Most of Cliff Williams' career has been spent following the root.

Boring?

Nah. Same goes for Alan Lancaster & a fair swedge of Roger Glover.

The rest of the band can rock, but only we can make it roll.

Roger Glover mainly root notes? you're kidding right?

In American Idiot, I have an insane, irresistable urge to do a cheesey country & western style walk up to the D in the middle of the chorus. I can usually hold out till the guitar break, then I just have to let it go. Probably irritates our guitarist, but he never says. Actually more likely never notices.

The Ramones version of What A Wonderful World is a driving 8th note root bass line, best played with a pick. That was the last time I came across such a song, to play at least. It is an exercise in restraint and aiming to get all the notes played with a consistant feel.
