Bigwan Posted February 25, 2016 Share Posted February 25, 2016 Purely speculative at this point, but if I wanted to add a second 4 ohm Barefaced retro 2x10, what amps are out there that could handle it? I know I could run the cabs in series for 8 ohms and ANY amp could handle it, but i need real welly here! Talking 500 watts and above. My fav amp of all time is the pre-EVO Ashdown ABM so top of my list of possibilities is the ABM900. Second favorite amp is the Orange Terror Bass, which I've owned twice, and it could handle the cabs in series for 500 watts at 8 ohms (there's also the rarer 1000 watt version that would do 900 watts at 8ohms). [/quote] Just to clarify, you'll need an amp that goes down to 2ohm if you want to use two 4ohm cabs. The vast majority of amps out there will only go to 4ohm through 1x4ohm cab or 2x8ohm cabs. [/quote] Also a good call on EBS, but I'd be interested to know if you're speaking from experience with regards Ashdown or just perpetuating a myth? I've had nothing but good experiences with my ABM. Orange terror and Hartke LH500 can be brand new for less than that. Last ABM900 I saw here was significantly cheaper again. Peavey is a good call, by the way! Bottle Posted February 25, 2016 Share Posted February 25, 2016 Could you not run a pre-power configuration i.e a decent preamp followed by a PA-type power amp, particularly one that could drive 4 Ohms per side? You'd then have independent control of the volume of each cab (if that was desirable?) Alternatively and if you already have a head that can drive 4 Ohms, use the line out or something to run another power amp that can handle 4 Ohms? redbandit599 Posted February 25, 2016 Share Posted February 25, 2016 You could probably get a used EBS HD350 for less than £400 - run at 2ohms and though less than 500w I can't see you having any issues volume wise. I run mine through a 212 and 210 in a rock band with two guitarists, I don't go into the PA and they do and rarely do I turn up past 10 o'clock. Connect to the line out on your amp. Get one that can be bridged and it will drive the additional cab on its own. Cheap, too - I just picked up a Crown XLS 202 for £40 on the Bay. I used to run mine one per channel on my Ashdown LG1000. As they were obsolete, I was looking for another one second hand as a backup but couldn't find one. Merton and Eude of this parish pointed me to the Carvin and I couldn't be happier. I think it was a bit closer to £600 with delivery EDIT: I've just checked and it was £500 with delivery! It has a little switch on the back for selecting 2 or 4 ohm modes if you're like me and sometimes only use one cab. It is worth noting that Molan from Bass Gear told me they were giving up Carvin distribution when I bought mine, so not sure who is doing it in the UK now. I would doubt I'd go for the Carvin I'm afraid. It may be on a level with anything else out there, but it's a case of better the devil you know. If I could get an Orange TB500/1000 or Ashdown ABM900 for the same (or less) money previous experience tells me I'd be happy with them, so the Carvin wouldn't get a look in!
