Too many great basslines.... started going through my old collection, hearing a lot I didn't listen to first time round - getting new inspirations. :)
Though I can't think of one being being best ever.

A few more suggestions:
'Kowalski' - Primal Scream
'Same Old Scene' - Roxy Music
'24 Hour Party People' - Happy Mondays
'Funeral Pyre' - The Jam
'Radio Babylon' - Meat Beat Manifesto
'Same Old Scene' - Roxy Music is utterly fantastic

On the subject of two those bassists, have you heard of Freebass - a side project with Hooky, Mani & Andy Rourke?
They should have some material out soon, looking forward to hearing it. Don't think I've ever heard songs with three basses before! :)
Hope it's better than Hooky's Revenge project. That sucked

Revenge did suck bigtime!
Monaco at least were better, I suppose.

There's a Freebass track on Hooky's myspace

For me, jury's still out - until I hear more.

Speaking of Herbie Flowers, I thought of another one this morning: Jeff Wayne's masterpiece 'War Of The Worlds', specifically the Horsell Common/Heat-ray theme (the bit where the bass fades in gradually as the cylinder is unscrewing). It's just 12 picked notes repeated, but the sheer menace it conveys... perfect.

great suggestions above, and I wont repeat them. I am a fan of Bernard Edwards, and would champion For Once In My Life too.

I would also throw in Dancing Queen. A hugely impressive masterclass in musical bass playing which flows and bounces along with nuances and a great "rubbery" feel. Brilliant.

Black Jack Davy by Steeleye Span- the bass at the beginning just sings, simple but amazing.
Lazarus or Butterfly McQueen by the Boo Radleys- both have the combination of beach boys harmony pop and deep dubby drive perfectly balanced. Lazarus may be one of the greatest songs ever written, but you need to hear the album version with the long dub intro...

+1 to Wonderstuff, Senseless Things and Stone Roses. I'd add "I Wanna Be Adored" to the essential list from the latter.

Pineapple Head by Crowded House. The way the bass dances with the mandolin and guitar is tremendous.

Anyone know of a tab for this? as I'm a very, very lazy person. The original was on Moog synth, but Marcus Miller did a version.

You've just gotta love 'hit me with your rhythm stick' by ian dury and the blockheads.

Anything by The Jam.

Holiday in cambodia by Dead Kennedys.

Neat neat neat by The Damned.

Some of the bass lines on the 12" singles by Duran Duran i thought were particularly good!

Hysteria by Muse.

nope you are all wrong :)

Hands down the best bass line ever is Earthquake by Graham Central Station, played by the one and only Larry.

You want the funk? Damn it's funky!
You want the rock? Man it ROCKS!
You want slap? It's Larry baby!

Have a listen and you will fall in love with the bass all over again...
