1. If I need volume during practice, I find Boot's travel earplugs work pretty well. I love the ER-20s though.
Everyone here must have a few lil widdles that they always play on a bass. Maybe it's what you sound check with? Maybe it's what you play when you are trying a bass in a shop? Whatever it is, everyone has a few of their favourite noodles. Tab them or record them and we can all exchange cool lil noodles!! I shall stick mine up here this evenin!
I kinda have an alternate picking excersise I use to warm up, it's just 12/11/10 on all 5 strings, alternating the fingers and descending / ascending. Mostly to discipline my fingers into independance. XD
3. Hmmm... I really like the bass in Days Turn Blue To Gray by Machine Head. Always thought it was a funky guitar effect starting the song until I saw 'em live.
4. I've wanted to play for years but it was hearing songs like YYZ, Metropolis Part One, The Light That Blinds and Dig that made me really want to go out and finally start learning.
5. Sorry to sound like a plonk, but how would one go about changing strings? I have to admit, I failed to ask that when I bought it. *feels silly*
6. I'd say underrated only because I practically never hear anything about him compared to the other two. Saying that, Dom Howard is by the same token a really underrated drummer.
7.
use your left hand as well. You should have a spare finger tip to mute with...
Ah, cheers mate, I'll start working on that as well sometime. =]
8. Adam Duce, Jon Miller, Jeanne Sagan, Paul Pomanko, William Murderface, Chris Wolstenholme... they get my vote.
9. I bought it in Dorchester. I'll ask Ben in my WoW guild, he's a five minute drive away, he'll probably know. But the head turns ok, it just sounds a bit hacked off. Maybe it needs some lube?
10. So... I go to tune my big pile of bass tonight. And as I tune the A string, anytime I move the machine head there's like a little mechanical squeaking sound, like nng-nng-nng as if it's protesting. What can I do? I've only owned this bass 3 weeks now.
11. So how would you go about muting a note on the A string, say the music says x 7 x 8 on a tab sheet? Something that I'm kind of trying to figure out at the moomin.
12. I know rhythmic measures of notes, but I'm poor on actual note-reading. I know that the fat little bum who sits down a way and has a line through him is C, though. XD I can't read 'chord charts', I should add. They confuse the hell out of me.

Hihi!

Aw man, I caught Dream Theater at Download... There's one of the big reasons I wanted to take up bass, as well as watching some mates play YYZ on Guitar Hero II... It's all well and good having something that widdles but low end is where it's really at.

Hihi!

In terms of what I listen to, not really meself... I've never really enjoyed anything more than a good mosh fest!

Hihi!

I don't think I remember them... We were the only heavy band playing the bill really - played The Trooper, then Symphony of Destruction, then Master of Puppets... Ah, they were the days. What sort of stuff do you play? I'm still debating fingering or plectrum playing at the moment...

Hihi!

Hmmm, only thing I can think of is we played Budstock 2006 and I ended up with about 5 13 year old stalkers 'cause I took my top off mid-set. Oh poop. And thanks, I'll probably need all the luck I can get! XD

Hihi!

I'm off to portsmouth uni on thursday, yay! Hmmm, did you go to Budmouth school? Perchance you know a bassist by the name of Ben? Or maybe the eponymous, evil Hoof?

Hihi!

I used to play drums in a band called Power Volt, if you know a bass player called Mike Deacon, he was ours at the time! We didn't play out live much, though. You at the college at the moment or anything? Arrr, those were the days.

Hihi!
You're drumming will only make you stronger. A couple on here methinks, excellent sense of rhythm and timing. Anywho, welcome to Basschat!
Oooh, from Weymouth as well you are eh? Big up the Dorset. XD Do you play in any local bands?
20. Maybe you could do stuff like mirroring higher melodies, or adding melodies of your own when it's appropriate, or perhaps a counterpoint to a guitar melody?
21. I don't know if you'd find it much fun because it's pretty simple, but 'Descend The Shades Of Night' by Machine Head is in B, one of the nice simple tunes I've been using to learn for the moment.
22. Now, I won't lie here, despite being new I bought myself a 5-string, mostly because when I get there a lot of stuff I listen to and want to play someday is in B, and as a student-again-in-a-week a new bass midway through my course wouldn't be feasable. I know very little music theory such as notation, so I generally use tab. If I wish to learn a piece in C or D, which frets would serve as 'D0' say, on my B string? I would guess either three or four? Thanks guys, M

Hihi!

Harro thar! Total beginner here, had my bass about two weeks now and am looking to focus on it as my main instrument, having finally decided to take a long break from the drums after 5 full years of non-improvement. So yah, I shall be looking to get a lot better on the beast of linguine!
