Ok all, I've been using a trace elliot rig which is excellent but a right pain in the jacksy to cart about and store.
What recommendations does everyone have for a good loud, not too large set up on a budget (£500ish)? I know theres a thread about light cabs but i was also wondering about combos as well as rig set ups.
Needs to fit easily into a car for gigs

Bear in mind theres 4 bassists in my band so it needs to chuck out some filth!

Over to you mob.

200 watts probably wont cut it live.

I have a GK 212MBE cab in the classifieds - buy that and add a Hartke LH500 new or 2nd hand Genz, GK, Hartke 3500 and you should have a decent rig with change left to put towards a second 8 ohm cab later.

I've just looked at a mcgregor bass mate 500w combo, £549 which seems good price but I don't know much about mcgregor amps.
Anyone used one or heard anything about them?
Cheers all, appreciate all the help.

4, check that, 4!!!! Bassists in your band?
All playing at the same time?
Intrigued, any links to your sounds?
Go barefaced & be louder than the other 3!

I wouldn't bother with it.
Its an unknown quantity (I remember them in the 80's and they weren't much cop then), you'll struggle to shift it if you don't get on with it and a single combo is never as loud as a couple of cabs and a head - you don't get the spread which will be perceived as volume.
Go second hand from the Basschat classifieds - theyre a good bunch of bods in general and you'll get much more for your money than buying new.

If you're looking for new gear then the Carvin micro combos are good and surprisingly loud. The 2x10 and 1x15 have enough volume for smaller gigs but you'll need an extension cab to cut through against a loud drummer or multiple other guitars that are cranked.

The big plus point on these is that they are made in the US with quality components and are much more reliable and well built than a lot of the shoddy Chinese made stuff out there.

GAK have some amazing deals from time to time, so don't discount something (see what I did there?) purely due to its cost. What is the RRP on one of these? GK gear is very well put together and has lots of fans (although I've never used any myself). Sounds like a good deal, and then add Mudpup's 212 cab as an extension!

We all try to out loud each other anyway. None more Tap!!!!
Am considering using a guitar combo instead, I play stuff in the top end of the range so a guitar amp might suit.
If not I'm going to lash out on HP and get a MarkBass 2x10 set up i think.

For hard, defined, no holds barred sound, with enough volume to kill, I think Markbass has it in spades. I've had an LM II, and an F1, and IMHO the F1 will punch a hole right through your bandmates.

"Loud" depends on the size of the venue, which you don't mention.

Since you mention combos, I'll recommend the Markbass CMD121p which you'll pick up on here for about £450 if you keep your eyes peeled.

It wouldn't be "loud" if you were to play Wembley though :-)
