H. I like the sound I get with my Acoustic rig, Sonic Maximizer and Yami BBN5. Lots of sustain, etc., etc. I cut my teeth playing bass in the left hand on a Wurli through a Fender Showman and this kit sounds familiar. The singer sometimes gets after me to turn up but he is 33 and I am 61 which may explain that IDK. You all have been very helpful as usual. Any more ides?
2. I play through an Acoustic B200H with (2) B115's. I know Acoustic is not available in the UK since Guitar Center acquired it but bear with me. I would like to purchase a backup amp and, if it has more wattage and/or sounds better, move it to the primary role. I can pick up a used Behringer Ultrabass BX450H for $200.00 U.S. or less. I have two questions; 1. Is the Behringer poor quality? 2. Is 450W @ 4 Ohms too much for my B115's which are rated 250W @ 8Ohms? Thank you in advance for your kind consideration
3.
Also IMHO something like an Aphex Bass Xciter or BBE Sonic Maximiser will really thicken your sound up.
I use a DI-100 direct box with built in Sonic Maximizer and the difference is hugeamongous. I run it through the effects loop. Got mine used on eBay for $40.00 US.
4. Welcome. Please do not resist the temptation to participate in the BassChat hive mind at every turn. We will enjoy and and so will you.
5. Welcome. Is 60 too old to refer to as midlife? Very high quality bunch here. There are exceptions but I need not name them as they will reveal themselves soon enough. Unlike the US military, here you are encourged to Do Ask and Do Tell.
6. Excellent response, thank you all. Would it be accurate to state here that this has been an exhaustive or nearly exhaustive listing? Sting and Copeland showed how to play in a trio where less is more.
7. Welcome, sir, very glad to have you as part of these forums.
8. You can find clips from 2011 on youtube
9.
there are more and more 'older' gents picking up music again
I resemble that remark. Picked it up again last year at the age of 60 but first time as the bass player. Played double bass in the school orchestra & jazz band but drums, guitar, keyboard and even a little trumpet in the bands I've been in since the Beatles were on The Ed Sullivan Show. Went bass and love it. Play a Yama BBN5 through an Acoustic B200H & (2) Acoustic B115 cabs in a sometine too loud but very good modern country rock band. But what I really want to say is Welcome. I have little doubt that you will enjoy your participation here as much as I have.
10. Welcome. This is a great place for making friends. Here's hoping you will learn as well as teach . I am tickled that you mention Americana. Have you seen the 2012 Americana Music Honors & Awards programme on the tele? Caught it yesterday on our satellite channel AXS TV followed by the genius of Steve Winwood. Only complaint is Steve didn't use a bass player but Hammond B3 pedals instead. No one's perfect.
11. Welcome, learn, teach and enjoy.
12. I see I need to spend a great deal of time researching some these folks listed here. Thanks a bunch all. One more pairing I will add is Sam Whithrow/Fred Withrow with whom I worked when we lived in Indianapolis. Their playing was like sibling harmony and, unfortunately, they set the bar so high that it is a difficult standard to meet.
13.
Hey! That's protestant whiskey!
You almost always make me laugh or, as the kids say these days LOL. Which whiskey is protestant, Jamesons or Kilbeggin? And what about Glenmorangie? Ever tasted their Quinta Ruban? This may explain my proclivity for these beverages as I am of Scots-Irish descent and presbyterian (more or less).
14. Just a few of my favourites Richard "Pistol" Allen/James Jamerson Jim Keltner/Leland Sklar Roger Hawkins/David Hood Mick Fleetwood/John McVie Richie Hayward/Kenny Gradney Maurice White/Verdine White Emitt Rhodes/Emmit Rhodes
15. I will not apologize for dredging up this old post but did a search to see if he was a member here and found this. Mel works with my son in the music for Central Church in Phoenix. He is as nice as he is gifted. I have asked him to check out basschat with an eye to joining and sharing his experience with us. I expect Brownie Points if he does (pun intended).
16.
...........lol......... Hi mate, thanks for the welcome... Where would drummers be without Bass players to keep them in time.... Ian
Indeed. My drummer ordinarily plays to a click track but I'm OK with the illusion that his time is a perfect as my own.
17.
Now, would Her Majesty think this really is the case, and that above sentence is Her English? Couldn't resist. best, bert
Alas BT, she has issued a restraining order against me so we may never know.
18. Good to hear from you JR. There is no doubt ou will benefit from and enjoy participating in these forums as have I.
19. Welcome. A student of Jamerson - excellent even if you mean the whiskey (although I prefer Kilbeggan). Our stories are similar in that I was on sabbatical until last summer except this is the first time for bass. This is a great site with tons of quality info but, even more importantly to me, tons of quality people.
20. Welcome from the frozen middle of the U.S.A. I too played guitar/keyboards for many years and drums for 10 years before that. Two 2x10 cabs wight be ideal in that you couls split them up when only one may be required for practice of small venues. I am old school (read: old) and prefer the sound of 15's of which I own two 1x15 cabs. My plan is to add a 2x10 so as to be equipped for any situation. With 15's, there is a significant difference between sealed and ported (of which I prefer the former) but I don't know if there is such a distinction with a 2x10. Seems to me a high quality speaker is the more critical component and you will find the folks here at BC are a wealth of information on that topic.
21. I would wish you a warm, sunny welcome from the U.S.A. but it was -13C this morning and I nearly froze to death taking my son to school so I will just say welcome. Try not to encourage BassTractor too much, his physicians do not want him to get overly excited as the meds are no longer effacacious.
22. Welcome Bob. Way, way back in school I wanted to learn to play the saxaphone but was put in the percussion section instead. That lasted through marching season of my Freshman year in high school when I was offered free lessons from our Julliard graduate orchestra teacher to learn double bass. It was a rare opportunity and the experience of a lifetime. Continued to play drums in bands then guitar/keyboards. It took me about 40 years to come to my senses and return to bass. Nobody from this lot has yet tried to talk me out of it but then, they haven't heard me play.
23. Welcome Ian. I was a drummer for (10) years then a keyboard/guitar player but finally worked up the cajones to play a real instrument. Drummers can be useful; you know the stage is level when the drummer drools from both sides.
24. Welcome. Now I forget, is it the Northerners who call everyone a Numpty? Ask you Dad to sign up so we can have a muti-generational claim for these forums.
25. Welcome bassmayhem. In my opinion, your profile adds a considerable amount of class to these forums. My profile also adds much class but, as a Yank, its mostly low class.
