Our drummer has been gigging for over 40 years, so I reckon he's seen his fair share of arses in that time!!
It's the lot of the drummer I'm afraid, what with being sat at the back an' all.
I'm middle aged, I work six days a week, I'm in constant pain from a back injury & I have carer responsibilities for my parents - by the time I've done all that I don't have the energy or the enthusiasm for doing anything other than having a cup of tea & going to bed. I used to blame my depression for my lack of enthusiasm & drive but I'm honestly starting to believe it's just that I'm not into playing very much anymore - maybe you're the same.
Bloody hell mate, you're knackered - pure & simple. You need a bloody good holiday, which I know is no use to you being just told that. But you have my utmost respect for sticking at it as you are. Don't give yourself a hard time over being too tired to do anything else. -
So who was the retailer that you took it too..... I visit on average 3-4 music retailers per day and I don't think I know one that would take in a repair that came from Thomann??
I knew a mountain bike retailer who used to moan like hell about fixing or setting up bikes that the customer had bought elsewhere online. He didn't ever turn them away because he'd charge for it - but he always gave the punter some lip about "it wouldn't have happened if he'd bought locally & he hadn't saved anyway because of the extra work that was needed".

The apathy could just as easily be caused by your meds as your depression. What could ease both is endorphins, a physical feel good factor which can have a knock-on effect. The one usually suggested is rigorous exercise, cycling or swimming being the top two. It would be worth having a word with your GP about it, if you have a good sympathetic one they should be able to advise. -
It's a bit tiresome reading lots of threads suggesting everything has a scientific solution, it doesn't . As humans we enjoy flaws in things, I prefer KT Tunstall's voice live before its been overly cleaned up for example. You can use the techy stuff to prove what is happening and why but not to give a water tight solution or definitive spec for a speaker that everyone will like.
But......but........but.............surely................ you're not saying fanned frets aren't the best thing ever................are you?
Don't like the sound of the 'high tech' cabs you've heard? Love the sound of your 410s? Really need better dispersion*? Try some thing like these: Or just stack two of those smaller ones. Vertically of course. * As if
I'll get me hacksaw out tomorrow!
You would have a greater area covered with two handbags swinging at once!
Yeah, but it's already been established, it's not the area that counts - it's the actual movement of that area.
Is it better than a water pistol at chasing off cats?
What you need is one of these; though speculative theory is that you'd be better off with an over&under one.
I've got a couple of spud guns for hire. Good powerful ones too.
Could you tell me what kind of spuds should be used with them; and have you got a graph of the wave the trajectory makes?
I dont get why they dont work with certain heads? I have more than one head and more than one cab, they are all interchangeable.
Well yeah, that was my question really, though not in a technically matched way, wattage/wattage, ohms/ohms etc. Obviously some cabs work better sound-wise with some amps - not necessarily of the same manufacturer. But Alex is aware of the gig requirements that were spec'd (assuming he can remember what it was) so I would be interested to hear what SVT3>cab recommendations there may be. Just curious, it won't kill me if there wasn't one.
The history was that back in 2009 we had two Barefaced Compacts which went out for Basschatters to try. Lots of people used them and reported back. Gareth was the first link in the chain with one of those cabs and I asked what amp he had and said that it should be fine for his band and the gig he had coming up. He then used someone else's amp for the gig and that amp was the SVT3 which I knew wouldn't have been suitable. And since then he's posted a few dozen times on talkbass and basschat about the deficiency of the Compact when he gigged it. So no, he's never been a customer, he's one of the many basschatters that tried a Compact during the 'Barefaced on tour' thread. Apart from the initial pm or email exchange about what address to send it to, what's your amp and what's your band sound like exchange, everything since then has been open on the basschat or talkbass forum.
Clever idea & it took faith & balls to do it, kudos for that, & strangely it's an idea I was musing over doing for a project I've got underway. I haven't seen any previous exchanges in other threads. Out of curiosity what cab would you have suggested for the SVT? As I said, no slur intended, I was looking to understand the exchange.
I would love to see this discussion put in to action. I mean, maybe we should arrange a bass day type meeting with a set of cabinets of different configurations in a room with say a couple of amps and some source material - say, recordings of a Bass guitar that can be repeated for each test. THEN have some techie guinea pigs up front to describe and demonstrate these 'issues' accurately. We'd all be able to have a clear understanding of what these polar problems and phasing problems sound like. Right?
Will slide-rules & measuring tapes be provided alongside the gaffer tape and sticky buns?
For the record, we ran an offer last December which was a pre-Xmas offer and it was clearly stated as such. Gareth emailed me in February and again in May asking if we could repeat the that offer or do another discount. We don't do discounts or endorsements unless there's a really strong business case (like Flea saying "I want a cab!") because it wouldn't be fair to everyone else, many of whom are working bassists, who are paying full price. Others ask as well. I'm sorry I mentioned it, I'm just getting tired of hearing the same things over and over and over and over again from the same person!
Obviously there's some kind of history and connection between the two of you, & I've read back as far back as I can be arsed to to see where this exchange started. But this is a genuine question and not a dig; do you usually discuss your clients' requirements, what they asked for, where they went wrong etc on a public forum? As I say, genuine, I'm not accusing you of blame, it may not be you that "started it".

halp! Just bought a Hohner B2a from fleabay and think it's broke
chalk this one up to experience!
Wouldn't be so negative yet, you've got a few suggestions, tick them off as they're done. And Hohner may well come up with something that's so damn obvious that no-one else thought of it. Tell them the story, that you think maybe you were robbed on Ebay, so haven't the cash to go buying a new pre-amp & wanted to know what else it could be before you had to bite the bullet. Many years ago, I had a tranny Marshall 100w head. When it started to go iffy I phoned Marshall, sent it to them. They serviced it back to as new condition, replaced all of the knobs as a matter of routine, & IIRC I paid about £35. There are still some good guy companies out there; Hohner could well be one of them. -
By the way Stu, I've tried shimming this thing all sorts of ways in the past (that's how I got it in the shop in the first place!). The problem is in the head end of the neck and I just don't have the skills to repair it.
Fair enough; it almost certainly could be fixed. A luthier I know showed me how to fix (just for interest, I wasn't about to try it) a twisted neck using steam. Your only problem, as you're aware, is the luthier's cost against the value of the bass or a new neck. If your scale length matches and MM do a neck that will fit - with or without a bit of work - then it sounds like the path to go down.

His first cabs, according to Jim Marshall, were 14" deep (IIRC) because that was the size of wood we had lying around that day. I've seen a fair few on many a stage.
I agree entirely. All of a sudden we have 'experts' sniping and pulling people's posts apart just because they have been reading something through wikipedia. It's all well and good to protest you understand these things, but I very much doubt the intricacies matter in real life gigging. Next time I see RHCP or Jamiroquai I'll be sure to tweet them/email them and say 'hey guys you can't use a 4x10 or mix speakers cabs...the world might implode'. It doesn't matter, and more importantly the FOH will change your tone anyway no doubt.
Excellent post! There are so many other variables in a live situation as to make such discussion ******* retentive at best. Depending on what level you're playing at the bass will also be affected by whether the venue is a "barn", the shape of it (how many pubs have the band using an L shaped room?) and often incredibly important how many punters are in. At the top levels I stopped going to gigs at either Glasgow's SECC or Manchester's MEN arena because the sound was unbelievable crap, the only thing going for the gig was to say "I was there" (Though I didn't even want to admit that when one of them was East 17). I was at a gig last year which was in a tall long venue, there was no talk of speaker size, cab shape etc or whether the bassist should switch his Ampeg for his Marshall. First question asked was "How many tickets are sold?" & then jokingly "Try to get the tallest ones to stand at the front, too bad the small guys can't see at the back". There's a lot to be said - stating the obvious - that you're better to start by getting the best sound that you can, but letting theory dictate it completely is missing the mark completely.
The trouble here is that these sites crave massive amounts of publicity, usually using a 'pyramid selling' type approach based on social media - i.e. relying on participants to plug the site amongst their own friends and followers. This publicity is crucial to the website's success - in fact it's pretty much the only bargaining chip they have with advertisers, the press and so on.
I'd reckon they're working on the RATM viral campaign precedent to get them to Xmas No 1. I haven't checked the link so I'm going off what's said here. As a one-off it's a possibility if all of the bands involved, their aunties, grannies & pets all ganged up & supported the winner. But none of those involved will have the business savvy Cowell has, or the back-up to tackle Syco's. It also involves people who can play something, whereas as we've all seen any tone-deaf freak is encouraged into the doors of Cowell's various "auditions" so it has the support of the masses with stardust in their eyes, something any average band will never achieve.
Discussion thread linked to the blog post here: http://blog.basschat...sits-rotosound/ Enjoy and please comment - next up, Warwick HQ! ped
Excellent! For a life long Roto user it was still very informative. Are you going to try for a Marshall visit? They have an excellent museum in their huge reception & their "in-house" theatre has a model of almost every amp they've ever built for trying out. All very friendly folks there too, even when I told them my "big amp" is a Hiwatt.
