Easy Funk basslines

Iā€™d encourage anyone who wanted to learn a bit about funky bass playing to listen to The Meters.

The bass player, George Porter Jr, lays down some terrificallyĀ funky lines. Generally not too taxing to play, (and brilliant to play along to)Ā Georgeā€™s feel for the bass, and his brilliant use of space (i.e. every note counts, and thereā€™s often tons of space between them), for me, make them essential listening.

I wish someone had steered meĀ towards them earlier in my bass playing years!

The verse and chorus sections of Chic's 'Good Times' are pretty straightforwards.

Oooh, I struggle with this one - the short notes, the little spaces, the offbeatness of the whole track.Ā  I need to chop each bar into (I guess) 16th notes, and work out on what subdivision of the beat (1, e, and, a) the notes fall on.Ā Ā

When I play funk, I play all the right rests, but not necessarily of the right length . . .Ā

SHG sampled good times for rappers delight. I think.Ā

Chip Shearin says that Chip Shearin played the bassline.Ā

Nile Rogers says it isn't Chic - 6'44" -Ā

Ā

So, both Chip and Niles say that the Rapper's Delight bassline is a little different to the original.Ā Ā Ā

I have seen a video of Nile Rogers saying that "they got some 17 year old kid to play the bassline in the studio", but I can't find it now.Ā

The bassline was not sampled, but the string section probably was.

Thanks for that cuzzie, I likeĀ that footage fromĀ Soul Train šŸ‘

Yeah itā€™s really cool, Spotify is tuned differently if you use that to play along to, but I thought the videos would be cooler where there is footage
