I've net been there for a while but I remember it being a great little shop, I used to call in regularly. I've bought a couple of basses from there many years ago, a Aria SB1000 and a 1979 Precision. Both were reasonably priced. He's had some pretty good second hand amps as well. I drove through Newtown a couple of months ago and I was delighted to see that the shop was still there as the owner is a really nice bloke. I hope he's doing well.

Back in 1988 I paid £90 for my first bass, a Westone Thunder Jet. God knows how I got that much money together, I didn't even have a paper round! Also, we had one of these Thunder 1's in the school music room and as the only 'bass player' I had first dibs on it. Happy days. If I had a spare ton I'd have this 😍

Oh, I never realised you lived 'round our way! 😂 -
Bought Dave's Markbass cab. Went to the trouble of sending it by courier as it was way too far to collect. Really appreciate it! Top bloke, excellent communications and didn't hang around shipping it. Cheers! Paul

I had one of these amps. I'm certainly no expert when it comes to electronics but I can remember how 'old school' it looked inside. Nothing like modern amps. I'd find it really hard to believe that it couldn't be repaired. The OP says he can't find anybody in the north west to look at it. I know a guy down in Telford who used to service and fix my amps. I've not seen him for a good while now bit I'm pretty sure he'd be able to sort it.

Thomann have a B-stock Tribute for £380, it would be very tempting if I weren't skint. If they (and they will be) are as good as my JB-2 Tribby it will be a fantastic bass. It's certainly on my wish list. I've had a US L2000, L2000 Tribute, M2000 Tribute, and my current JB-2. All excellent basses.

I just bought a set of Black Beauties from the US, I used them many moons ago and liked them so I thought I'd give them a whirl on my Thumb bass. But my preferred string is the Lo-Rider and as mentioned above they're a great price on Amazon. I'll be ordering a set pretty soon.

I'm pretty sure that the prices will come down in line with the 2x12. I really fancy trying one myself now.... You're right, it never ends!
-
Theres a used 2x10 on ebay thats not too far from you.

Nice bass but I'd have to change that knob.

Douglas is a top guy, a real credit to the forum. Bought my fretless Mayones who went above and beyond to ensure a perfect transaction. Thanks Douglas, 5 stars from me also.

I was just looking at Thomann! Excellent advice, thank you.

Thanks. And a good price too!

I don't have a picture at the moment but yes it has the Jazz pickups. What pickups would you recommend with the Glockenklang preamp?

I think the East option is a bit over budget for me. I've had a bass with one in and yeah, they are very good. I don't mind paying up to £150. Ive been looking on BassDirects site where there's a good selection. Barts, Nordstrand, Augilar and Glockenklang all within my budget. Will these preamps work with the Yamaha pickups or will they need changing?

A good while back I bought an old MiJ series 1 Yamaha TRB4 with the intention to get back into playing in bands. Anyhow that never transpired and the bass was left in its gig bag and pretty much forgotten about. It was weeks after that I dug it out and started playing it. I put new strings on, set it up. After playing it though a good amp I realised that, well, it wasn't that good to be honest. I was told that the preamp has a mid frequency select on the circuit board so I unscrewed the back plate to have a nose. It was pretty obvious the the Yammy preamp had been replaced with a pretty cheap and basic one. So back in the gig bag it went and pretty much forgotten about again.... I think its about time I did something with what is a really nice bass. So, what preamp would be suitable or you'd recommend? Would it be best to replace the Yamaha pups as well? The controls are: Volume, Blend and a 3 band eq. Nothing stacked, no push/pull. 5 knobs in all! I have never replaced any hardware like this before so I really don't have a clue!

'One of us' is probably my favourite play along ABBA songs followed by Gimme (x3). Bloody good stuff IMO.

Up for grabs is my Fame fretless. Selling to fund new amp gear. Now, I really don't know much about these basses. Some googling tells me that its a Fame Baphomet, handmade in Poland. Its VERY Warwick like with the curved body, same pickups and pre by the look of things. The body is just stunning, according to google the wood is amazaque. Neck is slim and fast and to me very comfortable. It feels more like an older Warwick than the newer ones. Fingerboard is ebony and unlined. Controls are Active/Passive (pull for passive), blend, and stacked bass/treble. New 9v battery just fitted. I love playing it although I'm no great fretless player. I bought it on a whim off ebay just because it looked so good and with great specification. Condition is excellent, there are a couple of tiny marks on it if you look very closely, my phone camera can't pick them up, the fingerboard has the usual marks from round wound strings. Collection only from St. Helens (Merseyside). I don't have a hard case for it, just a gig bag. I will not trust to couriers. I could meet up if not too far and no trade offers please. PayPal gift ok
