Im not a rock man ..but this is awsome!!!.....forget Flea..this guy blows him away!!!..IMHO..Les's technique is very advanced, and hes sooo funky..ive seen him do some amazing stuff on the bass

Is it me or does he perform a harmonic vibrato..im sure he does, just after 41 seconds..have listen.. hows he doing that????.. i reckon hes shaking the D/G string...at 50 seconds hes got an unstoppable groove...
I still prefer the original version of "The Awakening" by The Reddings...bit surprised that Claypool didn't come up with something composed by himself instead of this cover.

I'm sorry, I'm sure his other stuff is crackin, but what he's doing in that clip is as clever and as musical as being able to roll a cigarette using only one hand.

That film is genius! Thanks to a fellow Basschatter alerting me to it, I got to go and see the film at the Raindance festival in London, complete with introduction and Q&A with Claypool himself!

+1

M
Urb..i dont agree..Les Claypool doesnt play from his ego...this guy sooo does..and it bores me!! IMO.. i feel that guy is just showing off his amazing chops for the sake of it..dont get me wrong hes good..but hes totally missing the point..

I wonder if his band members are wondering why they are holding up his ego..Les is playing for the music..this guy is playing for himself..Les is better than this guy in a musical sense...

Why do people think they can have amazing technique and amaze people..there is more to bass playing than that...Kick Les's butt he sooo doesnt!!!

He doesnt come close..

Les floated my boat from Suck On This onwards until the Brown album where I think his ideas started to dry up a bit. Herb's drumming was hugely integral to the sound of Primus at their best. I've got the live Frizzle Fry DVD, and that is just superb.

As for Les vs Flea, they're really different IMO. Couldnt say who was best but I think they are both very much playing music, it just so happens they do it in a pretty inventive way. Oh and Flea is definitely tighter than Les, but I couldnt say how much that really matters, since Les' feel fits his band poifectly IMO.

Oh and I just taught Plux John The Fisherman (its a family favourite) he's trying to figure out how to sing and play now.....
