How good is he ?? Well .... good enough that The Nightfly would be amongst the half dozen or so CD's I'd buy on the day the insurance cheque landed after my house had burned down. Apart from the great songs , the effortless fusion of jazz influence into pop , and the concept of a young man's hopes, dreams and experiences , the album is a who's who of top US session bass players. It should be essential homework for anyone who visits this site. I might add that Mr F is a master of a craft I've fought tooth and nail to master all my life. The ability to use your bland and limited singing voice and work with it to the greatest advantage. Bandana , Ushanka , scooter helmet , beany hat that my wife knitted me and Afrika Corps cap all well and truly doffed.

He's very formulaic: witty acerbic lyrics, trade mark keyboards and horns, noodley guitar and jazz/blues chord structures but for me there's not much out there I'd rather listen too for much of the time. As for "Repetitive rhythm": ain't that just the riff? Different strokes and all that...

Incidentally when I went for my £350,00 Hi-Fi playback ( see other thread) the guy there saw the DF Sunken Condos and thanked me for not bringing Nightfly as he'd heard it so many times when brought in by punters to listen to.

He was better in the 70s. All the Dan (post 1977) and solo stuff (with the exception of Kamakiriad - his best solo work imo) sounds too controlled and a bit lifeless personally.

Lack of vibrancy and general spark

!!! The Nightfly is a masterpiece!

Vibrancy and Spark? Listen to 'Walk between the Raindrops'!

Anywho, here he is speaking about another classic:

[/quote]Walking Between the RainDrops is a real favourite of mine. what a great vid. amazing to watch a magician of music, dissect how he created such a masterpiece of a record chord by chord. he does find something different and interesting in every chord
