You've just opened my eyes to a whole new world of jargon and acronyms!

What the hell is seeding a torrent, can anyone do it, and is it considered impolite to do it at the dinner table?
;) I have no idea to be honest... but don't worry, we don't need to know that. All you have to do is here:

- Click on the link: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-...learn-pros.html
- Now you are on the 1st post of that thread.
- You have to download the "Download #1", which has 8 different parts to it. You just click on each link and download them directly from Megaupload.
Only problem here is that Megaupload only allows you to download certain amount daily and, with just the first part, you exceed that amount. What you can do now is to switch off and back on your modem/router after you've downloaded a part... by doing this you'll get a different IP address everytime and you can download as many times as you want.
- You need to download all the 8 parts before trying to extract them. Once you have them all, extract the first part, entering the password provided by the guy, and that's it.
- It's a slow process and it takes time but it's well worth the wait...You have 269 songs!

To open the songs you'll need a software, I'm using Audacity which you can download for free directly their site.

Good luck!

Get Linux. Xarc can extract files from the parts you have downloaded. i.e. I have parts 1 - 4 and got the tracks out of that even though 5 - 8 are still downloading.

Had quite a laugh with them so far. Open in Audacity, mute most of the tracks and jam away. Must have played Livin' On A Prayer a hundred times yesterday - or tried to at least. Bit harder than it looks.

Fascinating as they are, I think this sort of thing would make any musician feel like they were walking naked in the streets of Riyadh. Isolation of something is to reveal its flaws, and people passing judgment on things like tone, timing, errors and erroneous noises outside the context of the whole recording, is a bit weird. Would you isolate the rice from a risotto and tell everyone you think it tastes bland?

+1
It all comes back to either being a Bedroom Superstar, or being part of a BAND. You do what sounds right for the BAND, so you have to learn to compromise your tone, so that it fits in with what everyone else is playing. The sound I use for practising at home is FAR removed from the sound I use on Stage. Just use this facility the way you would use tabs. It helps you find out exactly what the guys were playing on the recording, and you can put your own stamp on it later. :)

If I'm recording my own stuff I definitely listen to it in near isolation - cos I like to know its right.

But thats the advantage of doing things in your own time.

A lot of this is actually recorded to a budget/deadline, so that kind of thing goes out in favour of the right feel and 'did it go ok for you?'

In fact the only time I have heard of people really scrutinising individual tracks in isolation was Stu Hamm being pulled apart when recording for Steve Vai (a bar at a time apparently) - but then Vai was never into groove above precision I guess (and he's clearly a twerp!)

This stuff is fascinating, but seems to miss out on something important, and that is what was done to the raw track during mixdown, ie gating out rubbish, and any other clean up that might have occured.... ....cos these sound like raw raw tracks to me!

Still a great resource, and Flea is seriously tight sounding in Give It Away, superb groove that (wish I'd come up with it!)

Which bass do you guys think he is using on those recordings? Modulus, Stingray?

Awesome tone, I like that added string noise dirtiness he gets.
Wal. Awesome tone too.
I suggested this in the Geddy Lee Isolated Thread, so I'm running with the idea...
I'll list them in bands Alphabetically, and update this first post when more tracks appear.
I think it'd be best to only have the basslines being played by the original artists, either live, or the studio versions.

Anyway, here we go.

The Interpol "Obstacle 1" Bass track is ace , when I heard the bass track I was convinced he was playing a Thunderbird , it just sounded too much like one to not be one. I looked him up on google and found out it is a Jazz bass , I could see it being a P bass but I would never have guessed it was a Jazz in a million years , just goes too show how true it is about the tone being in the player and not the bass.

....sounds like a barking pig!
Thats an excellent bass sound I reckon. Its the sort of sound I try to get on recordings. Overdriven with some mids in the mix.
