I'd love it to be a hoax, but if it's a hack then they're hacking a lot of sites, including the "Where's Eric" website I linked to above.

CNN are reporting it now: http://edition.cnn.c...obit/?hpt=hp_t3

Edit: and now the Daily Mirror: http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/going-out/music/j-j-cale-dead-74-2095658

Plus, it reportedly happened yesterday, so plenty of time for someone to have officially confimed the hoax by now - JJ's people themselves perhaps?

Spooky thing is, I was practising After Midnight this afternoon because we're going to play it in my new band. I played Naturally virtually non-stop back in the 70s and it's still one of my all-time favourite albums. Cool, laid-back, less-is-more swamp-rock. Love it. I have 4 of his albums in my car including Road to Escondido where he co-operated with Clapton but, for me, it's not as good as Naturally or Troubadour. On Road to Escondido, my personal feeling is that Cale's understated style doesn't mix too well with Clapton's more florid sound and there's a nagging non-meeting of minds throughout the album. Cale couldn't sing all that well, but for me, that added a straightforwardness to his songs. For those people who haven't heard too much about JJ Cale, Here's After Midnight: Genuinely sad to hear of his death.

Agree about the Naturally album, a favourite along with Shades, off which I used to spend house practicing walking bass to 'Pack My Jack'.

One of the bands I'm in play 'Call Me The Breeze' in a sort of JJ Cale style, and it's amazing how many people only know the rockier Lynyrd Skynrd version.

he was laid back, he did what he wanted and he wasn't interested in fame. What a great guy.

Yep. In my wildest dreams of musical fame and fortune, JJ Cale would be what I'd wish for - a lifetime of playing music just how I wanted, the respect of my peers and none of that celebrity nonsense.

Agreed.
Sad news indeed, JJ Cale was a big part of my musical diet when growing up.
Thanks for all the great songs .
