I think I might go for one of these red ones, fit a black bridge and tuners, and add coil taps (which might need new pickups, not sure)...
Exactly what I was thinking. Need a source for cheap black Hipshot Rick bridges!

I should really have posted this in here in the first place.

"Update.

I've just picked the RV4 Rickenfaker up from a service. The E string was rattling a bit behind the fret so I guessed (correctly) that the nut was cut slightly too low on the bass side.
They've put in a tiny ebony wedge under the nut that has sorted this completely. Also done were a truss rod tweak, fret dress, all pots, switches and jack upgraded, copper shielding of the cavity and interestingly the neck tone control changed to a variable coil tap.
It really has completely upped the performance of the bass in every way. I'm chuffed to bits. The action is now fast and low.
There were four Ric's in the shop. Two 4001's and two 4003's and the tech said it blew them all away in playability. He was very impressed with it. Hence him doing lots of extra stuff to it that I didn't ask for at no cost! It still sounds more like a turbo charged precision and nothing like a Ric though which is OK by me. The variable coil tap on the neck is great though gives it far too many useable sounds for a bonehead like me.

I'm going to give it another gig outing on Saturday"

Hello Ad,

Have you got a link to the fella that services you basses and doe he do mods?? I've got a Tokai Rockinbetter that I had put Riki pups and electrics in only to find (annoyingly after I spent a small fortune on Riki parts) when I got the Retrovibe I prefered the tone on that! Now my plan is to put in some MM style pups in the Tokai ...

I'm still very impressed with the Retrovibe. I took it to rehearsals with my Joy Divison tribute and it really did the job... nice and twangy on the high end stuff and nice a bit of growl .....

COME ON THE BEE'S
I spoke to David at Probass and he's hoping to have a 5 string version of the RV4 sometime in April. I've put my name down for one :)
Sweet, I may have to do the same. Hope there's even more colour choices too!

I see Andertons are offering a bass collection rick copy
This appears to be the exact same bass as the Rockinbetter copy, which is considerably cheaper.

Retrovibe FTW though - I do like these... :)

I'll probably get a mouthful back for saying this, but the Retrovibe Ricky body shape is nothing like a Ricky 4001/3. It's all wrong and upsets my eye. There is something very beautiful about the Ricky shape, but these are nothing like it. I'll have to do a straight comparison with some some similar pics but I would bet money it starts from the lower bout and around the back of the bridge. It's too bulbous and lacks the Rickenbacker beauty.

See what I mean? The lack of a Rick style bridge makes it even worse. Picky bastard aren't I :)

Mine is beautiful. If you're very nice I'll let you touch it. Bulbous bit and all.. :)

PS

Used mine at our last gig on the 29th Jan. The sound man who was also a bass player has now ordered one. It sounded fantastic.
I may have to sort a Jeff Beck style forearm chamfer for comfort though.
