The 'Show us your Limelight!' thread

The bass arrived yesterday but I only got to unbox it today. It is a very lovely thing indeed and really growls (I didn't understand what people meant by that until this afternoon) even at house volume. Couldn't get any better pics than the ones from Mark a few posts up, but I'm a happy boy :)

Finally the '62 Shoreline Gold Precision moved in with me. :)

First impressions:

It's quite well made. The neck is superb: look and finish are perfect, the rolled fingerboard edges make it feel very comfortable. The feel of the neck is much more authentic than the feel of the body. The body finish looks nice, the colour is spot on, but it doesn't feel like an old Fender. Compared to my beloved 1965 Precision, the Limelight is a little heavier (didn't weigh it yet) and the neck profile is thicker, more like a 50's than a 60's neck profile. Chunky, but still comfortable to play.

The tone is massive. Fundamental low end, punch and sustain. It doesn't have the 1965's bouquet of overtones (I guess there is a difference between a new instrument and one that's been played for 50 years). But still the Limelight is not that far below the 1965 Fender. It's just that its tone is more based on the lows, whereas the 1965's tone is based on the vivid mids and overtones. They both sound great in their own ways.

And since this is the gear porn section, I promise to take a couple of nice pictures this afternoon and post them here. ;)

Very nice indeed. The triangular thumb-wear pattern above the E string to the right of the pickguard (as seen from playing POV) and the 'broken' pickguard tip seems to be Limelight trademarks. :)

Right,I want in on this. Now, Shoreline Gold as seen and admired above,LPB, Pino clone or other?! With a rosewood board are there any other slightly more unusual colours worth considering?

Jade Pearl Metallic? It'd look nice alongside your TKS cabs :-)

Very nice, I had to google that one, but did have a Strat that colour a few years back! Will Mark do pretty much any colour?!

Give him a message and see what he says, when I asked pre-new year, he wasn't able to offer a 3TS finish, though that might have changed now, other than that he pretty much said name a colour and he'll tell me if it was doable!

I can't see why he couldn't do JPM if he can do burgundy mist, shoreline gold, LPB, CAR etc as it's the same process but with a different top colour.

You could always ask him direct and cut out the middle man?
Yes indeed - Mark is usually very helpful, and will reply pretty promptly in my experience

Limelight Jazz owners, I need your help!! Does anyone know if the bodies Mark uses are 60s or 70s position pickup routs?
Having been through every pic here and on Mark's site, I don't recall seeing a single 70s-style jazz body. That doesn't mean he can't do you/source you one though! Shout him is your best bet - he was willing to do a '51 p bass when I asked!

...there's something about Shoreline Gold that is just magical.

You're right... it resonates with something from my youth... what could it be??

OK... to help me decide...

Would those of you with maple-board Limelight P's mind posting pics that clearly show the board, preferably in daylight?

One of my dilemmas is the old maple / rosewood thing. I think I prefer the look of Limelight's rosewood, but I'm not sure...
You can ask him to leave the maple board more standard if you like. On my jazz I asked him to leave it brighter because I thought the darker neck wouldn't look great with the colours I chose. It came out just right for what I wanted.
