A nicer category might be "accomplished", meaning if you hire me for the job then I expect I'll be able to do what you want. But given the choice between "intermediate" and "expert", then IMO it's reasonable for an accomplished player to describe themselves as expert. KuzBass Posted May 22, 2012 Share Posted May 22, 2012 Although I play bass for 20+ years (with couple of breaks) and I had a bit of education in the other instrument in my childhood, I always feel I am an amateur. Studying music may never be accomplished (not to be messed up with training, f. e. classic) as the length of this process may take the eternity. IMHO of course. Knock out simple lines with conviction and presence, good enough for my band and good enough for me. To make a comparison, though - I used to train in and teach several different martial arts. Our training group would teach to folks from all walks of life, often being in demand to travel long distances. I've lead seminars teaching unarmed and weapon arts to police and military personnel. Even by the standards of other martial artists, in my specialist fields I'd be considered an 'expert' Doesn't mean I didn't recognise my Master's absolute light years of superiority as a practitioner, teacher and human being though. His own stories of how his teacher made him feel humble in the presence of greatness are exactly how I feel. Point is, I was still really bloody good at what I did and although modestly recognising that there are those who are far greater, it would be unrealistic not to accurately know my own skill level. As we used to teach to students - "knowing how good you are at something gives you the confidence to make yourself even better" I suspect some of the modest posters above are actually at 'expert' level of bassistry Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

[/quote] This is true, it can really depend on the context in which you have to describe yourself. Although only an amateur actor I have an acting CV that makes me sound like Dame Judi Dench. And under 'special skills' (the heading where luvvies tend to list fencing, horseriding etc) I have had the nerve to put 'Bass Guitar - Intermediate and Drums - Beginner. Meaning I know a couple of notes on bass and once looked at a drum kit!! But you do have to big yourself up a bit sometimes. The trick is to do it without looking like a pretentious tw*t. Lozz196 Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I think NickH has got it fairly accurate here - we are all probably a tad better than we think we are, but equally, because we know our both our abilities, and limits, we are all happy to state there is more that we are able to learn - therefore not wanting to overstate ourselves. The only "expert" I`ve ever met was a guy who`d never played bass in a band, but told me "he could take me in a bass-off". My response was to ask him how many drummers enjoyed playing with him, because his playing was tight, and didn`t get in the way, could he record a bassline on his own, some 4 or 5 times, and be within a couple of seconds each time (at max). Could he play a single note bassline with feeling and groove. No comprehension of what I was on about. Expert - don`t want to be in that club!
