Hi all

Just a quick note to say hello. I recently became the editor of Bass Guitar Magazine and have been reading the posts here about the magazine with interest. I've noticed a few complaints about the content and some queries about why we do certain things, so I thought I'd better post here and if you have any questions, you can put them to me directly.

Thanks to Bass Chat for letting me do this, it's an amazing forum.

Cheers

Hey! I was actually up for that gig back in the mid-late '90s...but wouldn't move from NY to CA.

Congrats!

You mean Bass Player magazine I imagine. Unless you wouldn't move from North Yorkshire to County Antrim or something.

It's a shame that Joel hasn't come on here with his viewpoint at this moment in time. From what I've seen from his posts on here, he seems a decent enough bloke willing to hold his hands up if something has gone a bit pear shaped with the mag. Maybe the foul up was at the printers as has been mentioned previously?

The double Fender ABG feature aside, I thought this months copy was a good read, but have started getting a bit bored with reading about bass players who don't use a particular technique or a 4/5/6 string bass. That definitely needs to be binned - I'd rather have those pages devoted to another interview devoted to a particular bass player (any genre, don't care which), which would be far more useful.

In a similar vein, does anyone bother with the Bass USA page? Surely we need to know who's touring in the UK, unless it's to pander for a few US bassnerds?

It's divisive. We live on one f***ing planet, let's just have bass regardless of where it is. That page also comes across as sycophantic.

I see the Diamond Bass Comp reviewed this month was grossly swollen in size and weight from the one I've tried (and been so impressed with).

Also surprised to see that the Canadian manufacturers have moved production to the USA and that astinishingly this move has significantly reduced the price.

Not only that but they've added four new controllable knobs and other features as well.

Meanwhile the Aphex Bass Exciter has dramatically shrunk in size and weight whilst swapping country of manufacture from USA to Canada and an increase in price.

Despite this price increase it seems they've reduced the number of controllable knobs.

One would almost think the complete feature set as shown in the technical specification right at the top of each page for each pedal had been somehow swapped around but, as they are such different pedals, I'm sure this can't possibly be the case. . . ?

I must admit I was quite impressed to discover that the usually intelligent, erudite and eminently sensible Yolanda Charles owns the only example of a Fender Jazz that was built before Leo himself even thought about making it.

" I also play a Fender Jazz 55, which is is lovely but I don't use it so much these days"

This was such a major piece of news that it was not only in the body copy but also highlighted in bold text as a headline on one page.

Of course, I'm really not surprised, after all, this must be a very unique instrument given that it pre-dates any other known example of a Fender Jazz by at least 4 years (5 officially but Herbie Flowers possibly owns a 'pre-production '59).

No wonder she doesn't take it out to play much it must be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. . .

I don't know, but when the editor tries to sell me on bass being "as essential to a fulfilling life as food, water and beer", it has me wondering if there are a few too many scoops at lunchtimes and not enough writing and/or checking of copy in the afternoons.

In all seriousness, I've seen magazines of this ilk before, where the people involved are more interested in running around, going to press launches and parties, and not sufficiently interested in doing the research or writing necessary to produce a good product. They wither on the vine and die, with the usual excuses of "we never had enough time to bed an issue", or "we didn't have a big enough design budget", or "we couldn't afford to pay a fact-checker", or "we were continually let down by our parent company/marketing department/subscriptions/printer/distributor".

Very true and a wise analysis.

Though I don't imagine that the BGM guys get to go to the sort of 'industry parties' where the champagne magnums go pop and oiled Brazilian transexuals ram industrial quantities of primo grade charlie up the guests' noses.

I used to buy the mag religiously, but in the last few months I don't even bother picking the magazine up to flick through anymore.

The format has become stagnant (I don't slap or play 5 string ring any bells ?) and a revamp in content is desperately needed to refresh things. I feel that the content template has just been carried on from the previous editor. The page formatting and design has changed, but i'm unsure if this is positive.

Whilst it may be easier for the reviewers to get high end basses in from certain specialist shops, it is terribly skewed towards the high end market. I am sick of reading about a £3000 bass I will never buy, who will ? Maybe 1 person who buys the magazine ? Worth it for the shop/manufacturer that sent the bass for review, but not the magazine.

I think a move towards backing up their reviews with online content (video sound samples etc) would be highely beneficial.

If it is a case that there isn't enough demand from bassists for this magazine to evolve or infact die out entirely, then it would be a sad loss, but no great surprise.
