I'd have been completely screwed... who the hell is Rob Trujillo?

All this competitive stuff is a mystery to me, but I won't be watching the Olympic Games either so that's probably just me :-)
Here you go, Rob Trujillo

I normally run a mile to avoid bass solos but between the mad-man look of the guy and the outrageous tone that made me smile :)

He's great, such a character too. Here's an older song from his Infectious Grooves days, nothing flashy on this one:
I used to think faster/flashier = better. My favourite Metallica bassist is probably Jason Newsted now because he supports the song, has a great tone, and great stage presence. When I was a teenager I didn't rate him quite as highly!
but is invisible in the mix on the records.... :)
Justice has no bass....

I'm not a huge Metallica fan but i think Jason Newsted got some unfair stick with regards to his playing just because he wasn't as "out there" as Burton or Trujillo.

Yep on that album he was criminally low in the mix! Heard a few versions ripped from guitar hero where theyd turned him up and the whole thing sounded mind-blowing. Have a look for em on YouTube!

It'd have to be Cliff for me as a preference, simple because of his originality at the time (mid '80s) and his central role in the band's early success.

But Rob T is a great bass player too. I've been following him since his days in Suicidal Tendencies. Nice bloke by all accounts; he helped to restore one of Jaco's basses and return it to the Pastorius family.

I'm not such a fan of Jason, but I do have one of his plectrums at home (somewhere?!) if any fans here are interested in paying ca$h for it :)

As an aside - if anyone's interested - I actually have a 'remix' of Cliff Burton's classic bass solo on SoundCloud. Most of you will hate it for being an unmusical wall of noise... the rest of you will hate it for being a sacrilegious reworking of a classic! Those remaining might just like it... (hi mom!):

So am I the only one who thinks Rob shits on all of them... of course he doesn't get to in Metallica like... but everything outside of it he's a monster. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have got the gig if he wasn't.

Obviously I look back at Cliff with fondness because he's of my generation and from a time when I actually was into the band but as for being technically the best..... ? Catch him on a good day (before his first hit) then maybe.

No you're definitely not alone there, given the choice of which i'd rather listen to i'd pick Trujillo every time!

I didn't really rate Jason when I was younger, mainly as you couldn't really hear him... now I know it was a deliberate decision by the other members of Metallica, I'm left wondering. You can't watch Some Kind Of Monster and not think the rest of the band are pure dickheads, Hetfield leading the curve on that one, and that Jason had a point in getting out. The Justice For Jason stuff on Youtube is very good, and he works well with the songs.

Cliff I like, but am not wondering if it's just some sentimentality in there.

Rob is good, just not my cup of tea. We're all on here banging on about posture and he looks like he's squatting for a sh*t every time he gets on stage... just adds some comic appeal. He's probably the best of the three players, mind :)
