Definitly the right way to shoot a band. I can't believe people use flash at gigs. Pointless and if anything it desstroys the atmosphere.
Couldn't agree more; all my best gig shots are without flash, a nice fast lens, probably prime but not essential can really make the stage lights work. Watching the Olympic ceremonies with flashes going off in the Gods & most of them will wonder how come they've got cracking pics of the back of the head of someone sat in front of them. Not wanting to turn this into an OT topic; this is one of my faves, but Dave always did love having a camera pointed at him. Looking forward to seeing any future BCer gig pics coming up in this topic.

Now that looks near identical to the stuff that's in my hi-fi speakers!! Many thanks.

Thanks for all the answers, yeah, that "egg box" foam is sold at the local place; it's quite firm which I thought would suit the purpose better. Both cabs are ported, the Hiwatt with a rear slot & the Marshall with front round ports.

After reading quite a lot recently about the use of stuffing in bass cabs I'm thinking of using some in my cabs; the hesitation has been that I kinda assumed that main manufacturers such as Hiwatt and Marshall would have put it in if they thought it was needed; I doubt they would have skimped on cost. Or - was it that it wasn't thought of at the time? I know there's a lot of smoke, mirrors & pseudo-science involved - or CAN be involved sometimes - but since it's a low cost option I'm seriously thinking of doing it. Cabs involved are a Hiwatt Hylight 4122, guitar & bass 4 x 12 with original Fanes and a Marshall JCM 2 x 15" with Eminence Deltas. What I really don't want - and would it remove immediately, would be if the cabs lost any of their top end. My custom bass has massive range - and is toppy (which I like). So if any of that top was muffled out by the foam it would be right out of there. However, if it shows the Hiwatt head off at it's best it would be ideal for demonstration purposes because I'm planning on selling it on. There is one of those suppliers of many & various cut to size foams near me, does it HAVE to be acoustic foam, if so do Maplins sell it, if not - who? Thoughts & qualified opinions gratefully received.
I have a friend who, around 20 years ago, got a pick from her guitar hero - Yngwie Malmsteen - and actually had it made into a silver necklace she wore for most of the 90s Rock on! \m/
I've only got two in that category, some off Lemmy & a half dozen from various Steve Cropper gigs. All of which are now in two respective framed photographs of the meets. On the OT, yes - this place is an encyclopaedic pit of information & detail, sometimes the method of giving out such assistance could be better but on the whole it's unique IME, YVMV etc. In that respect I give the OP a to use as they wish.
Save money on fuses & just use a piece of 1/4" bolt. No fuses to blow! Maybe I should pop that in the top tips section?
Years ago I was in a mates house who had done just that with his electric fire. We could smell burning & by the time we found what it was the cover of the plug was a white melted drool pouring down the wall. Much of the plug was glowing but it was still working.

The most annoying drummer in the world?
Big_Stu replied to seymourfluid's topic in General Discussion
In the interests of balance & fairness should this thread not also have a pic of an Oriental transvestite slap bassist? -
FWIW, I had some Fane 15"s that were dual-concentric. They were spec'd as PA speakers, maybe it adds or focuses range?

On No! Not Another "I've Quit the Band" Thread
Heavier leads are more robust, they sometimes live a hard life with a gigging amp, so you need to take more care it doesnt get damaged. its not going to affect your sound. Cant remember the details, but theres some regulation about the length of mains cable supplied with electrical equipment not being more than 1.5 Metres as its a trip hazard.
For my Bulgin leads I bought a heavy duty rubber coated extension reel & cut it up. It's heavy enough to lie flat & has really thick rubber that protects it a lot.
So, bass been in with Ritchie Tomson, Wigan for a week. He is a maestro. Got the call to pick it up this morning. Goes in and I'm sure I heard mutterances about baboon fisted amateur bass players . One dual action truss rod tweek, one set up, a bit of hanging off the wall to let the graphite rods re-adjust, and one bit of fret dressing later, PERFECTA CHEESE . Asked the scary question, how much???? He calmly answered that as I almost single handedly keep him employed, £35. Cheers Ritchie, baboon man will undoubtedly see you soon. Karl. THANKS for all the sage advice chaps, I'm such a talentless wuss.
Fantastic result - I hope you've put him in the recommended Luthiers section. Had to look again, I thought you'd said "a bit of banging off the wall"

Ex "name" amps don't attract same inflated prices as ex "name" guitars?
My Acoustic 370 Amp is stencilled up with Steps, does that make it more valuable?
No, it just means some health & safety guy had it lined up to be used instead of a pair of step-ladders. Also had it confirmed by speaker codes that my cab is a Hiwatt 4122 (guitar OR bass) not a 4123 (guitar only) that it was sold as ............... which was nice! -
The big labels, Universal, Sony etc. get around such costs by mass printing different artists output on one sheet. Typically 16 or even 32 inlays or 10 booklets to one sheet. Once they're stripped down the unit cost is comparatively small. Cardboard sleeves, while physically cheaper, add another process (an expensive one) when they get forme cut (stamped out) of the card. The longer turnaround time may be that some of it is done abroad, some sites even get it done in China now. Cheapest option, for print + finishing would be a 6pp (no more than 10, depending on the paper) roll-fold (like a swiss roll) into a CD single type thin jewel.

Modifying a squire p bass. Recommended hardware/pick ups
Big_Stu replied to ken_white's topic in Repairs and Technical
A not very expensive - and reversible - mod, is to fit a Fender TBX (cut & boost) pot. Reading up the centre detent is apparently a straight thru naked pickup sound. Some folk don't rate them, say the change is minimal, but I like them, YVMV -
Yeah, excellent, little episodes like that are what lifts you at times like yours. Remember feeling similar under similar circumstances, wobbling home in the early hours after a particularly good gig, it was already coming light, birds singing and got a "God is in his heaven & all is right with the world" type feeling. (I'm not religious, but you know what I mean).

Ex "name" amps don't attract same inflated prices as ex "name" guitars?
Big_Stu replied to Big_Stu's topic in Amps and Cabs
Could it be that, non musician, collectors like instruments to display on walls. An amp wouldn't have the same 'wow' factor to them. e.g. A big black box with knobs on isn't as exciting to them as a Gilmour Strat.
Good point, I've been to a fair few Hard Rock Cafe's and never seen an amp bolted to the wall. ............ or one of Gary Glitter's silver suits. I was seriously considering (still am) selling on my Noddy's Hiwatt, but a few gut shots have shown it needs a cap job, so I ain't risking even firing it up until that's done. -
I don't like fretless, but it looks a bit too far gone to be either cleaned up as fretless or refretted. If it was me, I'd be looking for a fretted Squier neck in For Sale, or see if it could be sanded back & have the slots filled, but I think you'd have to sand so far back you'd lose too much fingerboard, even with the neck shimmed.
Note to Stu, presumably the additional XLR on the back of your Hiwatt is not passing the speaker signal as taking that to any sound desk will melt it. (One reason for using different plug/sockets for different purposes).
Yeah, my bad wording, not the speaker signal. I was told by one of the band & one of the crew that it was to try to reduce the chances of feedback rather than micing up cabs due to the incredible volume of their later gigs. Apparently a bit of chorus was added as it went thru the desk back to the PA.
So, there was some science behind the paving slab my make had in his speaker cab after all...
Maybe the same idea as a washing machine having them to stop them jumping around?

Why valve amps? So you can drool over these when you take the case off

There was a Sound Control in Glasgow, opposite the Jury's Inn on *Jamaica St*????? just next to the bridge. It was my hotel of choice in G'gow for many years if travelling for a gig. It was taken over by another chain when SC went bust, but I don't remember the name of it.
